Service Pack 2 and the death of Pop-up Ads

Windows Service Pack 2 arrived, and with it came the pop-up blocker from IE (all the other browsers, which are used by a total of 26 people, already had them), which basically means that all popups are innefective. I just wanted to share this in case it was going unnoticed.

Really, I've noticed it. It is a great blocker. I got the feeling some people didn't notice it either since no one had posted about it (you're the first )... BUT IE still has some crash problems.

Popup blocker (The Panicware program with the original name) hasn't been running since SP2 installed...

If you want to turn it on, open IE, go to Internet options, security, and then custom level. You should be able to enable the pop-up blocker from there (although it should be on by default).

the google tollbar has a very nice pop-up blocker 100% free, tells you how many pop-ups it's blocked (2634 so far for me), can say what site you want pop-ups, can google search from anywhere, scan the page fpr any word or phrase, and so much more! [/brainwashed advertisment] i don't see why people pay for pop-up blocking software when they can easily get it free.

Popup ads are nearly obsolete nowadays, even without SP2. Toolbars with popup blocking are everywhere.

Most sites would need to come up with new types of ads to replace the ad revenues lost from popup ads...

Anyway, yeah, Sabo's statement pretty much sums up my position as well. The new IE doesn't have tabbed browsing.

There was a survey some time ago that gave a percentage of how many people actually paid attention to pop-ups. I believe it was between 60-80%...

The problem with that figure is that some people may vote no because they think the aren't being influenced but they are in a small way whilst others might vote yes to inflate the figure so that people keep on spending money on adverts to fund their favourite sites.

Yeah I think that's got to be skewed, the first thing I look for when I get a pop up is the little X in the top right corner..

That's really awesome; now I can throw away "Popup Stopper Companion" with the IE popup blocker.
