SESN01 - The Poor Warmongering Fools

It's been 24 hrs since grs did his original post, and no word from Cuivienen. I can play tonight, so I'll say "got it".

SHE has been conspicuouly absent in a couple of threads I'm in with her lately.

Cuivivenen, if you are reading this, please check in so we know you're still alive.

<delurk>

Cuivenen just posted her turns in Sling3, so maybe she just hasn't gotten to it?

The save

Pre-turn assessment- We’re early into the GA. Science is not at minimum, it’s off with research set to gunpowder. We should find our most corrupt city and get a scientist to at least put us on a research track. We are at war with Theodora, where she remains holed up on her prison island. There can’t be more than a couple spears in her last city, so I will send a galley off with 1 berserk and an archer to finish the job. We still have a treaty in place with Cleo that has been discussed. Now, how do we beat Egypt? I really am not sure myself at this point in time. The focus will be on setting the table for us to do as much damage as possible, and will at least try and put what I can in position for the next player. Our overall build strategy is not supporting the force structure that needs to be in place in order for us to have any chance at making headway vs Cleo. We are building temples and marketplaces in some places, so I will rush buy as appropriate to get us on a war footing, and get more troops in place. It will require burning through a lot of our cash, but time is against us. Cities will build appropriate units to make the most use of our shield capacity, and I will try to increase production levels as well. Cleo will be throwing ancient cavalry, Medieval Infantry and knights against us, so besides numerical superiority, she also has better units in general. What we have to do IMO is fight battles in such a way that we expect to lose cheap units, and in turn kill their expensive ones. The SOD will have ample trebs and spears, with zerks in the local counterattack role.

Copenhagen switches berserk>Knights Templar in 12. Stockholm marketplace>courthouse in 5, hurry production for 224g. Alesund temple>harbor, waste 5 shields. Heraclea is at 25% productivity, they draw the scientist, gunpowder in 50. Rush galley in Arnhem for 88g. Rush spear in Adrianople for 48g. Rush spear in Trbizond for 56g.
Berserk advances north to check out terrain on Egyptian border, spotting SOD of 3AC, 2 archers, 2 MI, 2 spears, 4 swords, all regular, all fortified. Adjacent stack w/3 swords and a spear.

IBT, Constantinople riots, give them entertainer. Egyptian AC on the loose vic Constantinople. Not sure of intent. Adrianople spear>spear. Groningen temple>spear. Stockholm courthouse>treb. Trebizond spear>warrior. Arnhem galley>galley. Aarhus galley>rax. Alesund harbor>galley.

Turn 1- Molde temple>settler, rush for 44g. Hurry market in Amsterdam for 244g. Worker activity.

IBT-Resistance ends in Constant. Egypt AC in the area disappears, have to keep an eye on him. Amsterdam market>rax. Trondheim aqueduct>galley. Hague harbor>worker, Reykjavik treb>treb. Molde settler>spear.

Turn 2- Stavanger hurry market for 148g. More worker stuff.

IBT- Groningen spear>spear. Eindhoven galley>rax. Oslo zerk>zerk. Stock treb>treb
Birka spear>rax. Stavanger market>treb. Odense temple>rax.

Turn 3- Hareid hurry market for 268g. Send zerk into area vic Avaris for a peek, know we’ll get booted.

IBT- Cleo calls on us to leave. No problemo. Hareid market>zerk.

Turn 4. Our zerk gets lost, and keeps going north deeper into Egypt. Lisht sighted, size 9.

IBT- GL gives us gunpowder from Incas and Egypt. Chemistry in 50. Trondheim galley>spear. Bergen berserk>treb. Groningen spear>spear. Aarhus rax>spear.

Turn 5 Send 2 galleys into sea tile for shortest route to Byz capital. Hurry galley in Alesund for 72g. Heraclea galley>spear. Don’t trust that AC Egypt has floating.

IBT- Amsterdam rax>spear. Eindhoven rax>spear. Stockholm treb>treb. Birka rax>zerk. Trebezond warrior>spear. Stavanger treb>treb. Alesund galley>treb.

Turn 6- Galley moves to Sardica, zerk attacks reg Byz spear. No damage to us, Sardica autorazes, we get 70g. I beg to report that the weak Byzantines have been destroyed. We carry on. Worker actions, keep moving into Egypt til we’re kicked. Assembling the fleet at Alesund.

IBT- Egypt finally throws us out. Reykjavik treb>treb. Oslo zerk>zerk.

Turn 7- Worker actions. Alesund has 3 loaded galleys waiting to move in. Rush zerk in Birka for 252g. Ouch, but don’t want that chariot @ Buto any chance to survive.

IBT Trondheim spear>spear, same for Eindhoven, Heraclea. Birka zerk>spear. Odense rax>spear.

Turn 8- More worker actions. End the wines for dyes deal. Next turn start the Egypt dies deal. Rush spear in Molde for 48g. Rush treb in Alesund for 96g. Military advisor says we’re average to Egypt.

Turn 9- Messed up BIG time, didn’t compensate for loss of the wine, Copenhagen & Oslo riot. If this costs us KT, I’ll have to fall on my battleaxe. Call Cleo, we are now at DEFCON 1. Our navy is not starting well, we lose 2 vet galleys off what was Sardica. Redline reg Egypt galley. Vet zerk kills reg spear in Buto, promotes. Second reg spear shows, killed by next vet zerk. Buto falls. Vet zerk kills reg chariot vic Buto, only lone worker remains. At Avaris, Vet zerk gets shot at by reg archer, no effect, kills reg spear. Second zerk kills reg spear, archer showing. Next galley up, zerk kills archer, Avaris is ours. 2 spears reinforce off galleys. Workers up will complete road over mountains to perform link-up w/Avaris in 2. Vet zerk kills that elite lurking AC, loses hp, promotes.
Hit enter and hope Avaris can hold.

IBT- Egypt’s SOD is heading to Constantinople, so now it’s a game of chicken to see who turns away first. Eindhoven spear>spear. Stockholm treb>treb.

Turn 10- Archer & spear unload by Chalcedon. At Hieraconopolis, zerk kills reg spear. And then a second time, and the city goes. We can’t hold it, bring the torches. 3 prisoners are loaded onto the galleys. Hurry spear in Constantinople for 39g. Change Alesund to settler, rush for 108g. At peace, may be able to slip him into area vic Hieraconopolis at peace. Hurry spear at Odense for 48g, at Aarhus for 56g, at Adrianople for 44g, at Heraclea for 64g, at Trebizond for 48g, Molde for 72g. Advance the zerk army to within 2 of Lisht, vet musket showing. Rush harbor at Smyrna for 48g. Change Stavanger to zerk, rush for 232g. Treb strikes redline 2 swords and a spear.

To conclude, here are a couple options. Our zerk fleet can threaten Abydos with the same treatment as Hieraconopolis. Next city up north is Thebes itself, which isn’t on the coast, but is more heavily defended. The zerk army threatens Lisht. If that goes, her SOD is more isolated. Don’t know if she’ll turn back, Constantinople is obviously a high value target itself, but that’s why I was pumping out a lot of cheap spears, to delay as best we can. The archer army is still by there for defense, although she’s packing serious firepower. There are about 10 of our trebs waiting for the land bridge to complete at Avaris next turn, so they will be available to do serious damage themselves. Just matters what we can stomach, likely all her cities we threaten are good-sized, while outside of Constantinople, ours are 2’s and 3’s. The cities we captured/razed yielded no gold, so she’s cash-short. Didn’t bring in the Zulu, since not sure what assets Shaka has. Next one up can make that call.

Look like good turns M60. That SOD will be quite interesting. Hopefully we have enough units there to hold, though those AC's are always a real pain.

I won't be able to play tonight anyhow, so if Cuivienen sees this in the next 18 hours or so, she can pick it up. Otherwise I'll play tomorrow night.

Well, no word from CVN, so I GOT IT.

FWIW, I just subscribe to all my SG threads and check my usercp often ....

Bring the hammer down!!

OK, quite a lot of units running around. The Egyptian SOD contains 3 AC, 3 MI, 2 archer, 6 sword, and 2 spear. At least they’re all regulars. We have about a dozen trebs and a bunch of spears in the area.

MM looks good KT in2.

Hit enter.

IT – Vet spear in Molde holds (-1). We lose vet zerk to reg MI (-2). First SOD continues towards constan. Second (mini)SOD appears near Avaris, 7 AC, will divert zerk army. Trondheim spear -> zerk. Adrianople spear -> spear. Groningen spear -> zerk. Smyrna harbor -> worker. Heraclea spear -> spear. Birka spear -> zerk. Trebizond spear -> zerk. Aarhus spear -> spear. Stavanger zerk -> barracks. Odense spear -> spear. Hareid zerk -> zerk. Molde spear -> treb. Alesund settler -> treb. And that’s it.

760 ad (1) – Road to avaris completed. Zerk army wins flawless vs AC. Redeploying troops.

IT – Two battles. First , we held Avaris, but lost 3 spears and 1 vet zerc. Then 3 vet spears on a mtn kill two of the AC from the main stack. The Hague worker -> barracks. Copen KT :band: -> Zerk. Reyk treb -> spear. Eind spear -> zerk. Oslo zerk -> zerk. Stockholm spear -> treb. Egypt completes Sun Tzus, how lovely for us. :D

770 ad (2) – All of the AC near Avaris are slaughtered with trebs and zerks. Rush a zerk here, a temple there. Waiting for the stack …

IT – Cleo’s ready to talk. We get Theology from GL. Amsterdam spear -> zerk. Bergen zerk -> zerk. Stavanger barracks -> spear.

730 ad (3) – reg spear kills redlined AC and promotes. (-2) I go after Abydos. Vet zerk loses vs reg musket, no damage. Elite zerk loses 1 vs reg musket. Vet zerk kills vet spear (-2). Vet zerk wins vs reg spear (-1) and promotes. Vet zerk wins and promotes vs reg rl MI. Abydos falls.

IT – We lose three spears in various attacks. Stockholm treb -> market.

Elite Zerk poaches a settler pair. Archer army kills vet spear. Elite archer dies vs reg archer. Elite archer takes revenge. Elite zerk wins vs reg sword. Reg zerk dies vs reg spear. Army kills rl spear.

IT – Our GA ends. We lose the elite* zerk. Constan zerk -> zerk. Copen zerk -> zerk. Trebizond zerk -> zerk. Arnhem galley -> aque. Aarhus spear -> aque. Stavanger spear -> spear. We get Pentagon message.

800 ad (5) – Bodo founded. Trebs redline all three units in Lisht. Elite zerk kills rl musket and Sesn’s Zerks are reformed. Zerk army takes four damage killing rl musket. Army kills rl pike and Lisht falls. Vet zerk kills reg spear. Elite zerk kills longbow.

810 ad (6) – two elite zerks take out two vet longbows. One forms another regiment of Sesn’s zerks.

820 ad (7) – Not much, trying to fill armies and regroup troops. Kill AC/settler pair. That stupid stack keeps going back and forth. We produce our first crusader.

IT – Abydos falls, but we have two armies just outside it. Zerk -> zerk. Smyrna settler -> worker. Aarhus aque -> spear. Stavanger spear -> zerk. Odense spear -> spear. Stack turns towards Molde.

830 ad (8) – Zerk army kills knight and AC defending Abydos. Zerk army defeats longbow to reclaim Abydos, though I consider the torch. Zerk army defeats Vet spear on a hill near Molde. Mendes (on the little island) is autorazed.

IT – Vet spear in Molde wins vs reg sword. Stack turns back towards Constan for my settler bait. (I didn’t want them to be on the mountains.) Bergen zerk -> zerk.

840 ad (9) – Elite zerk rl, but wins vs vet knight. Elite zerk wins vs reg pike. Reg zerk flawless and promotes vs reg sword.

IT – Groningen zerk -> zerk. Lisht settler -> worker. Thebes finishes Leos, thanks again, Cleo. :D

850 ad (10) – Zerk army kills vet knight and vet AC.

Recap: I had good luck with leaders, but that also slowed progress as I used many of the free units to fill the armies. The next target should be Thebes, both for the wonders (or wonder deprivation), and to take out the horses, as the knights are starting to come regularly. The hill to the west may be the best spot, but we’ll be attacking across a river. There are two zerk armies in Abydos, and a dozen trebs in the galleys just off the coast. I have been trying to lure the SOD to the spot west of Constan, as I don’t want to leave the archer army in the open. There are two zerks in the galley near Constan. So far I have been content to poach any random units that separate from the stack, but now we have a zerk army headed down there to finish them off. There are a lot of spears in both Constan and Molde, as the stack would not commit to one target. We have two units stranded on the island where the last Byz city was, and only now have a galley to send over there (currently near Smyrna). There is a settler in Lisht waiting to resettle the open spot to the west of the city when it’s safe enough to do so. Lisht will be starved down to size two next turn. There is a fairly steady stream of units headed from the core to the front. Overall Cleo seems weak, as the units are coming one and two at a time now.

Not much different, but here's a screenie:

Very nice indeed. I just love that old fashion artillery barrage, it can really level the playing field, and the enemy that's on it!

@Microbe - Didn't even think of the PP gambit. I was agonizing way too much about Cleo. If we miss it by a few turns, I'll feel like quite the ass. :rolleye:

Also, if you want to grab it now, I seriously doubt CVN will want to play her ten on a school night. If not, someone will grab it tomorrow.

@M60 - You know arty are always the great equalizer, but I hate how inefficient they are. I guess if they hit all the time, then maybe even I could beat Sid.

This is kind of like a mini-France '40. The EEF is trapped and their capital in dire peril. Sweet.

You know if the damn EEF had committed to one target then there wouldn't BE an EEF anymore, but maybe they knew that ....

And I was about to post "Got it." Oh well. I'd be waiting until tomorrow to play, anywa, so it makes little difference.
