SESN01 - The Poor Warmongering Fools

Strategy_against_Egypt.jpg

Solid plan.

The best tactic with the zerk is hit and run. The best scenario involves 'zerks and defenders in the same boats or as deployed above. If you have to expose a 'zerk make sure it is covered by at least one defensive unit and another 'zerk for the defend bombard.

Trying to use them for anything but amphib operations is slow suicide.

Preturn: we are looking much better.

I create embassy with Egypt:

Thebes is size 9, 4 lux, 15spt, 7 garrison, and building colosseum. It has iron/horses. Egypt is still at war with Byzantines? She only knows Zulu and Byzantines. Seems only we have the contact between continents.

I raise lux to 20 and fire clowns. Switch Copenhagan to market. Some cities to worker. Switch Oslo to settler. Rush temple in Hague to get furs.

Invention is important to us but can we take Great Library? Our military is too thin, so we probably need zerks to do that anyway. I continue on this path.

(1)370AD: ZZZ
(2)380AD: dyes online, lux to 10.

IBT Inca demands 38g. I cave.

(3)390AD: ZZZ

(4)400AD:

(5)410AD: ZZZ

(6)420AD: Byzantines/Egypt sign peace. Byzantine starts Sun Tzu's.

(7)430AD: Egypt/Byzantines have Monotheism. Apparently they traded.

(8)440AD: I declare on Byzantines. Capture 2 workers. Lux to 0 and I raise sci to get Invention in 4. Elite archer kills archer and gets us another leader. I'll save it for zerks.

SESN1-440AD.jpg

(9)450AD:

5 archers attack Trebizond. Lose one archer and we take it.
archer army takes Heraclea too. We now havr 2 sources of furs.

Just found we have a galley fortified somewhere! Wake it up immediately.

(10)460AD: We found Alesund. Lower sci to 70 and Invention in 2.

With zerks in a few turns we can load the army and take out Constantinople, which has the Great Library. So shut off research after Invention. We could start min research on Gunpowder only if nobody has it, otherwise just do no research at all.

If Theology comes, let's start min research on Printing Press.

Pay very close attention to happiness. Note we can have up to 4 MP per city, but we are not fully using it yet. Build some warriors?

The two galleys need to do a suicide run to the other continent. We still have one guy unmet yet.

Note, our GA will probably come soon. Use it to push our infra - especially markets. Libraries can wait as we won't do self-research too soon yet. And of course build zerks and prepare a force toward Egypt.

Also, we may want to start prebuild for Knights Templar..

Got it. Play today.

Build 'zerks, boats, trebs, spears, prepare for Knights Templar...

Capture Great Library!!

Did I forget anything?

Do we really want the GL yet? Byzantine isn't going anywhere, and after invention, there's no really beneficial techs coming right away ....

460

The Byzantines have dromons out so taking Constan by sea is going to be almost impossible. I move the archer army out of Heraclea to avoid injury by the approaching Bys dromon and the Byzantine shoot flame at Groningen instead but to no effect

Will try to concentrate archers to move into mountains between Trebizond and Smyrna. Byzantines co-operate and lose an archer against the troop fortified in Trebizond.

The Egyptians have lots of troops slouching towards Byzantium. I wonder what terrible beauty is about to be born? They turn around and head back home.

The archer army needs healing before marching on the Byzantines.

T1 470
Manuvering and shifting citizens around to max gold and reduce discontent.

Byzantines lose another archer in the mountains so the path is now open to Constantinople.

Dromon fires at Gronningen again and injures warrior.

We learn Invention!!

T2 480

Research off

Byzantine dromon bombards Heraclea and wounds spear

T3 490
Army start march towards Smyrna.
Lose an elite archer leader fishing against regular Byzantine archer in mountains. Byzantine archer is unscathed.
Byzantines will talk peace but aren't willing to offer anything. They bombard Heraclea again and cripple spear.

T4 500
Position army to attack Smyrna.
Move archers into mountains east of Trebizond towards Constantinople.

Egyptians start Knights Templar in Elephantine which is not on our maps yet.

T5 510
Archers and army are in position to attack Smyrna.

Copenhagen gets away from me and riots

T6 520
Battle for Smyrna
Vet archer attacks, kills spear, wins promotion. Vet archer attacks and fails against spear. Elite archer attacks spear, wins but fails promotion. Army attacks and kills spear, then attacks again, and the city is ours and another six slaves.

Byzantines will give Monotheism and their treasury for peace, but I press onward to Constantinople

T7 530
Invasion force kills Byzantine archer in mountains west of Constan and takes the high ground

Army moves out of Smyrna toward Adrianople

Buy wine from Cleopatra for Dyes and 5gpt as we are still at least 20 turns from an Egyptian War and the added contentment lets me shift garrisons around,

T8 540
Maneuvering

T9 550
More maneuvering. Upgrading archers to zerks as cash comes available and dispatching to Trondheim.

T10 560AD
Archer army resumes the march on Adrianople

Not much else to report.

Inca now have Gunpowder and Monotheism
Byzantines have founded a little ville offshore
The approach to Egypt is not going to be very easy as their borders have now expanded and there is no easy way across the mountains that I can see. The Byzantines are making a half-hearted counter invasion with a single archer and a couple of spears in the neighborhood of Trebizond and a single archer has sortied out of Adrianople trying to distract our forces. There are also two dromons heading inbound at Smyrna. The garrison of a spear and two healing archers has been moved out of Smyrna to avoid damage from the dromons. If they land troops and try to retake the city it can be dealt with by the army or the archers in the jungle. The Army is still awaiting orders as filling it with 'zerks means no boat trips. We could fill it with spears and use it on the march into Egypt to cover the trebs.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, but nothing has really changed in the landscape

Nice turns! We can fill zerks in army and use it only on the ground. Filling spear is a waste as they have the same defense.

This army can be used to pillage in Egypt too.

I don't know how to attack Egypt either. Maybe fortify on the mountain and let them attack.

@Sesn,
I'll be out of town until next Wednesday with no game and no net access. Please skip me if need be.

Death to Theodora!!

Seriously, I'd like to pose a question before grs picks it up. Would we rather wait on the GL? The next tech that can help us is Astronomy, and after that, Nationalism. If we take the library now, we're only going to net two or three techs from it. Not much of a big benefit if you ask me. We're going to be using the same units for a while, whether we take it or not. I'd just like to hear some thoughts on it.

As the last barracks archer has been upgraded it may make sense to turn on the bunsen burners and pick up the enabling techs toward Metalurgy. I wouldn't be in a hurry to trade for them though unless we want to fuel the other continent into the IA and play serious catch up.

Monarch AIs are slow. I'd rather we do self-research after Education and get into rifles asap ourselves. Waiting on AI would mean no tech lead. With zerks and rifles (and infantry) we can do much better.

We need to focus on infra soon. That's why I like Republic. Don't know how fast Monarchy can research.

That said I don't mind a totally different way of playing.

I forgot to attach it.

@Microbe - Nope, self research is fine, as long as that's the more beneficial way to go. I just misunderstood our plans it would seem.

BTW - you remember that there won't be any infantry, right?

It makes economic sense to run an oscillating research budget, so long as you think you stand a good chance of getting to a technology either first or second. In other words, 0 research until you can build a hefty surplus, then maximum regardless of the burn rate. Then use the new tech to pull both cash and tech from the AI. When you get hurt is when you try to take a middle ground, the break-even approach and set the research to some amount between 0 and maximum affordable.

You can use scientists in corrupt towns to run miminmum research at no harm to the budget if you want to invest something in a tech to reduce its buy price.

I haven't worked out the math but observation has convinced me that the "learning curve" is not linear. It is flat at the beginning of the slider then accelerates upward above 50%. Put simply beakers don't accumulate at the same rate for all positions on the slider. You can see this by calculating the gold to beaker conversion rate from the data in the F1 screen.
