Setting install path for 319 patch

Hello all. I have Civ 4 installed on an external harddrive ( f: ) and it is the box edition of Civ Complete currently at version 317. I downloaded the 319 patch and tried to install it, but received an error that said something to the effect of "catastrophic failure".

The patch never gave me the option to chose the install path, so I am assuming that it defaults to c: and this obviously won't work as Civ isn't installed there.

So my question is do any of you fine Ladies and Gents know of a way to set the install path for the 319 patch? For example, how do I open up the .exe file to view the contents and find the batch script (or whatever it's called) and change the directory?

PS I did try placing the patch in the same folder as civ and that didn't work either. I will give the ingame install a go, but I have yet to have that work successfully.

Thank you.:)

Ingame install won't work. It tries to use a Firaxis website that no longer exists. I don't know about an external drive. I installed mine, also Complete from disc, in a directory that I created, not the default one but it was still on the C drive. 3.19 patcher worked with that. One of the resident experts should be along soon.

The patch detects where Civ is installed so as long as it is installed correctly the patch will find Civ and install it in the right place. You need to download the patch outside of the game, ingame install doesn't work. With a catastrophic failure a re-download would be best. Install using right-click and run as administrator if you're using Vista or above.

Some versions of Complete have an issue where the registry data "non-standard" as far as the 3.19 patch is concerned so it can't figure out what to do. Try installing the 3.17 patch first (even though it claims to already be at 3.17) since that can fix the registry entries, if this is the problem you are having.
