My first question is, what ratio do you have for working on land settlers and city-making settlers?

Then I made a sweet crusader/chariot combo. May not sound like much, but in the beginning go straight for monotheism, you get the wheel along the way this allows you to have the chariot and crusader (not catapalt, crusader. ands not phaanx, chariot, you'll see why). And usually I only have my cities support 4 units, a working settler, a city-making settler, a phalanx for defense at the time, and a offensive unit, half of cities would make a chariot and half crusader.

I would create crusader/chariot pairs. Now the chariot's 2 defense covers for the crusader, and it can MOVE F-A-S-T (for ancient times) to go along with the crusader. Now not only will the crusader 5 attack power (high for the time since you went straight for monotheism) be useful but same with the chariot! The main factor is that this combo can do FAST conquer for such anceint times.

I captured about 3 egyptian cities in 5 turns with only 3 pairs of this miracle combo

Well, the Chariot only defends with one, not two :).

But Monothiesm is a good goal, and the Cursader is a powerful attack unit, esp. if it is Veteran. Mononothiesm is also a good goal for Michelangleo's Chapel, the most important wonder in most high-difficulty games.

With lots of Crusaders, you can still overwhelm the AI if you concentrate them in a coordinated way in one location.

Diplomats can being an empire down quickly, esp. if you take the enemy capitalwith your vet crusaders! ;)

?I thought on my game they had a 2 defense? Ohhhh darn it.....They did wonders on my game too oh well...

I just noticed that I never gave an answer to your first question! i don't have a specific ratio... it depends on the game situation and food/shield surpluses. Typically, the first city make one or two settlers, and then concentrates on Wonders and improvements. The 2nd or 3rd city sometimes skips a settler to get it up to speed for wonders. The other cities all spawn lots of settlers, and provide support units. :)

Each of my cities supports 1 working settler. They'll support more if I have the pyramids, massive food income, and haven't researched sanitation yet. Then when a city gets supermarkets I'll up the suport to 3 or 4 each.

I generally have 1 Settler per city, but many have no settlers, or two... When I want a settler to build a city, I rename the city with suffix BC, example Kyoto BC, or Bc suffix when in early planning stage. When that settler unit is active, I get the message BC to build a city. The BC suffix also appears on reports.

Similarly, I add the St suffix to put a Settler in the "Q" to build, such as "Kyoto St". I use the W suffix to mean Worker, I don't need to move that Settler to the frontier, "Matsuyama W Aq" (Aq means an Aquaduct in the Q).

Interesting, GN. It's really dependant on food income, terrain, military situation, etc. As for Crusaders, they're best when supported by Knights, IMHO.

Most of my settlers are focused on terrain improvements. I'll build a few cities and grow them, irrage and road and watch the cities fatten up. After contact with other civs, my expansion is mostly conquest, that is why I can never seem to stop conquering, I don't like to build and maintain my own cities, so I steal everyone else's. Considering that the AI can improve terrain fater than I can, it's a pretty good deal, especially on those perfectionist civs.

Good deal for who exactly?

I still don't understand the chariot thing. They only defend with one and you don't get the wheel on the way to getting Monotheism anyway. I always leave the wheel for ages until I need invention. I always leave Warrior Code and Iron Working too, until I need Gunpowder, then come back for Feudalism and Theology. I'll either defend with phalanxes or bribed archers until I get musketeers, but having to go back for pikemen to gett he upgrades is a pain. Still, I have to keep gunpowder out of the AI's hands for as long as possible, particularly if I am trying to conquer one. You get elephants on the way to Monotheism, but they've only got a defence of 1 too. Knights are the only troops that this could work with, but they come some time after chariots.
