Several CTD's

So I am playing AND 1.74 H and am having the same problem over and over. Whenever I try to load a previous save while in-game i get a CTD. To be more specific, when I load up AND I can load my games just fine from the main menu, but once I start actually playing, if I try to load a previous save the game crashes, giving me the "bad allocation" popup. I have tried exiting to the main menu and loading from there, same problem.

Also, the game will usually start to crash after a couple hours of play, generally after construction finishes in a city and as soon as I click on a new construction order game crash.

Finally, this is kind of unrelated and may be a foolish question, but is there a way to load AND from my desktop? ie. instead of having to do the following: start Civ4 --> advanced options --> load a mod --> RoM. Can I create a shortcut to just launch the mod?

Thanks

Larger Saves often crash if you try to load them from in an existing game - and it is well documented. The generally accepted theory is that BTS is trying to create a new game from your save, while still holding your current game in memory, which can cause the game to exceed your available RAM, causing a hard crash. There's not much modders can do about it, since the way games load is unmoddable.

Anyway, you can create a shortcut pretty easily. Right click on your desktop, and select "Create Shortcut". Point it to whereever your "Beyond the Sword.exe" is. (In my case, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Civ4BeyondSword.exe"). Name it. Then once the shortcut appears, right click on it and select "Properties" at the very bottom. Once the properties page appears, look in the shortcut tab for the "Target" text field. Append this at the end: mod="Rise of Mankind". Save the changes, and the shortcut should load the mod by default now.

Sadly that didn't help my CTD with 1.74H. I'm guessing that version is no longer supported?

It still is.

1.75 is still in beta, so 1.74H is still being supported :). Just need to be clear about bug(s) with clear upload of savegame/screenshot(s)/log(s)/installation log :).

Alright, thanks for the help. However, now I cannot load any of my save games. Is it because they are too large (all about 1MB in size) and my RAM can't handle it?

If so, are there any guidelines about RAM amount and recommended game sizes/lengths? I'm currently running 4GB of RAM. Also, any way to free up more RAM so I can fully enjoy this excellent mod? Sorry for being so persistent.

Maybe something in this discussion that helps:

UPDATE 2 SEPTEMBER 02

Thinking about drjones' remarks in the ROM-thread:

Given that games expand as time goes by the 6gigs I have now might not be enough after a while, or there might also be CPU bottlenecks on some functions.

In my case I used an usb-stick. It has to be FAST (at least USB2) or it will not work: the ReadyBoost-tab will not even appear in the window !
I connected a 4Gb USB2-stick, changed it to ReadyBoost and suddenly everything works fine !!!
It turns out that in Vista the ReadyvBoost can also be used in the way drjones describes above.

There is a led in my usb-stick and I can clearly see the heavy activity as it needs this memory when I play CIV4-RoM-AND on High Grapics at 1680x1050. It even works great in a game fully developed after many turns!
By the way: same thing for other demanding graphics- or video-software

As I said: RoM and AND are very demanding...

:) The The Civ/Vista Survival Guide may also be interesting for you.

The Civ/Vista Survival GuideGuide - Section 2
….
2. Civ only uses one core of a multi core CPU. That being said, a dual core CPU will run Civ better than a mono core because the game runs on the first core, and the OS and system apps run on the second core (Mostly. It isn't that cut and dried, but for simplicity, that will do.)
…..
3. Running Civ and Vista with less than 2 GB of RAM is just asking for slow, choppy performance, turn lag, and leaderhead slowdown. Vista really needs 2 GB to do anything reasonably well, and 3 Gb is better if you only run 32 bit. 4 GB or more is nice for 64 bit.
…………
etc
Civ4 and Vista:

So I tried using the ready boost thing with an 8Gb flash drive I have and still no go. Every time I try to load my last save the game brings up the loading screen and promptly crashes. I have 4Gb of RAM and the ready boost is reserving another 4 on the flash drive. My save file is 950Kb or something very close to that. I honestly have no idea what could be wrong. My system specs should be able to handle the game and mod fine (i think at least).

Bug-Fixes:
  • Fixed CTD's when loading previous saves (That was introduced in Patch H of 1.74)

No - It doesn't fix the bug you're thinking of. That fix was for a CTD I introduced, not an existing one in BTS. ;)

Your system is very much like mine.
You have a better OS than my Vista Professional, both 32bit.
In my case the ModMod still works fine, however I notice that my saves are not as giant as yours (yet).
So I will play on and see when I get stuck ....
For now I have no answer other than the one Afforess gave:

I doubt it. Civilization 4's diplomacy screen, popout videos, and menus have always been laggy. Play BTS unmodded and build a wonder to see for yourself. It's not a mod problem. Also, since the game uses 32bit architecture, the maximum ram it can use is ~3GB of ram. (On 32-bit computers, be sure to enable 3GB of Ram usage). So if you use too big of maps, it can cause memory allocation failures, which I have little control over.

Still there’s a few things in other fields I’m trying out:

1. Extend ReadyBoost : In a few days I get an 8Gb Fast USB.
I will try how much further I can extend the ReadyBoost (to 8Mb?).

2. Overclocking the videocard : The Hyperdrive in the ASUS SmartDoctor software that came with my nVidiaGTS250 seems to help, I have to experiment further on that. After that there is the great Riva-Tuner.

3. Get a 64 bit system: If my 3year old system collapses I will build a new one preferably with a quadcore (best for CIV5 anyway) 8GbRAM and a 64bit system (see the discussion in the thread “Main Download Information” about 32 vs 64 bit), but at this moment I have to spend my money on some other things first..

4. Escapism : I pre-ordered Civ5

Alright thanks, I'll try overclocking my GPU and maybe my RAM. Also, how can you tell if its crashing because of a MAF and if it is can it be fixed?

So after overclocking both my GPU and Ram the problem persists. Every time I start up AND and try to load an old save the game crashes. I decided to start a new game on a standard size map on normal speed and still the same problem despite the save files being 370Kb instead of the 900Kb like my older saves.

I have noticed that it seems like after most of the map has been revealed and I save the game I can no longer load it. However, this could be completely off, It's just that the saves all become unloadable after approximately that point (generally renaissance era or a little later).

Are there documented problems like this? I honestly have no idea what the problem could be. I've started new games with different settings (smaller maps, faster game speeds, barbarians off, etc.), have re-downloaded the mods, reinstalled the mods with different options, anything I could think of.

All in all, it is extremely aggravating to put hours into a playthrough only to have it be for naught. Then decide to try something new only to have the same problem again and again and again. Any help anyone could offer would be incredible. Thanks.

I know of the issue. I even know what the problem is, and how I caused it (and the exact code...). It's fixed in 1.75 Beta's. I simply lack the setup to make any more 1.74 patches, or I would release a new one to fix it.

I recommend most serious players move to beta2. It's very close to a real release, very stable, and a very mature version.

There is a workaround. Load the start of game autosave, then from ingame load the current save.

tried that what nbafan posted above but the error seems to be pretty frequent and it gets kinda...silly...
