SGOTM 04 - Geezers

same...communism first, then we should decide where to research next...Medicine is unimportant to us other than it leads to genetics, which is needed for the SS Life Support(I think?)

After Communism, I really think we should go Physics next so that we gain access to a ton of techs we can't see yet...that'll also give us a better idea of whether to research medicine and trade it for tons of stuff, or to research a smaller tech that we can trade for a couple techs.

Interesting turn set. I was slapped awakened to the reality of conceding so many Cities to Gandhi so fast. He is determined on a Conquest Victory and he might get it if we are not careful. He razed Old Tifilis and tried to get Tifilis. I switched Tifilis to a cannon after 3 turns of dah. We need to hold this line or the other option is to retreat to Celtia and hope we can repel him if he come knocking. He has been decimating our navy, thank goodness he do not have Destroyers.....yet.

I think we need to determine what are our plans. Earlier, I wanted to hold ground at Upps and the other city just to keep our tech pace up and show Gandhi we are strong. Now he is becoming too strong but not getting smarter to go star gazing. He is too far behind to trade techs with the others. I think we may have a problem.

Izzy and others are enjoying the mlitary displays of Destroyers, infantry and cannons. I have gifted Izzy couple of Items but she is still annoyed with us. She can be our biggest threat at the moment.

He has been decimating our navy, thank goodness he do not have Destroyers.....yet.

:hmm: Looks like Ghandhi is a convert to the 'Kick 'em whilst they're down' philosophy. We may have to adopt the Vietnam ploy. :( However I'm disturbed by his razing of Old Sarai (?). That seems to imply that he can't afford any new cities.

:( I can't look at the save until later but I must admit I'm a bit stumped as to what to do next. If we evacuate all our southern cities he may well raze them all. However this may get the war lust out of his system so that he starts teching again. Since we're some distance away he may leave us alone for a while. I wonder if there's any way to get him allied with Izzy? I can't remember if PAs are switched on this game.

Shame the world war's come to an end though. Any signs that the other AI's have designs on us?

Hm, sounds tricky. Will have a look at it tonight. Got it.

Roster update :

Sam
Htadus - just played
Mark - UP
Jenarie - on deck
Harbourboy
Thrallia

The main thing is to make sure that we survive. We should play as if we were looking for a normal domination victory ourselves. Forget the fancy Gandhi space race tactics for an early win.

If we are alive at the end of the game and knock everyone else down to size, then Gandhi will eventually launch a space ship because he will run out of other things to do. The AI always eventually launches after they have Apollo Program.

So we should just wheel out all our normal tactics as if this was a normal game. I doubt whether anyone will be able to get a really early win (loss) in this game as everyone will be encountering the same problems with Gandhi's decision making.

I've had a look at the game but I'm not much wiser as to how we might proceed. Harbourboy's idea of surviving seems a good starting point though.

I noticed a couple of points:
  • Permanent Alliances are not switched on so I can scrap any vague ideas of alliances that I might have had.
  • Izzy is not a vassal anymore so she may get uppity again.

It seems to me that Hanny is probably our biggest danger. Given his strength and the fact that Mehmed looks to have come out on the losing side against him there's not much we can do against him until we get stronger. As a result I favour the military tech route rather than space techs. Either route will take a while in any case. Since Izzy doesn't seem to passing on techs to Ghandhi I'm not sure there's any benefit in giving her any more techs anyway.

I agree. Let's forget about giving anyone any techs and just build up our strength, with a view to being able to thwart anybody else's attempts to get into space.

I note that our graphs seem to have the biggest drop offs of any of the other teams. I wonder if anyone will succeed in meeting the game objectives. Maybe it's a trick game and nobody can win (lose) it.

Izzy is my biggest concern because she have it in for us since we are at war with her buddy The other thing is that I do not think any body is going to give any techs to Gandhi untill he is seriously behind. So if the situation come up, I think we should take Izzy out of the game.

BTW Harbourboy, anyone can end up loosing ....say to AI by conquest.:)

Had a look at the save. We can get 12gpt out of trades with Washington and Hannibal. And we can get dyes from Mehmed, so we can up science. Washington does not have communism, yet, so maybe we can get something from him for communism which we can get in 6 instead of 8.

I plan to play later in the evening.

well, I agree that since gifting Izzy techs isn't helping Gandhi...so we should stop for awhile, until we see if Izzy is distributing techs to Gandhi yet or not.

I also think we'll need to take down both Mehmed and Hannibal to make sure no one except Gandhi CAN launch...then hope he does. So we may want to tech our way to Infantry and Artillery, then turn off research, upgrade our stuff, and smash Hannibal...while using Mehmed as a barrier ;)

Infantry has a prerequisite of Steam Power IIRC so we would be better starting that after Communism instead of Physics.

OH, YES. I hope to get SP for communism from Washington. I cannot play tonight as I am not in the condition to do so. (Father's Day in Germany). I will play tomorrow. Cheers.

I hope to get SP for communism from Washington.

Remember it may be worth investing a turn or so in SP to degrade it's value to the AI before trying to trade for it. You probably know this anyway but no harm in mentioning it. :)

I may just have to join you to celebrate. :hmm: Come to think of it, I wonder how many countries have father's day on different dates? Might be an excuse for a beer every night.

Sorry I've been quiet. I have been reading along, just haven't had much to offer. I'll look at the save this weekend after markh's turnset.

 Darn, just missed it in South Korea... looks like Lithuania is next. Wonder if I can talk my daughters into a gift?
