SGOTM 05 - Geezers

I don't have Warlords, sorry. Can I run it on BTS? (Silly question perhaps).

You might be able to open it in BTS but if so I'm pretty certain BTS will convert it to BTS in which case the rest of us can't open it in warlords. :(

It's looking fairly likely that the next SGOTM will be using warlords, although not completely decided, judging by the discussion in the results thread. If so, then you would be unable to participate as an active team member without warlords :( although you could still be a lurker. ;)

BtS has many of the Warlords features, but is unable to run Warlords save files.

Good luck next game guys, I wish you all the best despite being in competition with you now :) Hopefully both our teams can take laurels next time :D

Thanks for the good wishes and the same to your team. Just make sure to be a couple of turns behind our finish date. :p

Now I have to monitor TWO Geezers threads. Such an increased administration burden in my life...........

And that SG forum moves pretty quickly (much faster than SGOTM - I never knew there was so much action there) that you can't always count on our thread being near the top of the list.

Just go to 'My Account' or 'Subscribed Threads' under Quick Links.

Bugger. :( I hope not... though lurking isn't so bad.

@Sam_Yeager
Yes. Well summarised.
And that's a very useful post from Erkon from the MW thread. I'm sure they won't mind us Geezers borrowing their script. (it doesn't come with a curse, does it?)

Does the Wooden Spoon qualify as a curse?

If you can derive any inspiration, you are most welcome. My post was based on the Big Pig version in SGOTM4.

Please notice that we will probably reduce the number of hours between available saves and the got-it message, in order to speed up the game. We will also make the post more friendly and clear. At least if it's up to me, since we haven't discussed any potential future SGOTM yet :mischief:

From Erkon's post:

"Don’t promote units until they are close to action (unless the promotion increases movement)."

I have to say, I am not a big fan of this, especially in a succession game. Why? I think there is too great a risk that someone will forget to promote a unit before an AI attack, especially if that unit became eligible on a previous person's turn. I'd hate to lose a unit because it was attacked unpromoted.

...

There are several reasons why we in MW prefer to wait with the promotion of units, and I think you just confirmed one of them: each player has an individual preference for promotions. It does however add to the complexity and makes you vulnerable to sneak attacks as you stated. Then we have the issue with general promotions (combat & city raid) vs specialists (cover, shock etc). This is connected to how combat is resolved. If your units are stronger than the enemy units (higher base combat value), combat promotions are preferable (especially against mixed stacks). If your units are weaker, combat promotions are most often not good. Regarding mixed stacks: you will typically sacrifice a unit or two to weaken certain units. Example: you have knights and macemen, but the defender has two war elephants and then longbowmen. It may then be clever to promote maces with cover so that you target the war elephants, so that your knights then attack the longbowmen. I must admit that I don't master this skill myself fully, but instead of getting a lot of combats in the 40-60% range, you get a few at 20-40% and the rest above 60%. It's a way to reduce risk.

...
PM team:  Why PM the whole team and not post in the thread?
...

My point was to put focus on the limitation that you can only send a PM to five people, and that is a problem if the team is larger than six players.

If you can derive any inspiration, you are most welcome.

Thanks for not minding us nick parts of it. :) Your clarifications are most welcome. :goodjob:
