SGOTM 06 - Xteam

It was a bold move commiting to Astro right from the start. Medium and small maps have a high likelihood of galley access, although you could argue that the mapmaker wanted to give teams a fresh challenge from SGOTM5.

When LC challenged us with his proposal on how to get Astronomy in the BC years we reasoned a bit about it and finally decided that it could be a competitive strategy even if all AIs could be reached by Galleys. Maybe not vs direct galley access, but definitely if culture bridges would be required.

Glad to not have lost Bronze on one or two turns :D
Congrats for a nice Bronze :goodjob:
Thank you.

We were sweating a bit watching you as well. :scan:
You guys also played a good game. :goodjob:

With Smurkz completion of the game, I have added them and CRC to the spreadsheet attached below. Should Gypsy Kings' date beat CRC, I will add them upon completion. CRC completed a nice CS sling with The Oracle.

:goodjob: Xers.
I must say I find the gold chopping a bit cheesy. I'll remember where I found out about it if I ever use it, though [pimp]

I must say I find the gold chopping a bit cheesy.

Unrealistic to be sure, but definitely not what I would classify as an exploit. Gold Chopping has several opportunity costs. For one, it takes a lot of workers. Building workers comes at the expense of building other units or buildings, and using workers for gold chopping comes as the expense of using them for improvements. Secondly, using forests for gold means not using them for building units. We could have done a faster military buildup at the end if we had more forests left.

Gold chopping is a nice tactic for making an often useless leader trait (protective) useful.

:goodjob: Congratulations on a game well played, and a bronze medal well earned! Next time... :mischief:

It sounds like the next one will be in BtS.

:twitch: :help::scared::suicide:

I'm not so good at BtS. I can win about 50% on  noble  on small continents with everything else random. Anyone up for a SG in BtS to help me get better before the next sgotm?

It looks like at this point there's no guarantee that the next SGOTM will be in BtS, with the final patch not out yet.

If we do get confirmation of BtS at some point, it would be good to either do an XTeam SG or to have some private discussion about specific BtS tactics that could put us on the medal stand again.

I assume that we have enough current and former XTeamers to field a team.

Yes, I have not read of any timetable for a final patch for BtS. This thread has what little info I have seen about it?

The next SGOTM may be a vanilla game.

There are certainly some differences! I think that our game testing was a big help (definitely for me! ;) ) and we may be able to use that to learn things specific to the next game? Although I could easily be persuaded to cook something up and run with it. :mischief:

I don't think this will be a problem, especially if it is in BtS. Who is up for another?

I need to log more BTS games myself. My messing around in the HOF area has given me a better feel for Van & Warlords. My late game VC types (space, UN diplo) need some work and I have not taken a BTS to the new corporation stage yet.

@rrau - one of the current HOF minor gauntlets is a chieftan space game. One is for Van/WL and the other is for BTS. You might want to check it out.

There's a new BTSGOTM that started 3/15. Is it acceptable to have private discussions -- following spoiler rules, perhaps -- about the game with team members while playing?

I don't think so. But thanks for letting me know that there's one out there. I might dip my toe back in the gotm waters for it.....Once I finish my try at the minor gauntlet.

The key would be to follow spoiler rules, I would think basic game mechanic type questions would be okay. Things like tech path and civics, but not detailed mm of cities or revealing map details.

I think we can talk about what happened in our games once we have all passed the spoiler requirements or finished the game. There are generally two spoilers, so that would provide two opportunities? :crazyeye:

And I think we would have to use the spoiler threads because anyone can read this one now so we would be spoiling the game for anyone who might be reading our thread... ;)

If we want to discuss BtS games and tactics for the purpose of improving our chances of medaling in the next SGOTM, well, I guess we don't want to so publicly for everyone else to read. Maybe some of us can volunteer to research/explore one of the new features of BtS, write up the findings, and send it to Xteamers via PM or some offside discussion group. Off the top of my head, some topics that I think we need to understand are Espionage, new wonders, new Civs, and new techs and great people tech preferences.

One major thing about battles has changed. Cats can't kill. That has really messed up my war skills as I've leaned towards heavy cats and lighter actual troops in vanilla and warlords. I've yet to find the right balance in BtS. I'll see if I can find the thread of a great espionage SG I read.

Espionage seems pervasive, but it's not clear how important. GP tech preferences, on the other hand, won't impinge often but could be extremely important. Is there a thread somewhere providing that info?

Most AI's are nuisances with pillaging resources with the spies and rarely save enough points to sabotage the spaceship parts.....I think it's only happened to me once or twice.
