SGOTM 07 - The Real Ms. Beyond

I have just started to read the other threads (starting with MW which is the longest, most detailed and usually the best planned and with comments on the others as they have finished a long time ago).
It seems that some of the reasons we won't be in the fastest (along other things)
1. We failed to realised that domination was possible just with our island (and therefore much much easier/faster than space).
2. We were the only one who had NY turn into a holy city...
3. the fastest teams seem to have skipped early defence (and defence tech), but WE -despite being with better 'power rating'- have been sneak-attacked early (that need to be confirm with more reading to see if that had happened to others).

SGOTMs are one of the few times I feel stupid when playing civ. I think I've played about 5 now and every single time our team has lost by 500-800 years, usually to the russian team. Those guys are amazing, they come up with strategies I'd never have dreamed of.

I wish I read Russian so that I could understand how CRC planned and building the UN so early.

Yeah quite amazing how some other teams pulled it off. Makes me feel like complete CIV n00b, but it's cool..

CRC has at least the save files on the server which you can examine, btw. I think I will have a look when I have the time.. and I'm also waiting for the next game!

(edit)

OK I had a look at them.. basically they just didn't build any defence at all (and didn't get declared exept for monty somewhere in the end!!!!), build pyramids and a huge representation scientist machine. They got also lucky to get judaism from asoka very early on, so they focused on diplo victory and started converting everybody. Bulbed a shitload of scientist, found taoism. Around edu they had a massive tech lead. Went for astronomy to spread judaism to other continent. Liberalism tech was.. Physics! because they were so much in advance they could wait. Then to mass media, the UN and the rest is victory... somewhere around 1100AD I guess. Wow. But I still think it unfair that they didn't get declared.. with two warriors defending they would've been crushed to pieces if anybody would have wanted it.

Grumble, mutter. Looks like the Geezers attracted that bit of bad RNG.

Alot of people had just warriors defending.. I don't think smurkz had much more for example...

We only had a single warrior, for a very very long time. (Until around astronomy? After machinery, anyway, because it was maces we finally built.) Like Gosha said CRC did in their thread, we had our nearest neighbors up to pleased with us relatively quickly, which removed the risk of war declaration until much later.

Or that was the theory, anyway -- Lizzy went Confucian on us, which left her at Cautious once we finally got Judaism, and made her theoretically a possibility to declare on us, if only a small one. But it didn't happen. Khan went after us once, which caused more trouble than it really should have, but that was the only time.

We did too... Washington declared at Pleased

I believe the AI decides on a war declaration before he actually declares, and the attitude at the moment of decision is what matters for the war declaration.

That should be the case. Try uploading some autosaves up to 10 turns before and check his attitude and whether he has enough on his hands.

chmoosi, TheArchduke, Jabah:

With our team greatly reduced and the addition of three new members, I no longer feel that the Realms Beyond name applies. I have no problem with keeping the name for old times sake, but perhaps we should consider renaming? (Until we re-beef up our team with active RB members that is)

I already posted on the RB forums a while back and there seems to be little to no interest, which I blame a SGOTM burnout on. I, myself, was planning to take more of a backseat role in the upcoming SGOTM (I simply wanted to stay involved), but it seems like that won't be happening.

While I won't be playing #8, I want to wish you good luck.
