SGOTM 08 - Fifth Element

I'm just not sold on the "take J" gameplan yet.

There's no one else to attack until we get Galleons and some Cats. We're not going after longbows without cats.

So are you suggesting our army takes a nap? If not, then you are in the "take J" camp.

I am in the process of getting a new and turning in my old laptop. My original civ disk is giving me a data2.cab error despite it working to run when using it to play vanilla. I may be on hold for a few days till I find a workaround for this.

I have had this problem with other Civ disks. I seems the new drive doesn't like them. My solution was to use a network CD/DVD that I knew would read it to install.

While taking a nap they provide much needed :):):) to our cities till we get astro and the resource trades needed to free them from their winter's naps.

I guess I just don't understand what the long term plan is. This is sort of like a space race with some cracked skulls along the way. If the ultimate goal is to race to rocketry then why screw around with J who will pose 0 threat (again this is monarch) and sag the economy at this crucial stage.

I think after Astonomy (and certainly after StateProp) Every city, no matter how bad or far away adds to our economy in a positive way.

OK, there are still too many opinions flying around for my liking. Hmm... that sounds wrong. I like the opinions, but we are not agreed on our direction. Add to this that it is midnight again (a suprise visit by my aunt ruined all my plans), and the fact that we are still way ahead in terms of turns played to a lot of teams, means that I won't play tonight. What I will do is play at least a partial set tomorrow morning, to raze the copper city, get peace, and regroup the army, as we have at least agreed on that much. This will be in 10-12 hrs.

Looking at the save I have a couple recommendations.

Build a market in Parma ASAP. This means before any units. The shrine city should get as many economy boosting buildings as possible.

We need to build some missionaries. That will save our economy now rather than waiting to research Communism someday. Once the market is finished, every city with the religion will generate +1.25 gold in Parma. One or two missionaries should be sent to the other continent to civs that spread religion (India and HRE are the best candidates). Others should spread to Joao. Once we get trade routs up to Joao's cities a lot of them will get religion without missionaries anyway.

We will get a Great Person in 5th in 3 turns. We should save great people for the corporate HQ as they become available. In other words, do not settle or bulb with any generated GP.

I'm still not sold on State Property. We could get more benefit out of running corporations not to mention that we need to build the corporate HQ to get the wonder points for this VC. I think we really need to discuss our long term research and tech trading strategy before we rush any more TS.

Don't forget SP is not just huge cash savings, it's also +10% hammers and +food in workshops, etc. Corps are built in 1 turn making them ideal for building in the last few turns of the game. Unless there is some great corporation exploit strategy (like the sushi one) that we want to try, SP is the next beeline.

Getting Comm from Lib also means we can adopt SP + Free Religion together in 1 turn. (unless people are thinking pacifism?)

P.S. I totally agree with your other post.

I agree with WT. We can switch to State Property now, and switch back when we're ready to pop all the Corporations.

If not then they need to update the info center where it is listed as a wonder.

I believe Scotland Yard was a wonder previous to BtS, but isn't a wonder anymore (like an academy is not a wonder)

Yes, in Vanilla and Warlords it was a national wonder, in BtS is a special building, like Academies.

Question (i guess WT can answer):
is in BtS only that in Quick you need only 15000 culture instead of 25000?
I just played a Vanilla cultural (terrible) in quick and i has to arrive at 25000... a nightmare.

OK, quick question. I have played a few turns, and razed the copper city. It turns out Shaka has another city in the north on the marble. So do we war for another 3 turns to take it out, so we can avoid splitting stacks later?

The story so far:

Sweetacshon: It will take 3 more turns to eliminate him in the north.

Did you try to ask for the other city instead? I suppose that's his capitol now, and he won't give it.

Good job burning the green mace. I wasn't sure everyone knew that tactic.

Good job spotting the wine trade.

Good job adjusting Espionage.

Not happy with 0% science. don't we have over 400 gold? RACE to Astron please. I recommended 70% science and I didn't hear any opposition.

I'm still for peace. It will take too long to finish up north, heal, and march down south. We can clean up later. Peace, crank up the research. Why not take the free city anyway? It has food, right? And marble IIRC. That will make for a nice trade resource. We could give the city away if we think it hurts our economy.

Dang, that means he was offering the south city before. Getting that for peace 5 turns ago was the right move, but at least we didn't leave him with metal this way.

We should be able to split our troops for cleanup. No need to take north, heal, and then go south. There is no benefit in leaving Shaka intact unless he will gift us some stuff. If the city he is offering is crap then I vote to finish him off.

As far as corporations go, by researching Railroad and Corporation we can build Mining Inc. netting +1 hammer for Coal, Copper, Iron, Gold, and Silver resources. That will produce a lot more than +10% from State Property.

Getting either Cereal Mills or Sid Sushi wil net a lot more food as well.

If we run Free Market with our corporations we get +1 trade route per city and reduce our corporation maintenance by 25%. If the corporate HQ are in Parma with Market (+25%), Grocier (+25%), Bank (+50%) and Wall Street (+100%) then each branch will net 3 gpt which will will make up for the maintenance costs.

edit: We should pick 2 or 3 corporations that we can use without conflicting with each other. The others can be popped at the end like you suggest. I think Mining Inc. and Sid Sushi may be the best options, but we should discuss this more.

On the economy front we need to start building courthouses in a lot of cities.
