SGOTM 08 - Fifth Element

I didn't think J had LB yet.
According to the trade screen, Joao can research Feudalism, but he does not have it yet. I can see a crossbow in one of his cities though.

EDIT: His cities are still full of Archers, so I'm sure he doesn't have Longbows yet. That said though, how long can it be?

Joao has 1 source of Iron by Evora. I suggest we load a defenders (couple of spears, and a couple of maces preferably) onto galleys to be dropped off on that iron the turn we declare. They'll need to hold for 1 turn, raze it, and preferably defend that tile from workers re-mining the iron until our main stack reaches it.

The galleys can also continue to ferry troops there to keep Joao busy trying to take them down. This will leave less opposition for our main stack so it can move more quickly through the cities.

Sounds like a good plan, except that according to our military adviser we currently have only one galley (parked on the fish SW of the capital). :(

galley? not Galleon?
Um, yup. 1 Galley, 2 Triremes, 1 Caravel, and zero Galleons. I think we can upgrade the one for 90 gold tho. :D

Yes, and we can build a couple of them. I think they can help to speed up the war.

Okay, I'm looking more closely at the save now.

We've got 3 turns left on philosophy, but I see our closest rival (Gandhi) hasn't got education yet (though he does have philosophy). Is the Great Artist from Music worth a short detour here or not? It looks like it would take us only 2 turns. We could grab it right now or wait until after philosophy or ignore it. What say y'all?

The other Great Person tech path still looks wide open because no one even has guilds yet.

Ha! I just noticed we have another problem too. That ocean between our territory and Joao is a kind of inland sea -- our ships cannot get there without another "canal" city, even by sailing all the way around Joao's territory! The ice sheets at the South Pole cut it off in both directions by connecting with the "snaky" continents.

Landing troops on the iron tile is going to be tricky if we can't bring any ships. :p

Kind of a "Snaky" map design, no?

Sure there isn't some path from the north coast? Or some free tile where park a small force, waiting the war to quick arrive to the iron?
In this case, better build some UU, i used them once, and they seem better than normat WE.
At least they can defend our maces.
If Music is only 2 turns it can worth a detour.

What about building a fort south of Nobamba? Forts act as canals in BTS IIRC.

Nobamba is currently set to build a mace, but that is where our Great General #2 is settled. We only have three catapults right now. Shouldn't Nobamba be set to crank out cats for us like Kruschev's sausages? We need the level two accuracy promotion on stacks of four cats for quick city reduction, don't we?

Here is a quick count of our current military:

13 Macemen
5 Spearmen (including one Great Medic)
3 Catapults
3 Chariots
3 Warriors
1 Axe
1 galley (upgrade to galleon)
2 Triremes
1 Caravel

Just looking at that list tells me we're going to need more city defenders too. We really don't have any archers or longbows yet? I'm thinking it is going to take us more than seven turns to get this war against Joao set up properly. Any thoughts?

I'm considering whipping the Observatory in Marbles after Fifthburg grows to pop 14 (in three turns). It looks like it would be a double-whip, but we could re-grow that city quickly by temporarily reassigning Fifthburg's southern fish. Any objections?

How is Farcanal still building an Archer? Did we just get Feudalism?

If so, is that build going to get delayed now, or will it still pop an archer next turn?

Given that Nobamba has a Great General settled, shouldn't we build more workshops there? It is almost full of cottages right now. We could put a workshop on the open grass tile, but shouldn't we also consider paving over one or two of the plains cottages that haven't got any turns invested in them yet? It looks like the two best candidates would be the tiles 1NW and the one 2W of Nobamba. Please correct me if I'm missing something here.

Is there anyone we are particularly focused on trying to cozy up with these days? Should I be concerned about not giving in to someone's demand for anything?

Um... is anyone out there?:dunno:

We just got Lit this turn, so we don't know if anyone has Music yet by looking at the tech screen. It may appear next turn. Gandhi like to go for it. I wondering if we did steal music out from under him if he'd then move on to Edu. That seems like the next tech for him. If he didn't have paper, I could see him going for Eng. or guilds, but I think he'll do Edu.

Absolutely. Shaka built those cottages and we can convert them exactly in the order you described.

It's always wise to use the whip on cities like that while we have slavery. Go for it.

Fifthburg is working an unimproved hill.

It's a forested hill, right? I think it becomes a mine next turn. Either way 5th needs to put every ounce of energy into hammers until the Oxford finishes. Then it should move off that hill. 5th should also consider building Research more often when possible. I agree we might need a couple military to get rolling on Joao, but our military instructor should take over soon. BTS is much friendlier with building wealth, research.

Should we gamble on switching to Music right now? That way if Ghandi doesn't get if first next turn, we should be guaranteed to get it first the following turn, right? [QUICK EDIT:] I think it is worth the risk of potentially losing just one turn of unnecessary research.
