SGOTM 09 - Unusual Suspects

No city razing is on.
Yes we already have wine hooked.
I like Moai in Panama. I don't even know about capturing Atlantis.

Per Gitbliss, we could get cow, rice and iron in 5th city's fat cross by settling directly on wine.

We shouldn't try to settle Greenland (Island) Production City until we have triremes, right? Panama is higher priority, IMO.

If I get metal casting in a trade, do we try to stack a couple triremes to defend clam boat for Thebes?

The PPP in post #389 has been edited. Changes are in magenta. Or shall I repost the PPP at end of thread?

Settling decision is tricky. I would prefer in place so that maoi city gets iron...but we might be too slow for pig city spot...so I am not sure. I would take the risk though and settle in place and try to acceletrate settler as much as possible.

If you get metal casting in a deal then build a tririme and try to kill any galley that comes on coast, kill then retreat to city..so we get a promoted tririme that can do some damage...first strikes are awesome in tririmes vs galleys..

Also don't forget to put a forest preserve in the forest east past capital BFC so we get a better chance for forest to spread on those river tiles.

I think we should have ur Maoi city on the hill right next to the Iron, so that we can bget the pigs, Iron, Fish and Flood plains, making it an awesome site. So that would be the 6th city and that would mean that it is best for us to settle where the xbow and settler are already.

think we need to road towards Babylon so that we can get some much needed foreign trade routes and when we do get them, I think it might be good to get Currency, since we will get better results, but right now it is not needed, since we have no foreign routes. Getting Jaoa would be awesome.

Here is a crazy thought, but we are at threat of attacks from the barbs, so why don't we build a carrier, so that we can attack the galleys? All we need to do is mine the uranium and we can build ourselves a carrier to defend our waters and to scout the world. How does that idea sound?

There is no getting "pigs, iron, fish" in one city. I do not understand.

I'll add a road to Hammi to my PPP.

We might need fission to use the uranium for a nuclear powered carrier. Anyone know?

Settler will be top priority in Sparta.

Will do.

Got it. Added to PPP.

There is a way that Joao could plant to get clam, fish and pig all in one city. That is a little too far for us to grab, I think. If Joao plants another city down there before we do I will of course stop and report back here. I need a consensus on where we want Panama City.

I have no objections to you playing as soon as you are ready (i.e. without my vote). I will open the save tonight and reply in about 6 hours (midnite server time).

That's my choice for our next city. City 5 aka Panama city, 2S of pigs; pigs, fish, clams in BFC. Only 4 lake tiles, but two more hills (and clams) than 1S of pigs. Where t69 barb archer is laying the foundation. Joao is helping to fogbust - hopefully that archer is already gone (perhaps it damaged Joao's archer). Probably take along another military unit to be safe. This can be our great person fishery.
Send missionary down there too.

Then 6th city 1S of current settler on wine.

Remember, barbarians can't spawn within two tiles of any other units. But can attack any coastal from their galleys.
Concur with idea of building trireme. If stack of galleys where two currently are, then it could move out from Thebes, sink galley, and return to Thebes in same turn.

There is a Zulu city 9 South of Angle. And another one 4 SE of it. Relocate airship to Zulu city of your choice.

I believe the "No City Razing" option is in effect. So if we capture we keep or try to give away. Low quality cities that can't cover the maintenance cost increase slow us down from the race to the spaceship.

Good catch. I totally forgot about that. Hmmm... need to rethink Hammy. His good cities won't be as effective either if we do not eliminate him entirely.

Sparta is about to grow past happy cap - suggest two scientists and reallocate citizens to prevent growth.

We might need fission to use the uranium for a nuclear powered carrier. Anyone know?

Correct. In building naval units, uranium can only be used as substitute for oil AFTER fission is discovered. Combustion comes before fission, and oil unlocks fighter planes and tanks as well.

I can go along with Panama city 2S of pigs being our next city. Follow that up by settling on wine. Remeber to check for trades of extra wine. If nobody has anything to give that we want, gift it to Joaoa for diplo.

Good luck TC!

Ok. We now have kcd Swede and Deck advocating for rushing south for the Panama City site with 3 food. I will agree to that. We won't completely cover the isthmus with our culture there. I don't think Joao would go up the left branch of the isthmus and settle west/NW of Panama City, but I am not sure.

Tell me when we have enough votes for me to proceed. I can start playing in 10 hours at the earliest. PPP is in post #389.

Its been approx 24hrs since you posted the updated plan and asked for input, so I think you have the green light to go ahead.

I'm not so worried about Joao moving to our other site; losing Panama by settling the other first was far more likely. But anything can happen.

Good luck!

Hammurabi shows WHEOOHRN when you mouse a civ in the "Declare War On" section of the diplo screen. Guess that means us he's preparing to fight? He is pleased with us, though. We have +4 with him, trade routes, etc.

Anyway, I figure it is a good stopping point. Posted the Save.

Some Highlights:

We got the circumnavigation bonus.

Pretty much the whole map is explored. It's definitely Earth-like.

Open borders with everyone. Good relations all around, pretty much.

Joao converted to Confucianism, so we did the same.

4 universities done. Two more done in a few turns.

We could have liberalism in 4 turns if we wanted.

Settler, galley, and a couple workers are waiting to settle Greenland.

Lots of cats and maces.

Excellent. Good job. Lots of progress and catching up on turns played.

Hammurabi shows WHEOOHRN when you mouse a civ in the "Declare War On" section of the diplo screen. Guess that means us he's preparing to fight? He is pleased with us, though. We have +4 with him, trade routes, etc.
He is Cautious with us (and Wang) now.

classical_hero - up, kcd_swede - on deck; then: Steelhorse, vra379971, Deckhand; Indiansmoke, totallycres
But, are we ready for attack on Hammy now? So, is Indiansmoke up?

Well not sure what happened here....I thought we were preparing for war but we are 33 turns down the line building wonders, spies, libraries, markets...adopting organized religion...

I am not saying this is all wrong, could well be the way to do things..... but this is not what we discussed is it...33 turns for quick speed is rather alot...will have to look at the save to see the situation.

You'll see the maces and cats when you log in. There is a central stack, then there are some around the map that could be pulled to the front if you need them. All the airships are in waiting Hammi's cities. I put signs with locations/counts of his units.

33 turns got us back into the middle of the pack of other SGotM teams, year-wise.

Only Wonder I attempted was ... We had a shot at Maussallos(sp?) in 4 turns, took it for 2 turns, lost the race.

Libraries are prereqs for universities, right? Education and cheap unis were noted in the PPP.

The cap's production is awesome. With some overflow from a previous build of a cat, you can do some one-turn maces.

Monasteries cannot be built, so I switched to org reli to get missionaries. Got both Hammurabi and Joao into our religion.

Market in cap took two turns. Uni took one. Library took one. Spies took one turn.

re: spies. We had poisonings, destroyed uranium mine, a destroyed granary. I put spies in the cities that were getting sabotaged. Even caught some enemy spies!

A note on the Diplo/tech situation. H. Capac is the only tech competitor and he was VERY protective of his technologies. The tech situation was mostly us bringing along the other civs with gifts (everyone but Hammi), and Mr. Capac getting mad techy with it in his 3 cities. He has not expanded much into Australia. When people demanded World Maps or techs I gave in (except not Hammi, and not electricity)
