SGOTM 10 - The A Team

Nice work.. grats on winning
It would be nice to hear your thoughts on why you made the map the way you did. It was a good one. The Barbs were incredibly tough, and our not building Knights Templar made them even tougher.

Actually, the map was mostly just a random continents map.. obviously I moved some starting positions.. and adjusted the land around the barbarian stronghold :)

Also adjusted map so Byzantines could get dromons across and make contact with barbs.. yup.. that is right.. you were the only ones to have contact with them most of the time.. so most of the time the TTs GLib effect did not work for them :)

Was kinda a late minute change that I made the barb guards so easy.. untill a few days before game started I had them at 15 defence... but decided I didnt want another 6 month game again :p

One thing about the map always puzzled me thou.. for some reason the dutch would build a lot of curraghs.. even if they can reach most of the lands by land.. any clue what could have triggered that? :)

Also congrats from me. I was not online for some days. So I was very surprised to see that the game is already over.

It is a pity the barbs dont have saltpeter. Klarius et al might run over them with knights until they get to the capital...

Doesn't locked war give all the AI civilizations contact?

Wow, didn't think we could finsih this in two turnsets after my turnset. Well done, Obormot and killercane.

Now it will be very interesting to see if someone is faster...

It does.. but there wasnt enough locked war slots available for all the AIs.. so had had to put them at war using a different method.. and did it the same way for all the AIs to make it consistant :)

Proposal for our Spoiler, please make any corrections. We can wait a week or two before posting it.

Cast
Col. John "Hannibal" Smith-> Obormot
Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck-> Socralynnek
Sgt. Bosco Albert "B.A." Baracus-> TheRAT
Capt. H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock-> Hendrikszoon

Supporting Cast of myself, TimBentley, and Lord Hamster.

After much discussion, the team decided to move the settler inland to the grassland spot. The move was made up for by working the wheat earlier. The initial plan was fast research to navigation, and take the war to the Barbs. Obormot led us off, and is responsible should we attain the Wooden Spoon. We sacrificed science initially to get a granary up and running and explore around a bit.

We soon realized that the Barbs were a worthy foe:
Well, something IS evil with the game. I loaded my save again just to have a look and pressed F8: the barb power graph is thicker then combined our + incan + sumerian and they have 42% population.

After my turnset, Rat Baracus took over and we found out that our military plans had been stolen! Dr. Evil (aka Gyathaar) had provided his Barbs with some nifty tricks. The Rat's reaction:

At this point our initial research of Writing came in, and there was much doubt whether we could attain the vaunted Republic slingshot. 2 were for trying and 2 were against; Mad Dog Hendrikszoon broke the tie by devising a plan to halt our growth and impose scientists in all cities, including our carefully set up settler factory :(. A rare photo of Hendrikszoon at the time while concocting this plan:

Though we lost a turn by switching to CoL, the plan succeeded and Socralynnek brought the slingshot home in 1550 BC.

The next mission for the A Team was to bring home the Great Lighthouse so that we could have a Golden Age. But plans went awry in 1050 BC when the evil Dutch built the Lighthouse. All was not lost however as we decided to maintain the prebuild and capture Chichen Itza with the Colossus. The years to follow were filled with many wars and library building for the English people. We entered MA at 750 BC when the Byz finally researched Construction. Both sci civs received Feudalism :(. The prebuild was switched over, so we waited until post-Astronomy for our golden age.

The Barbs built the Pyramids and the Great Wall which was a disappointment, as well as the scientific civs both drawing Feudalism, but fast research brought us to the end of this spoiler at 90 BC with the discovery of Astronomy.

excellent write-up. Agree with waiting a little to post. klarius are suspecting us to have finished and trying to beat us to the date now...

The write-up is fine!

At least klarius doesn't know anything about the barb guards and so they might have to attack them with knights which is suicide...

It seems that Klarius is clever enough to wait until they have Cavalry. But at least they filled all their Armies with Knights (there is one Army filled with only one Knight). So if they have bad luck and they will get no Leader for the next twenty turns, it is possible that it will become very close. In any other case they will finish before 600AD.

And they have one advantage: they know that we have won at 650AD. So in the last turns before 650AD they will risk all.

It is quite interesting sitting on the sidelines. I also think the K Men will beat us by less than 5 turns. What is the over/under on that bet?

Liz is making a push but they are going all the way for steam?!? Very interesting ideas out there amongst the various threads. We had no early curragh/exploration, so Im glad the Barbs didnt jump on one of those 1 tile islands.

I should have uploaded the save to the thread rather than submit it. Oh well live and learn, and it probably wont make a difference either way. We will see how it turns out.

Hi Guys,

I just had a chance to read through your thread. It was a very interesting read. I especially liked that you were very committed for the slingshot. It was the best solution and you did that exceptionally well. Great game :goodjob:
You had tough luck at the early middle ages with the AIs drawing feudalism.
And at the end Liz and us were more focussed on the conquest. Looking forward for another good fight in SGOTM 11!

Ronald

I am in and ThERat, too. If our team forms again and if you still want me in, we can continue hunting the laurels...
Our first award is already there...;-)

Sounds good. If we do not hear from anyone else I will pull some others into the fold.
