SGOTM 12 - Fifth Element

We'll get bronze by a fair margin, congrats all!

There is talk of you getting the wooden spoon for lowest score. As one team didn't finish you are a contender for this. I assume they mean the score in game not score for completing the game.

I am still wondering how many teams will clear all the fallout still. We took the view quite early we would need to take out the Ai. I must say most teams seem to be dragging their feet completing the game. Relying on the Ai to do this could be interesting. The Ai do tend to clear fallout and then work the land.

Waiting game I guess for the rest.

Huh, I hadn't looked so closely and didn't realize that OSS was so close to Plastic Ducks.

I thinking our Mining strategy could have been better - we had to really make a horrible hybrid GP farm / production city in order to get enough engineering great person points. (National Epic and Ironworks in the same city, and since it was a great production city we couldn't make it a gold-spinning merchant specialist city). We got our GE, but we had to deliberately hold back on other Great Persons. Had we decided on Mining Inc earlier, maybe we could have generated one early from Hanging Gardens / Pyramids / early Forge, then pumped out GS after GS from a GP Farm.

I still think Sushi would have been useful - big cities, lots of specialists, convert farms to workshops or cottages. Also, we captured the Kremlin at some point (relatively early?) and a sushi-powered Kremlin whip isn't too bad in generating hammers.

Anyway, not to say that we did a bad job, just trying to learn. For one thing, I'd heard of the camera flying thing, but never done it before ...

Where's that popcorn-watching-movie icon ...

We probably should have gone for maces+cats instead of phants+cats, which would synergize with an earlier forge since we would not delay MC. We could have gambled on several shots at ~30% GE instead of what we did. Also, we should have realized the potential of farming+whipping as opposed to cottages. Caste would not be needed until late if we could quickly whip all the GS+GM allowing buildings instead.
But Mining is still the best, we just needed a better early war progress, more settled cities and better city build management. Probably could have gotten mining running a fair bit earlier.

That makes no sense. It has to be the slowest finish that gets the spoons. Otherwise, who cares about the spoons then anyway.

I agree absolutely. We probably get the wooden spoon for the lowest Power at the end of the game too!

Awards
Laurels will be awarded to up to three teams who accomplish the winning goals fastest (Ie by the earliest in-game dates).
Wooden spoons will go to the team who finishes the game (win or lose) with the lowest score.
According to Alan we can both win Bronze (sure like Hell, at this point) and "win" the Wooden Spoon. The in-game score penalizes teams who finish fast, so a team winning 50 turns after us can probably have a better score. But in GotM competitions the score is the one you see in your personal HoF and this is modified by the date+difficulty.

In any case, we finish 3rd :D

I've seen some hope the AI will clean the fallout... i guess they will have a bad surprise and a loooong delay. The best way to have a thing done is to do it by yourself.

In that case, bring on the spoons! I almost would consider it an efficiency award :p

Hey I am not knocking your great performance. You were clearly very efficient in the way you reached Space and cleared the fallout.

Sometimes a wooden spoon does not really prove much.

Of course winning 2 awards for the game would rank you first in terms of number of awards. ;)

Would it of been possible to beat PD score by ignoring main game goals? Hmmm.

And there we have it! OSS wins after all. So close that you really cannot say who played better, since the randomness could have swung the result, but both OSS and PD deserve huge credit for their games.

Yes, they've beaten PD for 1 turn. 1 measly turn. I was a fan of PD at this point, just because Mitchum joined OSS.

No more next one, it seems that Dhoomstriker will join them. So, no hope for them in next one.

Congrats on your game, Fifth Element. Well played! :goodjob:

I'm not sure why you're so bitter, BLubmuz. I had a lot of fun playing SG11 with FE. However, it was clear that the HUGE number of posts and MM-intensive play was an issue with the majority of the team. Because of that, my plan was to retire from SGOTM games completely and just play xOTM games. Then LowtherCastle asked me to play with OSS. I read through their previous game and it looked like a good fit for my style of play, so I thought I would give it another shot.

Congrats again, Fifth Element, on your Bronze medal. You couldn't have done it with me... ;)

And how many posts did OSS have in this game? ;) :D

That is serious ocd to get to 4500 ish post! PD managed 1 turn less and 3500 posts less. Then again Kossin and duck were mainly guiding PD ship. When you have 2 players like that on your team it is almost rude to stop and question their methods as often that is just your madness.

I mean really one turn. Perhaps next game Erkon could give those teams the Russians with a few Mech armours and transports to fend off.

We could actually do with some ideas for the next game. Where do you really go from domination/space and lots of fallout. Tough call.

One idea is to have a game with very few health or happiness resources on the map. Well certainly in our starting area. Perhaps after all the fallout was cleared a lot of the land became contaminated and many key resources were left to waste. Our starving people demanded action and forgiveness from the godess herself.

I do like the idea of us playing The English on a land filled with 7 shaka tribes. To the death! Someone always said playing an all imperialist or nutcase map was difficult. Then again this may be down to more luck.

Hmmmm I'll sleep and think about some ideas.

And how many posts did OSS have in this game? ;) :D

One of our goals this game was to break Murky Waters' record for most posts, which we did quite easily. The common denominator between MW and OSS is LC. I'm not pointing any fingers... :mischief:

I feel sorry for anyone who wants to learn anything from our game. It will take weeks to read through it all!

and this is why OSS needed that extra month. To read all of LC's comments. ;o)

I disagree on this part. Key in teams is varied point of views! (And then choosing the best way forward.) We certainly could have used a hand here and there :)

Perhaps LC should swap teams. ;)

Joking aside it is useful to have someone who thinks outside the box. I think a lot of players have a certain style and stick to it. Even I am guilty of this.
