SGOTM 13 - Gypsy Kings

It might slow us down finishing Cathy, but once we have her Great Lighthouse we could just camp for a little while.
We have it already! It helped tremendously with our revenue, we were losing money at 0% Science before I captured it.

I have the save. I plan to play in 41 hours, because I'll be away for a long weekend after that.

Workers
Whatever looks useful, except as noted below

Controlling costs.
  • keep Madrid for the healing value, if nothing else. bc thinks we raze Madrid, but we keep Bjorgvin since we will get the ivory from it. He's got a point - I had been thinking we'd rather keep Madrid in case we get an GArtist to bomb there, but some other city could serve that purpose also. At first glance it looks like it might be a useful jumping off point for attacking Izzy, but all of our units will be coming on boats, so surely we'll be doing naval landings next to the cities we attack first. So maybe Madrid is not a keeper. It is the Buddhist holy city, but has no shrine. The Jewish city of Izzy does have a shrine. Amsterdam and Utrecht are keepers for their wonders. The Hague will draft a lot of units, so probably worth keeping. Rotterdam can go.
  • We're currently running 20% culture to keep things happier. I need to assess what to do once some happiness comes in. Some of our cities are, and more will become useless as time goes on. So long as we have decent prospects of paying the bills, I think we should retain Cathy's cities that look decent for drafting. We don't care about (say) GH unhappily starving itself to size 1 if it means we can keep a Cathy city that can draft four more muskets. We do have a chance of a large wad of cash coming in from a GMerchant, and we'll keep getting money from city captures.
  • Might want to work commerce tiles or build more wealth depending on the situation. Building wealth commits to not buying more units from that city, else we should not have been committing to the wrong end of a 3:1 ratio. PC is a good example. Getting units from it to the front is a pain, so its hammers being transferred via the economy to a third as many hammers in a city near the front can be OK if we really need it.
  • Cities near the front can still build units, but cities far from the front should build wealth and maximize wealth output with whatever tiles make sense.
  • We might want to reduce drafting to 2 musketeers every turn and avoid drafting if it cripples a city now. We are running a deficit gold wise it seems. So we need those cities producing some wealth and commerce.
  • We can resume drafting 3 per turn from Ragnar's cities once he is eliminated and London perhaps.
  • We might want to err on the side of razing cities now instead of keeping them too now.

Since we are in a wealth deficit, we need to consider saving the gold we make instead of buying units. I think things are going to improve significantly when Ragnar is eliminated, but I would think twice about buying a unit now.

Cities
Don't build wealth in decent production cities. Using hammers to build wealth that might be used to buy hammers at 3:1 later is mostly wrong.
Buy another galleon or two from England.
No more specialists after CC's last ones for the GMerchant
  • CC finish last spy, finish rush last GMerchant by one turn by starving lots, stop specialists, work hammers tiles and draft
  • FH finish musket, treb, consider max food for more drafting?
  • SM treb treb, draft this turn?

  • Hittite finish musket, barracks. Try to get a worker chopping soon.

  • Haithabu treb, run artists if it will get border pop earlier, draft from T255
  • Jelling treb, don't run artists
  • Bjorg treb, don't run artists
  • Moscow ?
  • Yakutsk treb, run artist if it will get access to sheep faster
  • Settle gems city - buy it a workboat from somewhere nearby. Worker clears jungle and mines other gems. Pity it didn't land on the other gems tile.

Pillage stuff as opportunities present.

GG goes to Viking land and looks for a good chance to give a bunch of XP to a handful of trebs to get some CR3 trebs.

Russian War
  • Moscow stack bunker down. Save last upgrades until we know we need them, but get a medic.
  • Units on galleon at 6 chain towards Moscow.
  • Units on galleon at 1 chain towards Russian mainland. Consider landing future forces to take Novgorod (perhaps with support from Moscow), then move on to Rostov and WvO. Will depend if Cathy mounts a counter-attack on Moscow.
  • Other galleons at 6 head to 1 to load units (1 should be inside our culture to minimize unit maintenance, future galleon chain sites should prefer to be in ocean lest some combination of caravels and galleys get lucky on a coast - Ron points out we have Frigate support, but not near Yaroslavl, which is the part I'm slightly worried about)
  • Yakutsk stack take Vladivostok and then head overland to Yaroslavl. Hopefully a worker can contribute a road.

Viking War
  • Reinforce units on Madrid - strip units from Haithabu, Jelling and take the musket on land and the musket on galleon SW of Jelling to help. Don't worry about healing - the last unit or two won't need full health. Detail a boat to scout Izzy's coastline.
  • Land and take Bjorgvin ASAP - suspect the CR3 maces should be helping here. Then, reassemble these forces for naval landing SW of Smolensk and rampage along Cathy's southern border. Send frigates in advance. This stack will then head for Joao.
  • Strip Nidaros defender when it isn't needed for happiness.

Dutch War
I want to plan this for after Cathy is just about dead, using (some of) the units that were attacking her. This allows us to focus the units that are left/built on the Viking lands to start picking off Izzy without needing two stages of boat transport for them.

Portuguese War
Perhaps towards the end of my set, judge when to start marshalling units to hit Joao (via Hittite and peninsula south of Hastings), according to progress in Russia. Some of the units from attacking Cathy are probably superfluous for killing WvO and should be sent to whoever of Joao and Izzy needs it.

Reinforcements from home islands
  • We have six units on galleons south of CC. They could either head for WvO and walk overland to help with Russia, or head for Roskilde Nidaros, land, walk overland and perhaps get picked up from Bjorgvin later by the galleons that will be doing the landing on Smolensk. Not sure which is best - the latter needs less ongoing galleon support. Worker(s) should build roads to Roskilde and NE of it, because this is also a likely vector for units attacking Izzy later.

Does Madrid have any Religious Shrines? Ie, might it be valuable to keep for that reason?

Not sure we want to raze Madrid, it is coastal, and makes a jump off point for attacking Isabella.

Madrid did found buddhism but it doesn't have the shrine.

While it is coastal it is only 2 pop, and while it will have trade routes it will lose money for us. The maintenance will be higher than the trade routes and a merchant could make most likely. We are already at the maximum cost for number of cities however. And it won't cost money to maintain during its revolt, so it is reasonable to keep just so our units heal a bit faster. It looks like Izzy is mostly coastal so its value as a jump off point is limited I think.

Price to insight revolt went up 200 points with DoW.
DoW = closed borders = more costly espionage missions
yes that would have been something we should have thought of more deeply. Another reason to get a spy to the city a turn earlier than you expect the to do the revolt. Since with the spy there you can get a detailed break down of the costs.

War plans... Willem is still pretty small isn't he? Can't we send the Ragnar troops + some extras to take him out next. It might slow us down finishing Cathy, but once we have her Great Lighthouse we could just camp for a little while.

I would rather set Willem up with our numerous spies and give them time to get their discounts and wipe out cathy. We have significant happiness issues that will get worse if we take on another opponent. Things will improve with ragnar's elimination, but we took a lot of losses taking moscow so the war weariness for Cathy is high and will be getting higher as we sacrifice more trebs on her longbows.

The troops from Ragnar can just as easily hit Cathy's Southern cities near willem rather than willem himself.

re: Madrid
Not sure we need that many there, but maybe. Also, was planning on getting units there mostly with the 2 galleons already in the area.
Yes there are some units but Ragnar has 6 units in Madrid, so I would much rather attack with the 4 trebs and 3 musketeers with more musketeers in support from boats rather than attack him over 2 turns. 4 trebs will reduce nearly all of the units for easy pickings. If the 3 musketeers get heavily wounded though without support they could be stopped or delayed.

Some already on Hittite Island, and a stack available to be picked up this turn also. There is already 1 galleon on the water that can chain this turn and land in Moscow or elswhere next turn
This stack and the reinforcements on English land is taking the north and west. We need units for the south and east.

Who cares any more?

If maintenance gets too crazy or if unhappiness gets insane we can consider a switch to police state and slavery. The value of Universal suffrage is limited now that we are losing money at 0% research.

GH worker (so the unhappy people aren't eating)
with the gems happiness this turn GH won't be too bad. But its seems more than 1 unhappy person does eat something.

Uppsala finish treb, don't run artists(?), draft from T255
no need for artists with ragnar's impending death.

decent place to buy a treb if we get a great merchant. What is the revolt at... hmm maybe too long in revolt to be useful.

Settle gems city - buy it a workboat from somewhere nearby. Worker clears jungle and mines other gems. Pity it didn't land on the other gems tile.

I highly doubt the cost of buying a workboat is worth it. I think part of treb is much more likely to help us win the game faster than a workboat for this

Moscow stack bunker down. Save last upgrades until we know we need them.
you want at least 1 medic I think. I don't there is one yet.

Bring spies from Nidaros to do some work in Russia.

I think it makes more sense to move our spies to Willem, let them get set up so Willem falls fast.

Maybe 1 spy goes to russia, but I doubt he will get there in time to anything more than look around.

walking through Ragnar lands sounds like a good course. I think we assess if we can split some of these off to support units taking Madrid to finish off izzy.

I think Izzy could start very soon. If units finish with izzy they can carry on to joao or swing back to Willem.

Pity it didn't land on the other gems tile.
Yea my mistake there, sorry.

you want at least 1 medic I think. I don't there is one yet.
There are 2 muskets that have a medic promo available. I didn't promote anything medic last turn because everything moved that turn, so no benefit to be gained.

If maintenance gets too crazy or if unhappiness gets insane we can consider a switch to police state and slavery. The value of Universal suffrage is limited now that we are losing money at 0% research.
Capture gold still allows us to buy units. Also, many of the newly captured cities aren't even producing yet. With just a few specialist changes and 3 cities building wealth we can be +15g/t before the planting of Gem city. I think our finances are still manageable. See Screenshots

so Ron what espionage mission did you do?
Counter espionage.

1 should be inside our culture to minimize unit maintenance,
Yes for sure, I just number the rows to make chaining easy....as for
future galleon chain sites should prefer to be in ocean lest some combination of caravels and galleys get lucky on a coast
Are you sure the defensive bonus from a coast tile is not better for us long term? We have Frigate support, the Caravels and Galleys from Moscow headed NE away from our reinforcements.

Espionage
Stop EPs on Cathy.
Start EPs on WvO for revolts.
This was done T250 when things went sideways with Cathy. We have full visibility of Willem's cities already, and can see 17 ground troops, including 1 cat, 10LB, 2Mace, 2Axe, 1 XBow, 1 Pike

New units coming from England....

The city west of Moscow on has 2 LB's and 1 Cat. I would land that first galleon load to the east of the city. You might be able to take it in 2-3 turns with support from the units in Moscow now.

If maintenance gets too crazy or if unhappiness gets insane we can consider a switch to police state and slavery. The value of Universal suffrage is limited now that we are losing money at 0% research.

I wasn't suggesting an immediate switch. Yes I agree that the finances are not at the breaking point, and yes US is still useful especially if we get the Great Merchant. I was just pointing out that a revolt was something that is an option at least.

Don't forget to take every pillage opportunity, for example the units next to madrid can likely pillage while they wait for reinforcements.

More leisurely comments about city builds...

CC finish last spy, finish last GMerchant, stop specialists, work hammers tiles and draft
you could consider running all merchants and starving it down 2 pop to get the Great Merchant a turn earlier. This probably is worth it. Getting the merchant and the gold earlier could make a significant impact on stack readiness near the front.
FH finish musket, treb
You could consider max food here. It would grow to 6 by T258 I believe and you could draft to get the musketeer a turn late and another musketeer built a few turns later or you could build the musketeer to be ready by T257. Assuming you don't have other more useful draftable cities by T258

SM treb treb
draftable I believe this turn, not a convenient location though
PC galleon
I understand the argument against building wealth, but here I don't think it is a bad idea.
MC trebs
I would switch to the marble and lose a bit more food per turn
BF finish galleon
also a potential non-convenient draft possibility
FC finish galleon
If you max food here you could get a draft in 6 or 7 turns I believe
GH worker (so the unhappy people aren't eating)
I don't think this works when the city is losing food with multiple unhappy, might as well build wealth.
SR finish musket, treb
I missed this, it has an unfinished musket?
London work max food, finish galleon, keep drafting every turn
Nottingham finish glleon
might want to switch to coast so you can draft it eventually. Certainly want a grass workshop instead of a grass mine. if you don't switch to coast
York treb
with gems this will look better, but I think you probably want max hammers her even if you are still starving after the gems.
Silver Lode treb, draft soon
Hastings many trebs
With its growth soon, the unhappiness from not having a MP might increase. Might want to divert a drafted musketeer here especially if one is just waiting for transport
Canterbury work farms to get into drafting mode, then hammers tiles
Hittite finish musket, barracks. Try to get a worker chopping soon.
Will the barracks really matter if the game is going to finish in 20 turns? I think we chop out a treb here instead.
Nidaros finish treb, treb, draft from T255
I assume you are finishing the chops or are you diverting the workers to roads?
Uppsala finish treb, don't run artists(?), draft from T255
take a tile from Uppsala I think instead of the non-lighthouse coast
Haithabu treb, run artists if it will get border pop earlier, draft from T255
Jelling treb, don't run artists
I guess you can buy a treb here
Bjorg treb, don't run artists
Moscow ?
Yakutsk treb, run artist if it will get access to sheep faster
Settle gems city - buy it a workboat from somewhere nearby. Worker clears jungle and mines other gems. Pity it didn't land on the other gems tile.
as I said I doubt the workboat will be useful in the last 20 turns of the game

And you missed the most important city!!! ....

BC's mistake, builds wealth :) Unless you want to buy that privateer for fun's sake.
the privateer... hmm might be able to slow willem's research of astronomy by 1 turn. could pillage his crab and 2 clams but looks like it could only get 1 city in its blockade. It might make 30-40 gold before it gets killed by a meaty galleon from Willem. Conceivably it could kill a galley before it becomes a meaty galleon, but seems unlikely.
Probably not worth the ~200 gold to build. In 14 turns it will be useless I think. I think in 14 turns we will be at war with Willem and so it couldn't blockade for gold

conceivably could build a treb and buy a treb here if you think a galleon is going by this way. Probably a frigate purchased with the Great Merchant's gold would be best here.

We have six units on galleons south of CC. They could either head for WvO and walk overland to help with Russia, or head for Roskilde, land, walk overland and perhaps get picked up from Bjorgvin later by the galleons that will be doing the landing on Smolensk. Not sure which is best - the latter needs less ongoing galleon support. Worker(s) should build roads to Roskilde and NE of it, because this is also a likely vector for units attacking Izzy later.

why not just go a bit further and land in Nidaros, then you can use the workers to chop forests or perhaps build a useful fort somewhere. You will have some galleons to galleon chain with in this area if you send reinforcements to Madrid.

possible plan for the GG.

this turn it should be possible to get the GG into Nidaros.

Then he walks to 1NE of Haithaibu T253, loads onto a galleon to the SW on T254 and T255 lands in stack marshalling next to Madrid.

If you buy the treb in Nidaros this turn you should be able to land that treb in that stack as well for a GG attachment on T256.
you can dance the musketeers out of the way and give 5 treb 4 xp each. 2 of them have 3 xp already and the others would get to the 4 xp mark. with the 4 xp treb you could attack Madrid T256 and weaken the units so the 7/8 xp treb could get to the 8/8 xp mark with their hopefully successful attacks.

You could still attack T256 (which is one turn later than what it truly possible and so this idea definitely has drawbacks). The musketeers that danced out of the way can still attack on T256. However this means Ragnar lives a turn longer than necessary which delays drafting in his cities and probably means +2 happiness at least in all of our cities.

bah bummer doesn't seem worth it.

another alternative
save the GG for a large stack of treb that we buy with Great Merchant gold is probably a better idea. Either give 2 xp to up to 10 treb with 3 or less xp, or give 5 xp to 4 treb with 3 xp already.

Of course we could make a super medic but with so many forces and stacks it seems less useful than spreading the xp out to some trebs.

1 treb that gets cr III drill II ? probably not...

Played. Save is here. Rag is dead, Cathy has one city left. Izzy is falling fast. Razed some cities, kept some. The economy is OK. Almost everything went to plan. I was going to play an extra turn to finish Cathy off to make the subsequent planning cleaner, but I misclicked on the spy that was going to be fully fortified for a revolt next turn to double-check we'd have enough EPs and poisoned her last city instead :-( Sorry. Fortunately, the city is largely bombed down and can probably be taken anyway, but I'll leave that to bc.

I think bc's set will take care of WvO and Izzy and make a start on Joao, but I think Ron's set will finish. We may like to take a careful look at whether it is possible to beat Xteam's last uploaded save.

Upload log was way too long to include in a post, so I have it saved in case of need.
