SGOTM 17 - Fifth Element

I have to agree with folket. Raze all unless it helps with airlift

First of all, switch to 100% science, so we can get to Flight ASAP. Then we will obviously want to get 4-5 airports. Build them in hammer rich cities so they are ready sooner.

Get 5 workers in a group so they can build Forts if needed to have a place for our airships.

From now on, we don't need any buildings, except airports. Cancel the Luxembourg Market. Set up at least 5 airports in our core cities so we can start airlifting. We don't need this many rifles now, they won't have time to get to the front by foot. And our airlift capacity will also be very low. If we build 5 airports, we can airlift 5 untis/turn maximum. Keep in mind that we need cities to airlift them to, only 1 guy can go to a city on any turn.

Keep 6-8 workers with main Japan stack so they can railroad. We don't really need other railroads in Sury lands, they are very far. The land in Japan is a labyrinth, we will need to move as fast as we can there. Even if we keep all the cities, our units still need to move a lot after the airlift, so railroads are more important there. Our research will be much faster than the speed at which we can finish off Japan.

I think it's not worth investing into GPP in Augsburg, without the GA it won't have a chance of finishing a GPP at 1800 cost in time. I'd rather see it working all its workshops and producing wealth. (Or a worker because need more workshops :D) This city is a good candidate for Airport and 1-turn paratroopers. We just need 6 more workshops in its BFC.

At Peter we have a lot of time, so no need to worry about that.

---------------
End of random rambling, main points:
- focus research on flight (100% slider). It is our key tech.
- get ~6-10 workers to the front lines to build railroads
- keep cities startegically. We need more cities to be able to airlift enough units, but less to stay under dom limit. Use forts to land airships.
- don't build any buildings except airports.

Some of these don't concern this mini-TS of course.

EDIT: Some Edits done. If a sentence didn't make sense, now it should :-)

Draft PPP, following your suggestions:

When i made the war plan on page 1 i estimated 90 turns from Fascism.
It was turn 194, now we're on 223, 29 turns after that plan and only 4 techs away.
Thinking to 20 turns is more than prudent.

Research: Comb > Flight, then AL > Fascism. After then, we can go for anything, maybe Electricity.

No, Shaan, i won't fire that market. I'm not building markets for gold, but for happiness.

Rifles can be at the front in no time with our railroad network and the galleon. About RRs, it won't be me, but someone else to take Japan, unless you ask me to do so. But, if i keep just 2 workers with the stack it will be more than enough. The other can follow, provided it's necessary. As you can see in the save, our 2 stacks are almost joined. Once we take Hangzhou they will move stacked, and the MP unit for the captured cities can be built anywhere in the south or chosen from the weaker units now stacked.
But don't worry, after the few ones i'm building i'll switch to whealth.

Nothing can resist to that stack, the less Toku's medieval units, the only problem is that we need to move one tile/turn, but we don't need to wait to heal with so many units, nor to lose one turn bombarding. We just bombard, attack, raze or keep and move. Under this aspect, the maze plays for us: we don't need more than 1 unit to protect the cities we keep.

And you're wrong about airports: it's correct for Japan, but Beijing, Guang, Yasoda can build one and receive all the airlift we can send. Then is a matter of 2 turns to arrive to Kyoto. Also forts can help, because they can receive units.

About what to keep and raze, i agree that all of Russia must be razed. It's too late now to benefit from that nice and well cottaged land and there aren't WW worth keeping. Instead, we can keep some more Jap city, to ease the units airlift.

I'll try to set up our GP cities to GM, hope in some luck.

I was forgetting: Qin stolen Steel from us and now Physics too. I don't understand how he can have so many EPPs.

Market: it doesn't really matter either way.

Agree on razing Russia. We need Japanese cities for airlifting.

Workers we need more of though than just 2. We can send reinforcments. By looking at Japan's territory, I can see that we need 30+ turns to move thorugh that with 1-movers. We need every single turn we can save on movement. Having the RR in place the minute we take a city means that we can move in paratroopers towards the end and take the next city in 1 or 2 turns, so we don't need to move the stack there. This could be used for the last Japanese cities. Could save us 4-5 turns overall.

After we get the Paratroopers, we won't really need more techs. Just airports and troppers so we can finish sooner. And get a shiny wooden spoon

Green light from me. We are about to bring this home.

Alright, China is gone and Japan have already tasted our iron. There were some units scattered in former china lands and the stack was in place. There're now >70 units in the chokepoint, ready to take Nagoya in 2 turns. From now on it's just a matter of logistics. I traded Edu+philo to Chur for MT... some cavalry can be of help. We don't need more units. Maybe some for Russia, but we can do well with the ones we have.

Moscow is razed, pity because it came well structured, with Academy, GS and GA settled... oh well. Our stack is at the doors of Yekater.

I built WS in Yasoda, AL is in next turn like the first airport. There're 17 being built, 5 in the south. The last are due in 6 turns.

No more Happy problems, for now.

Damn Qin made it to rifles and he popped 1 in his last city. So i killed an HA with a Knight, which was attacked by a cat and killed by the rifle... good, it was why i move it there. The rifle was then killed by one of ours.

Don't worry about RRs in Japan, we're plenty of workers just captured. But remember that we can build them only in the first tile of enemy culture.

Who is up next?

Great, I will do a PPP tonight then.

Do any units upgrade to paratroopers?

And I guess we can't draft them either?

Please shorten the lenght of your posts guys, i spend too much time reading

Maybe a couple cavalries for Russia can be of some help.

PPP
Get Fascism.
Then research towards industrialism at or below break even. I will not hesitate to use money to upgrade units if I feel like it.

Push hour armies hard. Aim to capture Kyoto ASAP. After that attacking Nara and Osaka in parallel, while building up an army of paratroopers. Build inf/cav until we have paratroopers. Split army in Russia to capture St Petersburga and Novogrod at the same time. Keep cities Kyoto, Osaka and Kagoshima in Japan. Raze everything else.

Production.
Finish airports then units everywhere.

I like it. Green light!

PPP(...)
Keep cities Kyoto, Osaka and Kagoshima in Japan. Raze everything else.
OK what did not quoted, yuo can even set research to 0 and use gold for upgrades.

Not much, because we'll disband the 80% of our present army once Jap and Rus fall. Even infantry can't be of much help, if not to garrison the few English cities we keep.
One unit per city, some for barb spawning and to repel possible barb attacks and a few to be airlifted after paras will conquer the first city.

But i disagree about the cities to keep:
- Tokyo for sure, because it's in the path to the others and will avoid barbs spawnings
- Satsuma, which is in the "paradrop area".

And remember that the more cities we keep, the more units we can airlift.
Remember also that we are razing Russia to keep more Jap and English cities. We do not have any problem of dom limit, so better keep.

On a last note, use the units in former China to pillage everything but roads, it's gold for free. And do the same in Russia and in the barb cities in that area.

We can also disband some workers, there're very few WSs to build in our core and in the south.

Keep more cities, razing Japanese cities only decreases our airlift potential.

Try to get paratroopers into the war as soon as you can.
Don't forget to railroad in Japanese land so we can get the airlifted units to the fornt lines quickly.

Are you comfortable with airlift micro? Always lift paratroopers if you have a choice. We will want to have 15+ paras on the front lines as soon as we can drop on England.

Southern workers are needed for railroads in Japan and maybe some forts too. Norhtern workers can be disbanded, but at this point money doesn't matter. Only logistics matters.
We will need forts next to the ice in some city's culture. We should airlfit a settler to some nearby city and build it next to the ice, and get one or two forts up in first ring so we can airlift faster. The japanese cities are too far away from the ice for paradrops. They will be in revolt for too long to be useful.

So the one at NE corner of ice, but raze the one directly E of ice. Settle a city there as close to the ice as possible, and build some forts for our arships and paras.

But this is long way down the road. First finish off the first half of Japan and Russia.

Oh. and green light ;)

Agreed. Just i don't understand this: can you plase post a noted screenie with what you mean?
