SGOTM 22 - Fifth Element

Yeah, really sorry to hear that. I know you had some rather tragic stuff going on during the last game too. I can hardly imagine what you're going through. Just know you have my deepest sympathies.

Sorry to hear your news. My condolences. Don't worry about this game, its only a game.

Sympathies

@enKage - Are you going to be able to play in the next day or two?

If not, I will take a turn today/tomorrow. We've been idle and/or slow for a long time, and I think we're going to have to start playing more freestyle so that we can go faster. TSR is all the way out to T180, so I think we can assume that we're going to end up playing past T200.

Ok, here's the general outline:

Cities

Keep Rome as is for 5 turns to get GS. Revolt to HR and start growing.

Grow Porcy to size 4 in 3 turns, then switch to Settler.

Finish Barracks in Equus and build chariots.

Tech

Stay at 0% for 5 turns. GS builds Academy, then 100% research for IW in 4 turns. I would expect Math to be next, but I will probably stop there.

Workers

Worker2 - Build Winery + Road, start farm near Rome

Worker1 - Finish Farm, move to Wine near Porcellus and build Winery

Worker3 - Finish Farm, chop into Equus, start Winery near Equus

Other

Trade Corn to Sal for Crab
Don't convert to a religion unless someone asks
Keep galleys exploring & attempt to get circumnav bonus

According to this plan we should have IW in 9 turns or less. We'll have a Settler on the way, and Rome will be growing. If we don't have Iron in our borders, I intend to have it ASAP.

P.S. I don't mean to completely take over the game, but I'm feeling some urgency to keep the game moving. I will play in about 24 hours if I don't hear any objections.

I think I am not able to play for at least a week. Not even have time to check the SG.

I am experiencing quite a big financial problem and am forced to take additional hours. It means that I am not even sure if I am able to take any single set at all till the end of competition. I feel really guilty leaving you for such a long time

EnKage, it sounds like you have more important things to deal with than a civ game.

It's unfortunate that so much of our team is unavailable, but it's all for compelling reasons. Hopefully, pigswill and I can trade off turns and keep the game going. If you reach a point where you feel like you can come back just let us know.

FYI
I did play, but my home Internet connection is down, so I can't upload the save yet. I can see only one source of Iron on the entire unfogged map, and it's in our southern wasteland. We have a Settler making his way there, but it will still be a couple of turns. We'll need to figure out the best city tile, and also what we're researching next. Math will be in next turn.

Besides what I mentioned earlier, it was notable that there was not a single barb attack over the last 11 turns!

Here's the screenshot for settling near Iron:

Sadly, there's no way to get Fish, Deer, Gems, and Iron. 3 out of 4 is the best you can do. The city cross that's shown is the best one I can come up with, but let me know if you would prefer a different one.

I'd put it 1E to get more coastal tiles.

Good that barbs are settling down.

A potential complication is that I'm going to Brazil on Friday (Dec 4) and won't be back until the end of February. We're staying with my mother in law, when I was last there I installed BTS, if she hasn't changed computer it will hopefully still be available but I won't know until I get there.

Wow, I hope that computer is still there. It does sound awfully nice going to Brazil all winter, though. I suppose if it comes down to it, I will just play the game through to the end.

I'll agree with moving 1E. I had been thinking that we would get the gems with the 2nd border pop, but that's a pretty long way off.

Oh, what about next tech?
Is currency worth it with only 4 cities? The other ones we need soon are CoL (to get to CS), construction, and calendar.

pigswill - I know you're in the midst of getting ready to travel, so I don't expect anything in the next couple days. Nonetheless, I think we need to chart an overall course for this game.

It still seems pretty obvious that conquest is the way to go. Nothing we've found would suggest that Space would be anywhere near competitive. So the questions that remain are these:

1. When do we start the slaughter?

I would say we start as soon as we can build 7-8 Praets and a couple Cats.

2. Where do we start the slaughter?

I'm really not sure yet. Maybe Saladin. I'd rather not let him get Camel Archers.

3. What's the last tech we need?

I think we could conceivably wipe them out with Cuirs. We might have to go to Rifling for Cavalry.

4. What about the 7 Wonders?

Rome is going to have to build Wonders and not very many units. We'll probably also have to divert research once in a while to get access to new Wonders.

5. Can we maintain an army with an empire of 4 cities?

Doubtful. I think the thing to do is burn all the enemy cities except for the best one in each civ. The distance maintenance will be a little rough, but we'll need some outposts to heal and build a few reinforcements. Also, we should be able to work out a system where we stockpile new units in Rome, capture a city, and then send the units out once the requirement for gaining a new city is satisfied.

So, what's your take on these questions? Can you think of anything important that I didn't mention?

I reckon we research construction as our next tech. We need to keep growing Rome of course. If we're going to stick with prats then maybe we'll need engineering. Diverting to aesthetics/lit after construction might give us some wonders to build. Maybe start Rome on aquaduct/HG about now. It will need the health at some point anyway.

I´m in Brazil (:D) and have access to the game so could play a set if/when required.

Maybe its worth considering resource trades as we seem to have most of the world´s wine supply :).

edit:had a look at 75ad save. Hannibal has expanded to eight cities, he´s annoyed with us and claims he´s studying to kill us. Seems to be a likley first target. He´s also on the verge of capturing barb city north of Equus, maybe move a couple of chariots to see if we can take and raze it first.

Researching MC I see, Colossus perhaps? Cheap forges regardless.
