I ended up going with MC because I realized that one aspect I didn't address in my previous post is Great People. I want that Forge so that we can hopefully get a GE or two. I started building an aqueduct and I barely got a few turns into it before someone finished HG.

It seems to me that the AI are far more advanced than we expected them to be with no tech trading and aggressive AI. We may have to pick some of the less sought after Wonders. Unfortunately, I don't even know which ones the AI prioritize and which ones they let slide.

I think I made a trade with Brennus in hopes of improving relations, but the resource diplo bonus takes a pretty long time to kick in. Hannibal may very well be coming for us. His UU is a dangerous counter to ours, but I'm not sure if he has HBR yet. We'll have to watch for that and probably build a couple spears along with our Praets.

pigswill - I took a pretty long turnset in order to get us caught up a little. Feel free to take over at this point.

Downloaded, opened and saved 75ad save, moved a couple of chariots already so this is my Got It.

Shame about HG, maybe we´ll have more luck with Colossus. Let´s find out.

Not much of a plan:

Research MC, try Colossus in Rome.

Trade wine to Sal for rice, cancel corn for crab (Sal) for net gain of 3 health.

Build prats in Rome (pre MC), Porcy and Equus.

Ferry gets granary. LH, probably lib.

Capture/raze barb city north of Equus.

Play it by ear, post once I´ve got us into a big mess.

I would say use the first round of Praets to raze barb cities (both E of Porcy and N of Rome), so that we get them promoted to CR2. Also, it might be worth discussing the prospect of keeping the barb city N of Rome.

After MC, we need to decide between CS and Construction. It will largely depend on how long you think it will take to build up a stack of about 8 Praets. I think we should have Construction by the time that is done so that we can add Cats to the stack. I doubt there's enough time in between to research CS, but I could be wrong.

It hasn´t taken long to get us in a mess....

75ad. Trade wine to Sal for rice, cancel corn to Sal for crab (+3 net health).

100ad. Hani attacks Scythian, useless, doesn´t kill a single barb. Our first praetorian moves into place. Maybe next turn.
Research 100%, MC in 6.
Hani tells us to fear his numidian cavalry and has enough on his hands.

125ad. praetorian gets 5xp, lose 2 chariots, raze Scythian for 110g. Then I notice a small problem down South.

Ferry has archer and chariot, another chariot close by. Ferry due to grow next turn, might have enough time to whip an axe. Maybe we have enough to defend Ferry, probably won´t have enough if sword goes for iron instead.

Yeah, we probably need to switch to axe this turn. Then whip in two turns, just in time to prevent the mine from being pillaged.

My bad for not sending a chariot to fogbust that corner.

Couldn´t whip an axe in time so lost a chariot killing barb sword, the other chariot got promoted however and was able to kill the barb axe that turned up the following turn.

Apart from that explored a bit more.

Brennus told us to stop trading with Zara, I refused so he won´t be happy with us.

MC is in. Starting construction. We´ve got 5 prats, building a couple more. Rome has started on forge.

We´re getting boxed in, hopefully won´t get many more barbs down South.

Here´s the save: http://gotm.civfanatics.net/download.php?file=Fifth_Element_SG022_AD0250_01.CivBeyondSwordSave

We´re getting boxed in,

On the one hand it means a lot more cities to conquer, but on the other hand it means more capture gold and maybe roads that the AI builds for us. Moving an army across all that empty land was going to be painful, but now it's a non-issue.

I see Saladin has LBs. Considering he's also Protective, I don't think we'll be starting there. It will have to be either Hannibal or Brennus. Hannibal is probably already planning to DoW us, and I would hate to get attacked while our stack is off killing Brennus.

Also, watch out for the barb galley that just showed up near Equus. It's chasing a WB, but it might decide to pillage our fish nets.

Hannibal or Brennus are certainly our first opponents. Its likely imho that they´ll attack us before we attack them.

I´m wondering about going for CS before construction, Equus and Porcy can keep building prats while Rome builds Colossus. Bureacracy sounds a pretty nifty civic in this set up.

I agree very much on the importance of Bureaucracy. I thought it would be best to start attacking sooner, but really it's a coin flip in my mind. Bureau will give us the economic strength to support a larger army.

The only thing I don't like is the idea of waiting to be attacked. Praets should have CR promotions, but that doesn't help us unless we're on the offensive.

Its not that I want to delay attacking, its more that I think we´re likely to be attacked before we´re ready. In this situation I´d rather have prats than cats facing a stack.

Well, let's continue on and see if the DoW comes. Keep building Praets and keep population up so that we can whip in an emergency. Revolt into Bureau as soon as possible.

Sounds like a plan!

Played six turns up to 400ad. Brennus has just declared on us. Details and screenshots to follow, probably tomorrow.

I opened up the 400 AD save.

How confident are you about Equus surviving the end of the turn? I'm only about 80% sure that we'll make it. I guess there's nothing to be done about that that hasn't already been done, so we'll see how good or bad our luck is. :please:

I see Hannibal does in fact have Numidian Cavs. Dang. With the Elephants coming from Brennus, we're definitely going to want some spears as city and stack defenders. Probably whip one in Equus next turn.

Brennus´stack consists of 4 GW, spear, axe, cat, archer with a couple of Wellies nearby. Equus will complete prat ibt for an extra defender.

Let´s just hit return and see what happens.

edit: I´d rather whip a wall than a spear.

Hit return.....

Equus defence goes up to 40% then down to 32% after bombardment. That´s it. Major non-event. Brennus is moving reinforcements. We´re moving reinforcements.

Darius is now Hannibal´s worst enemy.

One minor annoyance is that I moved 5 prats to barb village north of Rome, when I got there Darius had already captured it. Prats are slowly heading back east.

Cancelled deer for pigs (we now have deer). Traded wine to Zara for 5gpt.

Rome has finished forge, starting Collossus (11 turns). CS in 12.
