SGOTM 22 - Fifth Element

Im kind of curious as to why we haven´t gone for engineering yet.

Having said that I really can´t see us winning this game. Even space is going to be difficult when we have to research everything ourselves (assuming we survive that long). Maybe abandon Verlamion as a lost cause (it still beats giving Equus). Get peace and internet beeline long term but I´m still not convinced. I have no idea how we´re going to get our seven Wonders in Rome given how far behind we are.

Well that may have been the best advice - we survived one turn but at a horrendous cost. We have 5 defenders left (including 2 GGs), Brennus has 20 (!) troops ready to attack next turn and isn't interested in peace at any cost. I will withdraw our remaining troops to Equus and we can consolidate there. I did have reinforcements on the way but they won't be anywhere near enough.

We're about to lose our fishing nets near Ferraria as I moved our Trireme away - I normally play without Barbs so didn't realise what I had done in time.

Adopting a religion may be our only hope - but it's a slim one as our 3 neighbours have different ones!

The only sliver of hope I can offer is both Sal and Zara are in Fist mode, and they both have Brennus as worst enemy. I'm about 80% sure neither of them will do a damn thing, but maybe they will.

In the meantime, it seems we have no choice but to abandon Verlamion and regroup in Equus. I am really f-ing glad we build that city on a hill. Even so, the Trebs coming out of Celtia now are bad news.

Build more Crossbows. Give all defensive promotions.

Pull one of our CR-promoted maces back and send him toward the barb city in the south. We need to raze that if we're going to build one near Stone/Fish (and we may as well).

Sadly, we are 8 Techs away from having Cuirs. (9 counting Paper)
I say get through (bulb & research) Education to get to Gunpowder ASAP. If we survive that long, the combo of Muskets and XBows should get us through the rest.

So the good news, the bad news and the awful news:-

Good - we survived the siege of Equus thanks to CG2 Crossbowmen and C1 Macemen, no sign of any reinforcements from Brennus.

Bad - we lost our fishing nets again - this time to a Brennus Trireme.

The awful news - Hannibal just declared on us and is marching a small stack (including some Knights) towards Equus. :wallbash:

We are two eight turns away from Gunpowder.

Darius has some HAs near the Barb city in the South - hopefully he will just raze it. I was thinking we could get 2 cities down there - one 1W of the Gems, would just have two farms for the food but that would be enough to work the Gems.

We have yet another GG - any suggestions? Perhaps settle in Porcy, getting CG2 defenders out the gate is really helpful (as is Equus being on a hill as zbg pointed out).

Ok, go ahead with Hinduism. I'm not entirely sure it will work, but it's worth trying.

I am assuming that we won't be able to win the space race unless we expand via conquest. I'm hoping we can at least get to 10 cities, although we need more health in Rome if we're going to reach size 20.

Pigswill is definitely on the right track with the beeline toward Internet. I think we need Rifling in order to beat back Hannibal and take some decent cities. Not sure if that's on the beeline. I don't really think it is.
 
Well, I'm not holding out much hope for fulfilling the Wonder requirement anyway. Winning while sticking to the other requirements will be hard enough.
 
OK played up to Gunpowder and it went basically fine - wave after wave of enemy troops dashing themselves against the hilly walls of Equus :D

We are now Buddhists (not Hindu!), Saladin is pleased with us - not much help but we got Crab from him for nothing as well as Cow from Gilgamesh so Rome is fully healthy at size 15 now.

Brennus' Trireme near Ferraria has been sunk and we have the fish netted again.

The barb city of Khosian near Ferraria has been razed to the ground.

Civs are starting to adopt Emancipation, together with War Weariness happiness will become an issue soon.

So time to think again - about techs and strategy.

1) pigswill was keen to go to Engineering, zbg mentioned a beeline to MT and also possibly Gunpowder.

2) We should build some Musketmen but how many and can we afford to stop building troops in Rome and/or Porcy and get at least one University up given how much teching we have to do?

3) What about our next GP? Do we want to start running a scientist anywhere? Perhaps a Merchant with a view to building HAs ready to upgrade??

Now that we have Muskets available, I see no need to go back and get Pikes. I also don't think castles will help because they have more than enough siege to bombard us down to zero.

I still like the beeline Mil Trad.

For great people, I really wanted an Engineer, but that's not really practical. GM would be my next choice.

I say knock out one Musket each in Rome and Porcy then start Uni's. We haven't had too many losses, so Equus can pretty much handle it's own defense.
 
Oh, and I can't see getting Emancipation for a long, long time. I guess lots of units is our only answer to unhappiness. That and hopefully ending these stupid wars someday.
 
I pretty much agreed with zbg so have played up until Nationalism, with MT about 13 turns away. Stopped as we need to decide whether or not we want to switch to Nationhood (Draft 3 units per turn and extra happiness from Barracks). The units from Brennus and Hannibal have been relentless and they are chipping away at Equus, got the two universities built but back to Musketmans hoping to hang on to Cuirs. Lots of sabotage going on again but we really need Cuirs to protect Workers to restore things. Edit: Cuirs might not be enough though as Hannibal has Cavalry now.

Best news is Saladin declared on Hannibal - no sign of any action yet but it seems to have frozen one of Hannibal's stacks near Equus.
