SGOTM 22 - Fifth Element

Hmm... didn't notice before that AI's start with Priesthood. I guess Oracle is out.

I'm not sure about going for the coast. We lose at least two turns; more if there turns out to be no seafood.

I agree that 1N looks like the best spot for our cap. We will need lots of food and lots of production and that has both. As for VC, I think a Corp drive space VC is the best shot we have for a win. Unless we can quickly find and kill all the other AI except for 1 and limit them to 1 useless city by the time we have all the wonders we need, it will be difficult to get the conquest VC. Our growth will be slow and we will have a limited number of cities due to the conditions set. This means that we either need to focus on early building of a large army to kill almost everyone or focus on growth so that we can protect ourselves and build all the wonders we need.

Are you sure space can be faster than conquest, especially with cities limited to around 10?

Settling 1N probably delayes 2nd city (teching to pottery + 60H into granary - no whips here! If we go BW we will gamble to have copper in BFC or horses!). AH+wheel+pottery vs AH+sailing, than 60h vs 30h. For the price of 4 food from banana, which will not be used until calendar. Only 5 coastal is imo little price for acces to sea.

Because it is raging barbs, settling 2nd city for horses is IMO our first task. Generally speaking we can go Bronze AFTER settling 2nd city (unless we go for early archery)

We are to consider vs stronger mainly commerce pottential vs faster start

Anybody willing to make a test game?

If you dont risk you never know :P We will see them after warriors move on t1

1N:
settle t0
worker faster
later 2nd city unless we go misticism first
Note also that jungle 3Nof settler is riverside

coastal:
settle t1 or the latest t2
worker slightly later (5 turns of 2yield tile = -5 hammers to worker)
can easiy skip mistycism for a long time and take more useful sailing instead
-4 food (from banana
5 coast (in 1N option it will be 1 mountain, 1 riverside hill and 2 grasses and 1 riverside grass)
probably 1 more forest.

Note
ANY single seafood makes coastal more better in terms of food, even claims

In the beginning, while both banana and wine are not available it really doesnt make a big difference imo. Because we will run probably beauro all the time with limited empire, there is a difference in commerce. If we are more into spacerace, 1N is favourable (though i dont like starting with monument). If we think there is no obstacle that can stop us from conquering the world, I will shot for coastal (it also adds 1 more wonder possible)

Just a weekend homework.

Play monarch space game with cities limited to 10. Post the date

In fact there are 2 seaacces sites.

1S2W from pigs --> 1 forest in the fog, 5 coast, 1 unknown (clear grassland?)

2S1W from pigs --> loses 2 wines, but have 3 landtiles in the fog, 1 is forest, 1 probably mountain, 1 unknown.

Of course I talk about 1S2W from pig.

Just to make sure
Stonehenge counts as 2 buildings, right? (wonder +monument)

It seems the perfect announcement post is something I will never be able to do...

It was missing another tiny detail again:

No tech trading or brokering

This will be posted in each team thread now.

So it looks like space is closed, as AIs will never reach rienessaince ?

Just to be clear, that's the game option that prevents all civs from tech trading, right? It could possibly also be interpreted as a rule that only applies to the player (like the rules about number of cities).

Hmm.. BSPollux has always said he wants to present us with strategic choices, so I'm wondering why he would push us so hard toward conquest. I can only guess that conquest will be almost as difficult as space.

It's a fair point but I'm struggling to see the choice at the moment, I guess the last AI could be virtually inaccessible or something.

Having a few problems: in an attempt to get vanilla working again I've deleted all my civ games and my primitive PC running Vista is being a major haemorrhoid about reinstalling.

It does seem odd that conquest is the only realistic victory condition.
