need to make special mention in some spoiler that the unrequired tech gambit didn't pay off whatso-freaking-ever.

regarding commie....
i have played a few c3c games where just about every city under commie was producing a worthwhile number of sheilds. what's the optimal number for this size map w/ the fp and secret squirrel hq?

what you need is to MM your republic better, boost science and kick AIs butts.

AIs will fall way behind in techs in IAs if you manage to do your research quickly.

I think the plan was more to stay in Republic until we research Advanced Flight, then go commie for the actual butt-kicking. Which seems sensible enough to me, as communism will probably boost production in our Chinese and Greek provinces quite a bit.

Yes, that's been my experience as well. I was just a little disturbed because they seemed to be starting to pull away during my turns (and the fact that I was an idiot and went for Metallurgy instead of Physics didn't help matters any). But I think we'll be OK.
