SGOTM8 - klarius

Hmm, so Lugdunum had a larger garrison even than Rome. Good judgement on my part leaving that attack to you. :D

Failed to airlift settler to Scandinavia because so many airfields had been used.

Settlers can't be airlifted anyway. If we want one in Oslo we'll have to merge in workers and rush.

Now that we're at peace with China, we might want to look into Tientsin to learn the size of the garrison. It should be cheap, and then we can start working out in detail how we're going to have enough veteran infantry in 1130. It's possible that we'll want to change some builds to inf before hitting Enter.

I am back from my trip to Eastern Europe.

@ Northern Pike: Nice turns
@ Megalou: Lead us to victory. Have enough infantry and helis ready for Tientsin to wipe them out in the first turn! We can also use our bombers to redline all defenders. Even paratroopers should be able to kill a redlined spearman.

Thanks, guys, as always.

Just one thing, Ronald: the spoiler 1. If you don't have time to write it, simply say so and I'll do it. I think we should get it posted soon.

Looks nice so far.

BTW, it was to be expected to meet a lot units in Lugdunum. The units from the extorted cities teleported there.

If there are workers and airlift capacity to spare, I would recommend to build a railway in scandinavia at least up to Birka. But every railroad tile should then have an unit on it so it cannot be blocked by the Vikings.

I'll be interested to see if this is possible. I tried to rail a Roman-controlled tile while we had that RoP and I couldn't do it.

Megalou, did you test your empty army airlift theory?
I'm pretty sure it doesn't work (the airlift thing is a flag on the army unit), but there's no harm trying it.
The leader can anyways not do anything useful except rushing a bomber or other unit. This can then still be done by disbanding the army.
But we should have the ability to generate leaders in scandinavia - so get rid of the leader by then. An army during the RoP rape can be used to get some more attacks out of cavs that already attacked.

@NP
I don't know what your problem was  . Did you have access to iron and coal at that tile ?
I did build a railroad in roman land to circle around a blocked tile.

Edit:
And also note you cannot build railroads in Scandinavia after you declare, unless you rush or capture a harbor. Coal is currently coming there through a Viking harbor.

I believe so, unless some extreme subtlety is involved here. Is it access to one's own iron and coal that matters in that situation, or access to the RoP partner's? :hmm:

AFAIK, you need a trade route to your own resources. You can use harbors and roads of anybody you are at peace for that.

Sorry, I just came back from a business trip. I will write it this evening.

Megalou, did you test your empty army airlift theory?
I'm afraid I did. I should have trusted your spontaneous answer. The leader is likely to be worthless. I considered taking him to an airport but it will take so long that I think I'll just hurry something with him. Edit: In addition, if they can't be airlifted from airfields there is no reason to believe they can be airlifted from airports.

Good point! I started to think about it after I had shut down yesterday. I may still be able to airlift a small number of workers.

Here is a draft of spoiler 1:

Before we answer your questions a short timeline of events:

First decision we made was about the starting location. After some discussion we went for the desert tile. It has the disadvantage to loose the lambs for the first ten turns, but the advantage of a 4 turn settler factory.

This shows our preliminary city planning

klarius_sg8_3.jpg

And this the situation in 1000 BC:

klarius_sg8_41.jpg

We enter MA in 730 BC and get contact with everybody in 330 BC:

klarius_sg8_5.jpg

And now some answers to your questions:

1) Which civs were strongest and how will you deal with them?
Rome, Scandinavia and Greece were the strongest civs
Greece is on our continent and we will deal with them after the Chinese.
For Rome and Scandinavia we will try to get a foothold on their continents via phony wars

2) How did you balance research vs. growth vs. military production
Max. research and growth with minimal military

3) What influence did the barbs or disease have on your progress?
Barbs: very minimal influence, the barbs in the SE had very good RNG luck, so it took a while before we could connect the luxury
Disease: no influence

4) How did the distribution of horses and iron affect your planning?
It delayed our war with China untill we had longbowmen. We built two cities, St. Loius and San Antonio, between Chineese cities to get as close as possible to Shanghai, the city with the horses.

5) How do you plan to visit your offshore friends?
Phony wars to extract cities on their continents/islands

6) What was your research approach?
Initially we went for the republic slingshot. This worked fine, we became a republic in 1350 BC. Then Literature, currency, polytheism.
Greece and Rome should fund our full speed research. Early libraries and universities.

7) Early plans to win the game?
We had heated discussions whether we will need advanced flight or flight only.

Please give me your comments. I will post the spoiler tomorrow.

Ronald

I like the spoiler. Perhaps something about our corridor to China can be of interest. I recall a lurker comment about it. But maybe it was Middle Ages.

I'll play a little now, but I'm not sure I'll finish because I have work to do.

I will add a few words.

..... :( .....

Edit:

1090 AD - (Continued) I'm sure we'll have money enough to rush without full lumberjacking, so I send some workers down to Oslo.

Change some scientists to engineers in the areas prebuilding helicopters.

Plant/chop one tile S of Baltimore.

Airlift 9 workers to near Oslo.

IT:
Nothing special. All core cities which finish units start infantries.

1100 AD - Railroad westwards through Scandinavia. All healthy units are moved westward onto hills (in case Scandinavia declares during the interturn.) All wounded units are moved into Oslo.

The top Scandinavian defenders are all regular units. 4 are riflemen, 4 are musketmen.

Spearman in Marathon attacks barb horseman, 0-1. Vet cavalry attacks the same barb, 1-1.

A strange General Washington makes an army and disbands it to hurry a vet tank in Seleucia.

We move the 9 cavs and 1 rifleman to Mycenaes doorstep and declare war. But first we sell The Corporation for 67 gold.

Elite cavalry beats reg hoplite (2-1). Vet cavalry beats reg hoplite (3-1). Vet cavalry beats reg hoplite (4-1). Vet cavalry beats reg hoplite (5-1). Vet cavalry beats reg hoplite (6-1). Vet cavalry beats reg hoplite (7-1). Vet cavalry beats reg hoplite (8-1) and Greece is no more. Five relatively healthy cavs are airlifted to near Oslo.

Remobilize.

Settler takes a look at Tientsin.

Another chop is made for Baltimore. Next stop is Denver.

Rebase bombers to Oslo.

Most workers in Ex-Rome are airlifted to the continent or to near Oslo. A small number is kept as scouts in the reazed areas, one to block an AI settler target.

6 tanks & 13 cavalries (total) are airlifted to near Oslo, not all healthy ones.

Another vet musketman is airlifted back home.

1110 AD - Destroy a barb camp in old Rome.

Position troops in Scandinavia.

closeupv.jpg

Trade Corporation to Vikings for 45 gold.

Declare.

Bombing run manages to injure all riflemen within reach.

Vikings destroyed.

afterv.jpg

Not one unit is lost, although one has retreated. Airlift infantry and 3 tanks home. plus some cavs.

We have one leader, who makes an army and disbands to hurry an infantry unit.

Disband a tank in Denver.

Do some chopping around Pitsburgh.

Tientsin is still size 2. We are now 206 tiles from domination limit.

IT: Quell all resistance in Scandinavia.

1120 AD - Move Bombers to near Tientsin.

Disband some tanks and cavalries in Pitsburgh and Denver. (Sorry NP, Better Late Than Never had to go.) Plus one cavalry in Washington.

Four choppers should be ready on the interturn without hurrying.

Upgrad our two vet muskets to infantry.

Disband some troops in Scandinavia for marketplaces. For the sake of fairness, It's Early Pension For Me was among them.

Remobilized. Ah! So no marketplaces!

Shortrush some infantries. (Some can be changed to paratroopers.)

Airlift some tanks from Scandinavia.

IT: Advanced Flight. I forgot that engineers can't aid in construction of units, so I sell some barracks on the interturn.

Airport in Pittsburgh
4 choppers
6 paratroopers
Some infantries

1130 AD - Land 6 paratroopers, 12 infantries you know where.

tientsinchopper.jpg

1140 AD - Examin Tientsin: 5 spearmen.

And here comes the overkill...

The long and short of it in 1140-1150 AD:

morefriends.jpg

And finally some marketplaces.

Well done everyone! It's been very nice to play with you guys!

Here is the penultimate save if you want to check out the end game screens: It takes about 10 minutes to go through the replay...

Very well done, but why didn't we make some more friends?

Looks like we have won. It was great playing with you guys.

Since we have finished the game, are we now allowed to read threads of other teams?

Yes, you can read the other threads. And also post to tease them a bit if you want. :D

Looks like we managed a fine performance, which will not be easy to beat :crazyeye:

Congratulations everybody. :hatsoff:
