This is a distraction. Our money should be going into research. The ONLY priority now is to get to helis ASAP.

I agree we should not digress from max science as helis will allow easy taking of backward islands quite quickly. However currently we are making sig gpt at 100% science so can afford some expenditure.
Not rushing anything on this island risks a repeat of the viking situation (was no great loss but hard to accept giving away cities to aggresive AI  ).
I have no strong feelings re buying a small army to take Greek isle - if we decide not to I dont think we lose much, if we do decide to take out Greece I believe we should make it quick and decisive.
I confess to fence sitting so leave the decision up to others :D

Edit - given how little resistance Greek hoplites gave us on the main continent we may need only 6LBs and 6 trebs plus perhaps a couple of spears - we already have the 6LBs - the spears and trebs would cost only 848g more.

That's insanity. I had a feeling they would go really fast.

I disagree - its good play.

I suspect they focussed strongly on research throughout.

We progressed very well in terms of territory aquisition, however if you count the turns where we stopped research waiting for AI to research CoL, plus missing the Rep slingshot, plus delaying much too long to revolt to republic you can see how we might have researched many turns faster.

I look forward to reading their posts after we have finished.

If we are doing 4 turn research, I don't have a problem. If not, I think we should be buying settlers, not LBs.

We are currently 5 turn research - we have little room for more settlers (IIRC 7 will be built in next 9 turns - I think there remain 4 vacant spots the rest would require abandoning and changing position) - what will speed our research more however is railing the irr grass allowing us to support many more scientists.

Turnlog:

Preflight:
Change around specialists some.
Industrialization in 4.

760 AD:
MM

770 AD:
MM

780 AD:
Viking boat near 10 and Delphi looks threatening... move some dudes to there.

790 AD:
Got Industrialization (took 4).
Medicine in 4.
Change some Core builds to factories from banks.

800 AD:
Troops beginning to get into place to attack Greeks.

810 AD:
Don't remember, nothing important I think.

820 AD:
Newton's University completed in 01.
Trade Theory of Gravity to Rome for 131GPT + 10GP.

830 AD:
Got Medicine (took 4).
Electricity in 4. (This is taking basically every scientist we can possibly muster.)
Move troops--they will attack Ephesus next turn.
01 purchases factory so that it may begin a Hoover prebuild using Women's Sufferage.

840 AD:
Trade Metallurgy to Japanese for Ivory + 40GP
Capture Ephesus (1 archer took 1 damage)

850 AD:
Not too much... moved some troops and things.

For the next player:

Our luxury trade with Rome runs out next turn--so we'll lose 2 luxuries. MAKE SURE to trade for these again right away!!!

If we're careful with our scientists we should be able to maintain 4 turn research through electricity and Scientific Method.

05 will be ready for Theory of Evolution wonder once we get Scientific Method, we that'll pop us 2 free techs immediately.

01 is currently building Women's Sufferage as a prebuild for Hoover.

We have enough workers built... so I've changed our ICS region to mostly all knights (except for a stray city or two I was too lazy to hunt down ;)), but if you can think of something better to build, then be sure to take a look.

Core is currently building factories in preparation for completing Hoovers. At that point they'll be ideal for pumping out units.

Our war with Greece is going well, so you might as well finish them off completely over the next few turns.

Looking good - if we maintain 4 turn research I might not get another turn (given I will probably require skip next turn)

On, On to helis and world conquest.

Roster
Symphony D - post your got it and away you go
Own - are you avail next?

Edit
@ IstariAsuka - did Greeks dow us or did we break peace treaty?

I'm avail next, and I will play.

Edit: I would highly suggest steam power, that's another food per tile in the ICS region, which means tons more science. And more shields in the core.

We have steam power - it came in 740AD IT near the end of my turnset

Whoops.

Completely forgot that we had a new peace treaty with Greeks. :(

Well... maybe Rome will still be willing to trade luxs? If we toss in a tech? If not at least I got ivory from Japanese, 5 luxury I believe is enough to keep our core happy at 0 lux.

Yeah, sorry guys, knew I'd screw up somewhere.

Start
Pre game discussion centred on whether to max research or go for strats to get OS cities in peace deals and cash rush armies.
Pros and cons of Rep and Monarchy discussed
Majority decision favoured research at max using Republic

Initial Settle
Like others scout went S,S revealing 2 BGs so settled on desert for 4 turn factory.
Initial builds granary, archer, archer, warrior, settlers

Exploration
Scout then popped GH S,SW for a worker before heading north where popped WC, maps showing dyes and 25g before meeting Chinese and Greeks in2900BC

Barbs
Barb warrior appeared 3250BC threatening worker.
At this stage we had no military with 40 shields invested in granary.
Worker retreated and granary rushed (back to size 1).
Worker chopped to hasten archer.
Barb remained opn outskirts of Washington until removed by archer.
Further barbs killed 1 warrior and later sacked dye city for 29g

Techs
2900BC Trade CB + gpt for Alpha from China
1910BC Research writing -> Phil
1600BC Decision made to stop research hoping AI would research CoL allowing trade through Big Picture and Rep sling shot
1200BC Research Phil - no free tech (AI still not researched CoL) - trade for BW, Wheel, IW
1000BC Research CoL - trade for Myst & Math
530BC Research Rep (revolt delayed as war imminent)
450BC Research Polytheism - (trade MM, Constr & Currency at some time)
350BC Research HBR -> MA
10BC Trade for Feud

Other Civs
2900BC - scout contacts Chinese and Greeks
Both are going wonder mad
Eye off Chinese horses and Greek Iron - decide hoplites more difficult and horses closer so its Chinese first
510BC dow China allying Greeks, easily taking closer cities inc horses but first attempt at Beijing fails narrowly in 430BC
310BC Scandinavian ship makes contact - they are backward
190BC finally take Beijing with its Pyramids just before it was due to build GW giving it a GA.
110BC Romans make contact via Greeks
10BC Chinese off mainland exc small city S of most northern iron, get 3 island cities and lit in peace deal
Contact with Japs and English

Revolted in 190BC finally becoming Rep in 30BC after 8 turn anarchy
Rome is strongest other civ having beaten up on Japan

Vikes landed on our ex-Chinese island with 3 archers, 2 warriors next to one city in 90AD -> gifted city to them
They proceded to land 3 archers and 3 warriors by the next 2 turns later -> repeat
The third city we cash rushed a spear but it was defeated by 2 archers
So much for our peace treaty cities

Future Plans - research to Astronomy for Copernicus induced GA

Any comments or changes to spoiler welcome

Sorry its so dry - difficult to compete with some of the witty offerings already posted

Sanitation is optional. Please continue the plan to get Hoovers. Shields are more important than gold at this time and Hoovers gives us shields. We can do sanitation once we have flight.

I have taken a look at the save. Many cities in the ICS region can afford additional scientists now that we have rails. They should be mm'd for this.

Other than that... lookin' good! :D

Own said:
Maybe santitation is a good tech to get, for metros?

Sanitation will take us an extra 4 turns min, plus have to build the hospitals
We are already using every avail shield on our home continent and the extra commerce of a few extra coast tiles is not worth it.

Yes, several of them can afford more scientists, but adding more scientists when we're already at a 4-turn research pace would be stupid.

They could be made into tax-men, but I felt that we gained more by letting them grow in size naturally during these periods, so that when they are needed they can support an additional scientist or so each.

Cash is always a good thing to have. I'm sure the research rate could be cut back.

Also in many cases, the wrong cities are growing. Orlando should grow. Canton should not. Boston is working a mountain. Etc.

I know micro-management is a Pain in the a**, but it's worth it.
