Because it's an ethnic slur.

Given 200 years of English domination, any french quebecer is going to be offended when called a f**king frenchman by an English Canadian. It is no different then walking into the little Italy of any major North American city and start screaming "F**king W*ps".

No it isn't, and DeL just went at lengths as to how it isn't an ethnic slur. To repeat, I wouldn't care if an America screamed "****ing Canucks," and Canadian is also an ethnicity, at least to Statistics Canada. People of Canadian ethnicity comprise the vast majority in Quebec anyways, French are less than a third. Quit getting your knickers in a twist over nothing.

But there's no point in discussing with you if you're using terms like "English domination".

Pasi, I am english Canadian and yes quebec was dominated by the English for centuries. To the point that the french language was almost dead in Quebec 40 years ago it was so bastardized. The economy was almost entirely controlled by English Canada and American's. Read up on the quiet revolution.

Denis Potvin, Marcel Dionne, Luc Robitaille and Mario Lemieux have all been captains of the National Team during the last 30 years or so.

I guarantee you that all of them have used "les osties d'Anglais" instead of "person who happens to speak another language than mine" at some point in their career.

Hell, show me a francophone who hasn't uttered "les osties d'Anglais" at some point in his/her life and I'll show you a francophone who is mute.

Sure, it's different: they're public figures. But I want to be able to keep on calling you guys "osties d'Anglais" if it strikes my fancy, so I'll let the hockey teams in my garage league call us "****ing frenchies" as we beat them, and, by extension, Ladislav Nagy or Shane Doan do it as well.

Did we need Coderre to launch an ostie de law suit? No.
Should Hockey Canada have waited until that was settled to name a defendant as Captain? I thought they did, but apparently they did not.

Have I actually heard about this from any of my RL friends? No.

For me, the ultimate mystery remains: why did Jack Layton join the fray? It's not as though the NDP stands to gain anything in Quebec, because there is nothing the NDP can do to win votes in Quebec.

The reason the NDP joined the fray (from an NDP supporter): Because they REALLY need publicity on anything not pertaining to the words "environment" "energy" "green" or "union". Also, the more people that know the NDP exists, the better. Its like Ralph Nader saying something. Its simply to prove he exists.

also, to show he is a patriotic canadian who cares about hockey.

Yeah, after they drove the French out, allowing the French people to keep their language, customs, religion, and their entire culture, is total domination. Even though any other government would have forced them to assimilate, allowing the French people of Quebec (today less than 30%) is completely dominating them. I totally see your point.

Well, nobody's perfect.
