There is published analysis showing black is Ok. Safe to play over the board. Too dangerous to play in correspondence.

 It's my favourite for rapid play, I look forward to using it in anything less than 20 minutes over the board! Anyone ever heard of the Halloween Attack? Of course bear in mind that in my neighbourhood, it's rare that you encounter high level opposition unless the event is rated ;)

Correspondence is indeed not the best time to take risks, so my repertoire online is somewhat restrained than my RL play :D

I think I'm going to lose to attila22 again, and my Lil Match game is not going smoothly either. The only spot of sunshine is that my match with urithon is still not done, making it my longest chess game ever!

Anyone ever heard of the Halloween Attack?
A high school friend of mine played that as much as he could. It was a bit annoying that his infatuation with that opening coincided with my infatuation with the Nimzowitch Defense (1. e4 Nc6).

I found it somewhat easy to obtain an okay position with black against the Halloween Attack though by giving the piece back at an opportune time.

My game against Grey_game (2400+) is getting intersting. I'm playing white in a dragon - fun because I play this as black and know it pretty well.

He sac'd a piece for 3 pawns and I've just countersac'd. I cant see this game going to an endgame.

If he takes the knight, I think BxB wins.
If he takes the bishop Qh6, Bh5 Rxh5 Ng5 does the job.

I think ...

I doubt it- he's taking a holiday.

My plan after e5 is to exchange pawns, exchange bishops then play Qh6 which kills him.

I think I'm winning - I think playing a6 as black is just too slow in this line - but maybe he has an improvment in mind. This opening can lead to very suddwen death - I've just downed the Chinese number 4 in 20 moves as black in the Dragon.

He gets to fight on!

I play Rxa3+ and I'm winning but the game is far from over.

Something of a premature resignation wasnt it - but I think he was completely shocked at my combo which won queen for rook and bishop that all the fight went out of him.

None of my games look good. :( I really do not want to register a whole bunch of losses!

Well, you were 500 points higher rated... I was going to ask why you didn't play Qa5 in one move but I think I figured it out. You needed to move the rook first so that after Nd5, Qxd2, Nxe7 you could play Kf8 or you would have dropped a pawn... tricky opening that dragon.

Yes - it was book apart from the last3 or 4 moves!

It looks awkward to play Qc7 the Qa5 but you got it spot on. White has Nd5 in many lines.

Oddly I wasnt 500 points higher at the startof the game - but my rating has gone up and up very quickly. I'm undefeated so far on Chess.com - but it wont last. I've had a couple of lucky wins. Last one my opponent turned down a draw, pressed too hard and lost.

As poorly played as it was, I have to admit I really enjoyed the middlegame of this:

The computer analysis was somewhat heartless:

Inaccuracies(?!): 9 = 19.1% of moves
Mistakes(?): 5 = 10.6% of moves
Blunders(??): 1 = 2.1% of moves

Just because the computer wanted me to win the piece my opponent blundered away on move 10 (11 Qxb4 Nxb4 12 Bxg7 Nc2+ 13 Kd2 Nxa1 14 Bxh8 and black's knight has nowhere to go), and I instead opted to come up with a brilliant piece sacrifice of my own :mischief: there is no reason to be so critical. Computers just don't understand tactics ;).

Anyway, that is the style of chess I like, but for some reason I seem to do better with it in blitz :hmm:.

If anyone wants, they can analyze this loss to urithon in game 1 (I'm black):

55. Rg2 Kc1
56. Kd3 Kb1
57. Kc3 Ka1
58. Kb3 Kb1
59. Rg1#

What's makes me more upset is that I had no way out, and that he was able to win offline via setting up conditional moves!

Where do I still need to improve?

Since it doesn't look like there are any takers yet, I'll do my humble best at analysis.

1. d4 Nf6
2. c4 g6
3. Nc3 Bg7
4. e4 O-O

The most often played move here is d6, which deters e5, but O-O is also common.

5. e5 Ne8
6. f4 d6
7. Nf3 Bf5

Bf5 doesn't appear in the book variations at all. It keeps white from playing Ne4, but the coming bishop trade causes a pawn weakness.

8. Bd3
Hard to guess if this was meant as just a developing move or if it was played expecting ...Bxd3.
c5
This is popular for move 7, but here it allows white to mess up your k-side pawns by trading on f5. The position after 8...Bxd3 transposes to a position with one game in the master database, in which black won.

9. Bxf5 gxf5
10. dxc5 Nc6

Good, Nc6 is the move used in the main line after dxc5.

11. cxd6 exd6
12. Qc2

Exploiting the weakness created earlier.

dxe5
13. Qxf5
Watch out for patterns with a queen on a square that attacks h7 (or h2) with a knight that can reach an undefended g5 (g4).

Qa5
Not a bad concept. Attack on the opposite flank can be powerful if it succeeds faster than the opponent's attack.

14. O-O Qc5+
15. Kh1 Nd6
16. Qh5 Rfe8
17. fxe5 Nxc4
18. Ng5

Here's that dangerous pattern

N6xe5
This is one place to look if there is an improvement available. Previous comments (and upcoming moves) should give you a place to look.

19. Qxh7+ Kf8
20. Nce4 Qb6
21. Qf5 Qg6
22. Nh7+
Very nice!

Kg8
You're stuck with a choice between g8 and e7. The problem with g8 is that it sets up a fork position. White has two knights so can afford to trade one away to get the fork with the other. Analyze if Ke7 would turn out better.

23. Qxg6 fxg6
24. Nhf6+ Kh8
25. Nxe8 Rxe8
26. Nf6 Rf8
Nice pin idea, but after a capture on f6 the same pin goes the other way.

27. b3 Bxf6
28. bxc4 Nxc4
29. Bg5 Bg7
30. Rxf8+ Bxf8
31. Rf1 Kg8
32. Rc1 b5
33. a4 a6
34. axb5 axb5
There are still some chances here. You have a passed pawn, and the promotion square is not the same color as the remaining bishops. White would have to make a mistake being up the exchange, but there is still hope.

35. Kg1 Bd6
36. Kf2 Bxh2
This is most likely a common endgame trap. The bishop can't get back out.

37. g3 Kf7
38. Kg2 Bxg3
Only thing to make the most of the bad situation.

39. Kxg3 Ke6
40. Rb1 Nd6
41. Bf4 Nf5+
42. Kf2 Nd4
43. Be3 Ke5
44. Bxd4+ Kxd4
From here out it's pretty routine. If this exchange were on the c-file where the b pawn can be protected, there would be a chance to draw by pushing the pawn up while keeping the king on the c file side of it, but without that white can eat the two pawns and reach the rook mate.

Good game - enjoying this one

Col, congrats on your win vs. Shiller (don't know if you mentioned it in another thread). Your current game vs. him (you as white) looks very interesting too. I've never seen that system vs. the caro kahn.

Its a system I play against several black openings - and as black
Canbe played v the French, Caro, Sicilian
ie The Kings Indian Attack.

It takes black on to my territory and off theirs - which is allI try to achieve in the opening against good players.
