Tenna vs. Mehmed100

Narz's Unofficial DRR

1. e4 c6
2. d4 d5
3. e5 c5
4. dxc5 e6

5. b4

This is a bad move. Be3 is the best choice.

a5!

My counter. It is a common idea in this opening.

6. c3 axb4
7. cxb4 b6
8. Bb5+ Bd7
9. Qe2 bxc5
10. Bxd7+ Nxd7
11. b5 c4
12. Nc3 ?

A silent blunder. It lets me set up a pin on the knight and lets me get a foothold on his position.

Bb4

13. Bd2 Qa5
14. Qe3 Nc5
15. Nge2 Nd3+
16. Kf1 Ne7
17. g4 Ng6
0-1

I believe that this is an informative example of how not to play against the Caro-Kann as white. ;)

There probably isn't much to analyze but I thought I played well.

P.S. Tenna is Tomoyo here on CFC right?

Played tonight against a 2064 player! He crushed me but I had I accepted his offer of two knights for a rook I would have been ok. I lost in an embarrassing enough way to make me not want to showcase it but it was an interesting enough game that I will (post it today or tomorrow).

Nice video, I only missed you telling us the time controls used. As for the game...

Spoiler :
What's 4... Qa5 about? Have you ever heard about developing your knights and bishops before the queen? (I want you to do well that's why I'm yelling at you, if I didn't care I wouldn't be so harsh :)) There is no need placing the queen on a bad square just to force white to exchange the bishop for the knight. He'll do that on his own in a move or two anyway as that's what white do in this opening.

5...bxc6 is usually as playable as dxc6. I'm not sure if there's a difference in this particular line with c3 and Qa5 but normally capturing towards the center is at least as normal as the alternative.

11. Nb3 wins an exchange although black's bishop pair could perhaps give some compensation.

13...Rd6 - I would want to play Nf6 and not have to worry about e5 (okay so e5 isn't a fork immediately following Nf6 but you always have to make sure nothing bad happens and if you miss just one thing it might be a loss, better to not place your pieces so dangerously if you don't have to). Also, now he could just play e5 with tempo immediately ruling out Nf6 entirely. I would clearly not have played Rd6 for those reasons.

17...bxc6 You said you felt safer taking with the pawn... I don't see it the same way. Your King is wide open the pawn protection about to be split. I would feel safer taking with the Rook to get one of his attacking pieces off the board. Not to mention getting the rook out of the way from an inevitable e5.

18...Ng4 It would be interesting to know why you ended up playing this instead of Nd5. I take one look at Ng4 and just rejects it out of hand. The knight has no good squares to go to from there and is further away from protecting your King.

At move 25 you said "I wasn't too worried about this move...Rb8+... because I can block and... after the exchange of Rooks I'm okay".

Well, let's take a look, shall we?

25. Rb8+ Rc8 26. Rxc8+ Bxc8 27. e6

Oups! Perhaps you weren't so okay after all.

27...Rf8 or 27. f6 is met by 28. Rb8 and the threat Qd7# cannot be met. (Let's say 27..Rf8 28. Rb8 fxe6 29. Ne5 Rf5 looks desperately okay-ish at first glance but the threat Rxc8 being mate just Qxa7 and it's so completely lost you are risking a 2-0 on the scoresheet.)

27...Rg8 28. Rb8 fxe6 29. Ne5 is no help and if instead 28. Kf8 29. Ng5 with a hopeless position (and mate in 10 to boot).

As I posted in the YouTube comments I thought it was an excellent presentation. I wasn't too crazy about the game itself though.

No, it wasn't super exciting. The strongest player I've faced in a tourney thus far though. I'll post some more soon. :)

I thought this game was alot more exciting/interesting than the OTB one vs. the expert.

If any of you guys (i.e. : mehmed or panz :D) want to give me some feedback on it I'll make a youtube out of it too and give you guys all the credit for the analysis. :)

I ended up losing on time :( (first & only coorespondence game I've lost on time) but am very curious as to how it potentially could have gone!

Ouch, I hate losing on time in correspondence. :( I almost did in the Unofficial Tourney. I'll analyze the game later.:scan:

EDIT: I haven't had time to do my analysis. Maybe Friday. :hmm:

Hey Mehmed, pretty exciting game you got going here.

I'll be watching the endgame and curious to here your analysis post-mortem. :)

Yeah that game is exciting. I'm glad I got the chance to get his queen. I didn't like the idea of my three pieces to his queen. I think the game is drawn but we could yet make mistakes. I'm thankful I have a long time control in that game. I've needed it.

Um. Oops.

I guess... I lost on time in that unofficial tourney.

Wow!! :eek::eek::D

I just beat ozzie in the Unofficial tourney. :crazyeye:

He made a blunder with his queen that allowed me to chase his king around. what a lovely game. I thought I was going to lose at around move 25 where I seemed way too passive. I'll analyze it later. I just need to take a breather. :woohoo:

Mehmed100 vs. ozzie_c_cobblepot
Narz's Unofficial DRR
Correspondence

1. e4 c6
2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 dxe4
4. Nxe4 Nd7
5. Ng5 Ngf6
6. Bd3 e6
7. N1f3 Bd6
8. Qe2 h6
9. Ne4 Nxe4
10. Qxe4 Nf6
11. Qh4 b6

After 10. Qxe4 and Nf6 I have two choices. The main line is 11. Qe2 but I chose the slightly sharper Qh4. The main continuation for black is 11. Ke7 which seems weird but is actually quite safe.

12. Ne5 Bb7
13. Qg3 Rg8
14. O-O Qc7
15. c3 O-O-O

The computer thinks that 15. a4 is better and keeps the initiative but the move escaped my notice.

16. f4 c5
17. a4 Nd5

Now I noticed it.

18. Nc4 cxd4
19. cxd4 Nb4
20. a5 g5
21. axb6 axb6
22. Nxd6+ Qxd6
23. Bh7 Rg7

I now played Bh7 as a way of not dropping pawns.

24. Bb1 f5

Here I thought I was too passive but analyzing it now, the computer says I was fine with no worries.

25. Rd1 Rdd7
26. Qf2 gxf4
27. Bxf4 Qd5
28. Rd2 Qc4

This is where he went wrong. It allows me to do all sorts of things.

29. Ba2 Qa6

The second giant nail in his coffin.

30. Rc1+ Kd8
31. Qh4+ Ke8
32. Bxe6 Rxd4
33. Qh5+ Ke7
34. Rc7+ Kxe6
35. Qxh6+ 1-0

And he resigned as Kd5 Qd6+ Ke4 Qe5#

It's a pretty common gambit in amateur play, sacrificing two pawns for development, I would never play it in a correspondence game but that was 5-minute blitz game and after my opponent wasted a move with 3. ... h6 I thought I'd go for the kill.

Ah ok, after looking at some games, I've also registered at chess.com :)

Cool site, but after my first two live matches I've just realised how badly I suck. Especially the timer is a completely new expierence, which made me play like a 5year old the first game. Also lost my second game (long game, not blitz) against some guy who wasted about 4 turns moving his outer pawns in the opening :(

I'm thinking, that if I want to improve my game it would be best to not play live chess but a couple of correspondance games right? I've already tried the tactic trainer which is a cool function..

edit: yay!! - won my first match :)
