I generally play Emperor or Immortal, occasionally trying a Deity game, but only when I choose my civ. My favorites are Maori and Cree. But yesterday I finished my most recent random game as Indonesia (I had forgotten how much fun Gitarja is to play). This game was Emperor on a splintered fractal map, which is rapidly becoming my go to map choice. And in this game, I developed two of my greatest cities ever.
The first city was Blue Hole, settled near Sukritract's Great Blue Hole natural wonder and not far from Mount Kilimanjaro. I built Mausoleum of Halicarnassus there, along with the Temple of Poseidon from another mod. Add Huey Teocalli for the adjacent lake tiles, kampungs on almost every coast tile, and Liang's fishery improvements on the rest, and this turned out to be the most powerful coastal city I have ever built. The game ended in 1670 with a diplomatic victory, and by then the city had reached size 32 and still had a +55 food surplus every turn. No telling how big it would have grown if I had not chosen to end the game diplomatically at that point. But I didn't want to keep hitting next turn. Also a coastal city with 120 hammers per turn is pretty impressive!
In the same game I also developed my highest appeal city ever. The city of Boreal Forest was settled on a coast with tundra in most of the tiles - a perfect setup for St. Basil's. Once that was built this city became a beast. The added culture enabled rapid growth. The borders grew large enough (with some judicious tile purchases along the way) that I was ultimately able to build four national parks in this one city, three adjacent to the city to the E, S and SW, and a fourth on an island to the N. I had never thought that was possible. I was able to build eleven national parks across my empire, which I believe was also a personal best. But Boreal Forest's parks were the best, even though there were no mountains or natural wonders in sight. It was mostly all flat tundra. But another city built Eiffel Tower, giving +2 appeal to all cities in the empire. And I was able to build Golden Gate Bridge connecting to the island to the north, giving +4 appeal to every tile in the city. I didn't improve any features, and used builders to plant woods on every empty tundra tile. Then add in Reyna's Forest Management promotion, which gives +1 adjacency appeal to every undeveloped feature in the city. The four national parks in the city had total appeals of 54, 55, 56 and 63. As you can see, I actually had two tiles with breathtaking appeal of 17. The only thing I can think of that I was missing was the Great Person who gives +1 appeal to every tile in a city. Have any of you ever had a tile with a higher appeal?
Please post photos and descriptions of your best cities in the thread below.
EDIT - I forgot to mention that I was also suzerein of Auckland, which really helps Gitarja.
