Shields Vs. Hammers

Should the production units be refered to as "Shields" or as "Hammers"

  • Call them shields, like Civs I, II, & III, it's a part of Civ lore

  • Hammers make more sense; after all you do build things with hammers

  • It doesn't matter what they're called, after all, a rose by any other name...

Marla nailed it.

shields, hammers, whatever. It's all production.

Neither really makes sence...

how can you build things with sheilds??
how can you mine hammers??

but it doesn't really matter what you call them.

Hammers make more sense, because shields represent military more than production, hammers are industrial symbols.

I miss Civ1. Never got a chance to play Colonization, though. I mainly heard about it after the fact. Shields or hammers -- it's just a gfx icon as long as the principle remains the same. It doesn't matter much to me if it's one or the other. Besides, what do you want to bet that among the first minor mods to appear after Civ4's release is going to be a hammers-to-shields converter?

I think that hammers are more logical, although the shield was unique to civ and the transition will be tough!!

Perhaps crate icons for production? But it doesn't really matter, be it shields, hammers, crates or little pink dots - as long as they get the gameplay right, I'll be happy.

hammers!
its like merging two of the best games together!

if us col fans cant have colonization2.. lets have the hammers :P

I Agree With Doronron

Shields are indeed part of Civ Lore!!

Civ IV Should provide a hammer to shield converter for those of us who cant cope with this thing could change (and logic!!)

:crazyeye: :crazyeye:

Hammers makes more sense.

And additionnally, they are also traditionnal : Master of Magic already used them ! (with anvils to represent 10 hammers)

I remember when I first got civ 2, the shields confused me greatly at first - obviously you expect them to be connected with defense in some way. spare new players this pain!

ahh civ 2, what a game. they don't make 'em like that any more etc.

However, I tend to believe that, if the idea is to represent production, using the symbol of a tool would be even better than the one of a hammer. After all, a tool can be anything...

A hammer's not a tool???

shields with hammers on them?

On this one though, i go with tradition over practicality/simplicity, because civ has such an interesting and long history. 'Why shields' is a question thaqt we have asked so long, it seems a shame to beg it now with this reasonable alternative.

:)

Umm, what's the symbol of a tool? (an inclined plane, a lever) I think if you asked people to draw a symbol of a tool a hammer would be one of the most common symbols they drew.

I'm sure within 30 minutes of the game being in general release there'll be a hammer-to-shield mod. It should be trivial since the hammers themselves likely aren't 3D. I might even do it myself if no one else has by the time I get the game (not that I'd use it myself, but I'm gonna be messing with all those graphics anyway) :)

Civ Lore man, Civ Lore.

Thank god for modding. We'll bring those shields back. ;)

Shields, Hammers, Bananas... It is still civ and used to represent production. I liked shields though.

A hammer was too commie back in the day I guess...

 I know what you mean.

Thanks for the two screenshots guy, that takes me for a trip down memory lane to the good all days. Sorry got off topic for a second there. I don't believe it really matters, its just a symbol for production in the end. It didn't make a difference when they went from heads of wheat to slices of bread to symbolise food in civ3, after a couple of games you wont even notice.
