Long time AOE player. Thought I would make the switch to something that seems a little deeper than the usual tactics of build 2 slingers ..rush early =win tactics of AOE.

I've watched about 10 hours of video. There are a few variations on beginning game tactics but not much.

It seems if you want to build a powerhouse economy and only go with 1 warrior and slinger, you get pestered to death by barbarians. Even after beating everything nearby, because you have a small force, its pretty much guaranteed someone will surprise war on you = your dead. Even when going full economy, I noticed my 3 cities with 8 population was a tad small compared to sweden 15 population. This was at turn 59 when I got my government. I have read you should have it by turn 50 so I'm still slow.

I have success when I build up 4-6 man army and start taking cities right away. Weakens the enemy and I get a couple of cities. Which is why I bring up AOE. I'm not interested in playing that style. Am I playing the wrong game?

...and is it possible to turn off religion? What a pain in the a#@

AoE is a conquering game. You can conquer in civ, but there are many more ways to go, and I think most people would argue that the non-conquering ways are more fun + more representative of what civ is. Try a science victory.

Also, in this particular civ, population doesn't mean TOO much. For better or worse (I'd argue worse), in civ 6, a whole lot of pop 8 cities are better than a small number of pop 15 cities.

There's a lot of rushing in AOE too. If you try to fast castle with 2 units, the enemy can punish you quite handily for it.

AoE appeared, back in the 90’s as the “RTS civ” (yes, Empire Earth and RoN appeared later with a more closer/broader approach, but AoE wasthe first to be labeled as such). And there has ben a lot of cross-feeding between all these series trough the ages, so it is likely many things, and the base tactics, may seem similar.

Rushing is a viable, and normally efficient tactic in most of the strategy gente. Hit strong and fast so your enemy cannot develop properly (and you get access to part/all of “his” resources). As long as you can do it without sustaining much loss, the snowball effect is powerful and starts building early, so it is, and will always be, a must for “quick win” strategies.

However, even this is the “faster” (and as such, the only one you will see advised in “pro” videos), take care this is not the only viable win strategy in civil. TBS games nature makes it possible, with some tactical planning and careful diplomacy, to not be overwhelmed by early leads (a thing that is much more difficult in the faster-paces RTS). Explore the possibilities and you will see you may buy your way out of an early barbarian rush. Expand wisely and you will lay out the plan for a fast-building empire. But nevertheless, remind this is a strategy game, and that crippling your enemies is also necessary nevertheless.

Ah, and coming from AoE, and saying religion is a pain in the @... well, it’s just fun. ¡Wololo!
