I've never seen ships dies of attrition before, but I've also never played England. Yesterday, everything was fine. Today, myCiv5 was updated by steam, and now every few turns I have a Ship of the Line destroyed by attrition. A couple died in another player's territory (at war), one died in coastal and another just outside coastal waters.

I def have enough iron (28 of 40 used - all by ships, started with 34 ships before they started dying)

Is this normal or a bug? If not a bug what game mechanics causes this?

I think I can get that game save later (at work now).

I could see a possible similarity to that bug (it sounds like units were being killed normally but it's saying it was attrition). That is certainly possible. It would be odd in that I didn't see other units around. I was in range of a city a couple times, but they ships had full health and an empty city probably wouldn't destroy a ship with one hit.

That bug is pretty old, but it could be related. One difference I'd point out is that mine was single player. It's also an unmodded game. I'm just happy to hear that (at least at this point), it doesn't sound like intentional mechanics.

don't think I was bankrupt, I was actually about to build a city right next to the enemy and spend a ton of money buying barracks (etc) to build an in-close army.

I think I had $3000+, but I really don't remember.

i'm guessing there's some new mechanic for units losing a small amount of health in enemy territory during wartime.

EDIT - but if the units were previously at full health then it's probably a bug.

maybe so, and I'd say that's not a bad thing (especially if they let you minimize the effect with a GG / GA).

However, when I came over here to post this, it was because two completely healthy (100%) ships had just been destroyed in the same turn. That has to be a bug.

Good on you associating that reddit post. At least I know I'm not the only one.

Sorry for the delay.

You may get your wish. The only game save I had (including autosave) might have been just before, but I'm not sure. I honestly don't remember if it did or not. I played it an extra turn or two to try and recreate, but it didn't happen. I've attach the pre (dan) and the post (elizabeth).

Sorry I don't have the game save that definitely had them in there.

It was happening to me playing as Morocco while at war with Poland but it could of been the Hussars but it was happening to nearly full life units behind what was being attacked.

On G&K I once had a missionary die of attrition
Never happened to me again, though
Missionaries do die from attrition in foreign territory unless you have an OB with that civ. It's by design. Other units are not supposed to or at least we are not aware of such feature. And it looks like neither is Dennis Shirk, so it's probably a bug. :)

Just chiming back in that I can no longer recreate this issue. It just went away or was a fluky something or other...
