What is the appeal to keep playing Deity if you never win?
immortal is too easy when playing my fave civs/strats -- the jump to deity is steeper than any other difficulty though, we could really use some kind of intermediate option. Maybe immortal yields with deity unit spam or sumthin

I have another question.
My peace treaty expired with Danes long ago, however I cannot declare war on them. Because of existing peace treaty with their ally (defensive pact).

Then I go to vassal screen, declare war and all of them are involved, voila! without any problems.
I honestly don't remember in older versions that your allies can save you from war if they are at peace with warmonger in this way.

There aren't supposed to be a declare war option on vassals...

Yes this behavior changed in a recent version -- i'd need to dig to find which -- and it does seem a bit weird. There was a discussion on the discord about it ~last week.
@Recursive thoughts on this?

I can expand a bit. Danes came to my nearest city with 4-5 frigates and 2 corvettes, asked for tribute, which I declined ofc. And then he retreated. Seems he wasn't able to declare war on me because of Japan too, which is at least awkward lol.
ps. my philosophy is - if two civs are eager to fight, nothing must keep them from it.

Interesting. I generally play with a random civ so don't have the favorite civ/strat. It feels like Emperor and half or immortal and half when I roll a civ I've never really played before on terrain that does not synergise.
I imagine Deity would be tough with Desert Incas...

deity is impossible all around tbh, if winning a 'normal' game is the objective. I know a few here play it regularly, and as much as I enjoy the challenge, there are some aspects of it that maybe need to be revisited as VP matures. VP used to have more exploits available to counter the crazy yields and units the AI got at this difficulty, making it a little more 'viable', but most are long gone. TBH the unit spam, while challenging, kinda flattens the military play into mostly tower defense with a sprinkling of opportunistic offensive adventures to prune back the yield-leaders, which can snowball very quickly. On immortal i feel free to plan much more creative and interesting military campaigns, which are more enjoyable, but usually its only a question of when, not if, I can develop a lead there, unless i intentionally avoid optimal plays

Would love to hear about those fav civs/strats. I used to play emperor/immortal when I first started really understanding VP. Not sure if i got worse or the game got harder, but I've only been able to win on King these days. Even Prince for harder civs.

The game definitely got harder after an AI bonus rebalance this year. I got kicked from immortal back to emperor

For me its been harder from a tech lag standpoint, but easier from a war stand point.
I too went down to emperor until i mafe some adjustments and am back up to immortal.

Basically need spies for tech stealing. Congress proposals that boosts science of lagging civs. And focusing on science in general.

On the war front teocalis is essential even for a peaceful civ. The extra units allow a proper defense against even a technologically superior civ since the ai have less unit spam now.

Due to change in AI's tactics?
Feels weird when bot has the last city, some military and yet tries to retreat into oblivion. It might be realistic, tho, but doesnt add to enhanced gaming experience.

Like I deployed 7-8 ranged and 1-2 melee naval units in one doomstack. Came to AI's border, I had huge vision so I saw his moves. What bot did - brought 3-4 units, they firstly came closer to my doomstack, then got scared and tried to escape - for 1-2 tiles, which I believe how many AP left from previous move. (Yes I clearly saw back-forth moves) Without any tries to harras me, even with melee vs my ranged. Eventually I destroyed his small group without any hp loss. I can't say that's because I super pro strategist, meh.

Yep. Something has changed where they dont push as hard. Might be due to them having less units so they are trying to preserve them.

However you are mentioning naval. My understanding is ai naval has always been a weak point.

Ofc, AI are not much of a naval commander, and I doubt it will be easy to make them much better. But on land they have improved no doubt, although still far from perfect. So, if you want to enjoy a little bit of combat, you'll have to do it on land. I often disable all victory options but domination, hoping they will concentrate on the essential thing.

Does disabling victory conditions actually change ai behavior?
