Shocked by AI aggression on Chieftain

The problem is that the AI act too much "mechanically" and not enough emotionnally. I want to fight civ leaders, not AI-made-to-compete-with-you-to-win-the-game.

At first, I disagreed with Killer. How does the beginner learn to play chess? By having the opponent sacrifice all their pawns & open their King to attack? No.

But, after a while, I agree. I began to think on other games, where I was much newer & less "into" the game. The original version of SimCity comes to mind. I only played it on the super-easy version with infinite $$. Sure, I didn't get the into the strategic value of the game, but I enjoyed building a metropolis, uninterrupted just the same. I can see no harm in including another option to the startup screen for a 'sandbox' style game.

Well each civ does have an aggresiveness slider and playing against a map of non-aggresive opponents does make a difference verse playing a game with the highly aggresive civ's. I have played a game with no wars at all, well at least until I got an itchy trigger finger in the modern age with my mech infantry and slaughtered the AI civ's (this was playing against China, France and I think India).

Thanx for all the responses!

One thing that came to my mind: Why is the AI less aggressive on higher levels?
Because then it doesn`t fall back so bad in tech, thus whatever it tries to squeeze out of me it is of less worth than a tech - thus less reason to go to war over!
Does anyone else have similar experiences???

Another thing: Another game played the same way, but expandind as fast as I could I was still at war with 5 civ soon. All of them were non-aggressive ones, since the aggressive ones were rather closeby and 'knew' how strong I was.
Funny thing: the most aggrerssive Civ in every game I play is...... India! WTH???

If you only have 4 cities (and, map size may be important here!) the AI sees you as food. They will come for you.
