Should drivers license renewal need tests?

For the interest of being fair, I'd just retest everyone every 5 years.

Even people without a drivers license? :ack:

I'd like to relate a personal anecdote. I foolishly allowed my DL to expire a few years ago and procrastinated on the renewal. By time I did try to renew, it was too late and I had to retest. It was an eye-opener. I had indeed forgotten many things since I was 16 (decades ago), and others I never learned. I'm a better driver today for having had to retest. I now see how poorly others drive and I'm much more defensive and less aggressive that I used to be.

lol, this seriously. Just imagine how many people in California would fail just from speeding and rolling stops. Everyone in California goes at least 5-10 mph over the speed limit (and those are the slow ones), you can actually tell the out of staters because they go the speed limit.

Another one is rolling stops, which is known colloquially around the country as a "California stop" (i.e. never making a complete stop at a stop sign, just kind of rolling through the intersection while looking around), which literally everyone in California does, usually without even realizing it.

While I really do get were you're coming from, last time I looked into it elderly drivers, they don't have a significantly higher insurance risk per mile driven than other age groups.

That may only be because there are few elderly drivers. They are usually on a fixed income and can't afford a car.

Note I said insurance risk per mile driven; it doesn't matter how many of them there are, or how much they drive.

I certainly think there are elderly drivers who shouldn't be driving because of results of being elderly, but there seem to be many people of other ages who also shouldn't be driving as well.

But those people are only bad drivers due to bad driving habits, not from frailty.

Absolutely not. There shouldn't even be a need for a drivers license. Get rid of this useless government oppression and bureaucracy.

I don't like this idea, though perhaps there should be some sort of test if you are trying to instruct your child on how to drive. Some sort of test or class you have to take to ensure you are teaching the correct way to drive.

You don't actually believe this, do you?
