This is a discussion thread. Should we buy maps from other nations? the aztecs already have map making but we cannot trade due to the war. Should we buy the maps of other cultures? Wich ones and why? please discuss

EDIT-- There is a current discussion on the same topic in the FA thread, please read there too.

I believe that any money spent on maps at this time is potentially a waste of money. The Aztecs do have Map-making as do many other civs. They also place value on their knowledge of the world because they would rather give us all their knowledge than their maps in return for peace. We will obtain their maps by force soon enough. Save our money for more important things to come.

I agree with FortyJ.

A world map will be ceded to us when we drag Monty to the negotiating table. Let's look at the world map situation after we see what the Aztec have to give.

So, we expect good maps from the war. But we will not have them until the war is over. While we wait for the war to end we are hampered in our long term planning because do not know what is out there. It'll take 3+ turns to capture Teotihuacan and 3+ more to take the city on the east coast. 6+ turns to take the western city on the Forked River if we use a different task force from the one heading east. I doubt the war will end next turn chat. It may be over in 15 turns if we're lucky.

We are piling up gold for what purpose? We cannot use the gold to rush improvements. That is also far off. We are 15 turns from literature. If the war ends around then and we get polytheism from Monty then we have to research monarchy (40 turns?). For the sake of argument say we get monarchy from the Aztecs. By the time the anarchy is over it is 20 turns from now. We can afford to spend a little on maps.
Here is the current cost of territory maps and embassies.

It may be worth 47g to buy Japan's map so we can do some long term planning. We could also buy Japan's map for 1gpt + 29g or 2gpt + 11g. We can get America's map for 1gpt + 3g. For a total of 3gpt and 14g we can start dicussing our next war now. :king:

I can see your point donsig.

If we are going to buy a map, it should be Japan's, as that data is is critical in identifying our future military directions.

Also, America should not be ignored. They are encroaching on Morgana's southern borders.

My opinion on the suhject: at the moment, map purhasing is simply way to expensive. It need only be reserved for future military targets.

We need to get maps, however, "buying" maps shouldn't occur until AFTER we find what we can take from the Aztecs.

Yeah, they do want our map but I think most citizens would be against revealing our position. I know I am against selling our map though I would like to buy the Japanese and American maps now. :king:

I agree with Donsig and Bill. I believe Japan's map will be beneficial to us. Maybe we can make a decision on this before the next t/c. I think America can wait, but their map is preety cheap, so what they heck.

If at all possible, I would like to purchase the American maps. Their scouts should have uncovered the majority of the territory around us as well as that which is very far away. They probably have a good picture of our area, so our maps are probably not that valuable.

It would be very helpful to know at least the general location of each civilization, as this will greatly influence our dealings with them.

Yeah, they do want our map but I think most citizens would be against revealing our position. I know I am against selling our map though I would like to buy the Japanese and American maps now

You forget, Firaxis has revealed that the AIs already know the entire map.

quoting Donsig:
