Sid game anyone?

Well, there seems to be enough interest to seriuosly start thinking of a Sid CotM... :wow:

The general idea was to go demigod next month, then demigod/deity on December; I could keep the next Archipelago map for January... on Sid!

I would definitly play a regular SID G/CotM, and suffer an embarrassing defeat.
So what? To me, G/CotMs are about two things: fun and comparison. Even clearly losing the game, I´d probably have a lot of fun trying to survive as long as possible. And comparing the SID-games in spoilers should be as exciting as educational.

Totally agree with you here. I never even tried Sid difficulty but i would join in an instant, alone the discussions of the choices made would teach me more than 100 monarch games. Besides, you learn more from defeat than from victories

I am mainly just waiting for civ4 nowadays, (I am not sure whether I even want to like it though) but think a Sid game would be great fun. It is even fairly easy to set up a game whereby most players would win. Surely lots of people would be tempted out from under their stones for this.

Clearly sid games are vunerable to luck but so are regent games etc. There is something particularly satisfying in winning on the highest level. I don't agree with the guys who regard good starts as not proper Sid level.

It would be very funny to see the posted results. Typically out of 100 entries, there are about 5 losses or so. A sid game could produce the opposite effect. 5 people might win! I guess the real challenge would be to see who loses by some method other than conquest. See if you can survive long enough to lose by spaceship. A histographic loss would probably be impossible. Anyone up for the challenge?

Wow, I get my own forum started :)

I have tried numerous times on Sid to try and Win and have never done so. In fact i've only ever won on diety twice.

I'm surprised that nobody had mentioned a Sid Gotm before.
I believe that there is no point in making the start too generous such as 4 cows and 4 luxs in the start location as this would counter the Sid setting to some degree, but starting with a 2nd settler for conquest setting may be useful in getting more people to play, oh and don't even think about a predator class (just exactly what would you do? Ai start with 3 settler? :) )

I just wanted to see who would be able to win on such a brutal setting.
Brutal being a huge understatement for any who have tried Sid.

My guess is that if 100 people submitted maybe 10 would win.
Who wants to prove me wrong?;)

P.S for those hoping that Archipelago will slow down the tech pace are in for a bad surprise :)
Although it could be useful to set the AI up with useless traits such as making them all expansionist (with no barbs) or religious (They revolt for 1 turn in SID regardless of whether or not they are religious.) And NO SCIENTIFIC AI'S

(I've tried all this and it is the only way I can even remotely keep up with the tech.)

There's still civ2 gotms going on, so I assume civ3 gotm will continue, they will just be less popular.
They will continue. We'll run both of the Civ3 versions as well as a CIV game (at least in the interim). At worst, we might drop Civ3 down to 1 / month (which will be difficult to choose from C3C vs Classic for mac players - a conundrum).

but less civ 3 gotms will be compensated by more civ 4 gotms :D
i wonder how many options civ 4 will leave to modding and editing especially for gotms. (maybe even scripts upon an event ? ...)

I have never tried sid as well :) But I might be tempted to play one, just to see how it goes :) I'd probably loose :D But that doesn't make the game less interesting :D

And I will continue to play civ3 game of the months for a while I think, especially conquests. I don't even know if I will like cIV as much as civ3, but that's just a matter of time I think, might be playing both games if I have the time :P

As mentioned before, the reason for running mapfinder for top HoFers is not to get a winning position.. reason to search 100000 maps is mainly to get the highest possible domination limit for a milk run, or the lowest possible domination limit with 2+ cows and river for a fast conquest or domination win... and so on

My Diplomatic win was mentioned earlier.. that one was easy to get.. there was no fast diplo wins to speak of, so I simply picked the first map that came up with a cow and a river (I think it was the 5th or 6th map) and just played that. (Ofcource the map was set up to have max science rate.. all sci civs and sedetary barbs so the ais would have huts to pop for techs to get them into middle ages faster)

Not sure if I would play it, I mean I would start at least but some of the maps lose my interest.
The reason I wouldn't be particularily excited about Sid is that some difficulty levels tend to require their own strategies, and in Sid warring is intensely artificial. Landfall with mazes of cavalry using their zone of control to abuse the idiot AI isn't anything like a realistic simulation and is merely exploitive of the AI. To me gotm has not ever been about winning, but how you play the game, thus playing Chieftain or Sid make the game play very artificial and I become very aware how lacking the AI is and my overall enjoyment is reduced because of it.

I'm sure the staff can do much to make Sid fun, so this post is mostly just directed at the people thinking they will learn anything from Sid. You'll learn how to maximize production, but you can learn that in any level, but warring in Sid is not much like any other difficulty.
