So the constant nagging from cities recently conquered or built to join another civilization was supposedly fixed; Not quite true, as I've seen it appear once or twice during 2 games since the patch. But during my most recent game I've come across an enfuriating variation of it. Your Colonies still appear to be prone to it... I've just spent a while beating back the Chinese, and slowly giving their cities as they fall over to my Colony for the extra troops and to avoid maintainence costs. But as soon as I declared a peace treaty, he's started giving the cities back to the Chinese again, cutting off my army and undoing a good chunk of my work. Gahhhhh....

As you can see, the city he's just returned was two squares from the chinese capitol (it's under the text box) and I was going to use it in 10 turns to further chastise the Chinese. And now I can't... damn you Roosevelt, damn you and your attempts to curry favour with my mortal enemy! Oh well, hopefully the first Prince victory under this new patch regardless, when I complete a space ship soon...

Edit: It had better be soon... the cretin has given back 1 to 2 cities every turn since, so he's now down to the capital and one last city since I posted this, giving China back his entire empire almost. This... IS... A ... ZOGGING AWFUL FEATURE

Yeah, this was very annoying in my last pre-patch game.

What was weirder though, was that I was playing Aztec and several of my cities wanted to be part of Egypt (who had previously conveniently proposed to become my vassal out of the blue ^_^) despite being 100% AZTEC.

What the deuce?

Agree, think I remarked elsewhere, and it's cities that have like ZERO foreign presence, wanting to join my vassals, and these are cities I founded and have NO border with the vassals.

Something rotten in Denmark...

This "feature" is undoubtedly the worst implemented of any in this game, and is a serious blemish which needs fixing. It's bad enough dealing with (that is, ignoring) requests from my big border cities wishing to join a civ which has neither the techs required for some of the buildings I have constructed nor the resources to keep the citizens happy and healthy, but learning that a colony can and does give cities away is truly horrible.

I wonder whether this "feature" throws the AI off as well. Inmy current game, I tried to block a bottleneck on my continent with two cities, but I was too slow - before the culture gap closed, Genghis slipped a settler through. He then founded a city on my peninsula, mined the gems there, built a road straight through my territory to connect the city (I had granted him open borders after my plan to close the peninsula off failed), and then ... liberated the city to me.

Why would he go to such lengths to found a connect a city there, only to give it away afterwards?

Of course, it's *possible* that his evaluation of the city changed ... perhaps he had found another source of gems, saw that my culture was already approaching his city, and thought that in the long run he'd lose it anyway. He also was pleased with me, I paid him tribute a few turn earlier. Still, giving away a whole city seems odd for him.

If you have a vassal no matter how small, culturally insignificant and far away from your territory suddenly all of your cities, cultured or not, are begging to join his empire.

Before the Germans asked to become vassals Berlin flipped to me, but afterwards it's always whining to rejoin even though it has more culture than their entire empire put together.
Sorry too late to change your mind.

I really hate this, I would love to switch it off, most of the time, if you did want to offer a city, you could do it from the main city screen..... Not sure about the logic behind it.

Comeone guys please fix!

Added frustration comes from the fact that returning the city gifts the other AI the extra two units as well; fortunately Mao had been such a devil to all the other Civs that I got a diplomatic and "Joint Military Struggle" bonus for keep attacking him, which kept them off my back whilst I snuck out the Space Race... But I think the problem with Roosevelt was caused by the fact that the new colony started out with no history ("Cautious") with Mao, and although part of my Empire he isn't able to judge what I think he should do when the request to return to the Chinese comes in... The war in which I was fighting was declared before he becomes independent, and although I liberate Chinese cities to him, he doesn't seem to be able to see this, but instead judges the Chinese cultural presence combined with his own reputation and personality instead. Fortunately a few more wars against Mao and he hated him as well and stopped doing it, but it was a close run thing... no thanks to Roosevelt, all thanks to Modern Armor returning the proper shape of the world

Heheh... if anything shows how messed up the current situation is, it's that ^

I completely agree.

In a recent game, I decleared war on the Chinese because they had the last four cities on my continent that were not under my control. I had previously shown the Native American and Dutch civilizations who was boss by taking over their entire empire, thus gaining control of the majority of the continent. After taking the Chinese capitol and the rest of the cities on the cntinent, I discovered that he had four more cities settles on various islands. Not wanting to commit to a naval war, I asked him to capitulate and become my vassal.

Once I became the master of the largest contintet in the world with the Chinese firmly under my thumb, a curious thing started to occur. All of the cities in my vast empire took turns demanding to "rightfully return to the Chinese empire." It seemed that the Native American cities and Dutch cities (many of which I ruled for more then 2000 years and had never seen any Chinese cultural influence) demanded liberation to their Chinese masters even more often than the actual Chinese cities. Even the cities that I had founded in the first few turns of the games wanted to become part of my Vassal's empire!

What a messed up game mechanic. Is there any way to disable it?

The only method I can see for avoiding this hideous defect in the game is to never take a vassal and never make a colony. This of course demands that one does not use two of the main features in BtS. "Rightfully" ? Tchah and ptui: what utter rubbish ! It's very very close to being as dreadful as was the corruption in Civ3, which ruined that game for me. Rather like having a banquet and getting a dish of maggots served for dessert.
