Silly Newb Question

Hello all,

I searched for this, but couldn't find a simple answer.

I just started playing CivIV, and believe it or not, it's my first Civ game. I've always been partial to the Creative Assembly line, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

Here's my question. Say within the fat cross of my city, there is a gold deposit, wheat, and cows. Then, I build a mine, farm, and pasture on top of them. Do I then need to build roads from the tile containing the improvement to the center city tile to get the benefit?

I can see on the city screen that I'm getting a bonus from the resources, but I've heard some talk about building roads.

What gives?

You get both production bonuses from the resources and control of the resource itself, but for the latter you need not only the improvement on the tile but also a road to the nearest city, or a connection to existing roads, including a road on that actual tile.

Thanks for the answer, but it brought up another question. What does 'control of the resource' mean, and what does having it do for you?

control of strategic resources, such as iron, copper and horses are needed for you to be able to build certain units. Health resources give you health bonuses and happiness resources give you happiness. As for connecting to cities, rivers are like roads. All cities connected to each other gain the same benefits of having a specific resource. So all cities that connect to the copper for example can build axemen.

You need to have a route to the resource. This can be either a road, a river, or a combination of the two. If you have BtS, you need sailing to use rivers like this. You also need the correct improvement on the resource. If you mouse over the tile it will tell you. If you have it connected to a costal city or costal fort(BtS) then it can also be connected to cities by coastal squares (and ocean squares in your borders) with sailing and ocean squares with astronomy.
