I'm playing Ragnar at Monarch level on a normal-size fractal map at Epic Speed.
This is the initial situation:
Ragnar stars with Fishing and Hunting. Unfortunately there's no water near. There's fur, but that isn't a good tile to work early on. So I will build a warrior, and then a worker and a settler and research agriculture, mining and bronzeworking.
The city certainly has a lot of potential with all those riverside tiles.
Turn 9: I get agriculture from a hut, so I get it 3 turns early.
turn 10: oops
Why didn't I move up that hill. Saving half a turn of movement is no excuse or not ending a turn on defensive terrain.
So let's press enter for a few more turns.
The warrior is sent off to continue where the scout was killed.
Turn 21: The first opponent:
What I've seen so far from him is a lot like Isabella. Often going to war with the infidels or - if there are no infidels around - any neighbour that looks weak. Another problem is where he is located. I can't see his scout anywhere....
O wait, there it is:
it seems he came from the east. It appears that Animals don't heal by the way. This lion and the one that ate my scout were easily dispatched later.
It's good I looked again at this picture, because there are some blue borders in the top right. That means there's a French, Khmer or American up there.
I work the riverside wine tile for a bit to make sure bronzeworking is done early enough for the worker to start chopping after improving the farm.
The worker comes out and sets about improving the rice. After he's done he can start chopping the settler. I work the riverside wine tile for a bit
Turn 40: bronzeworking is done. and I start chopping. I'll make another scout first, because there is much scouting to be done. Copper has turned up to the north, but It might be better to do a territory grab to the east. It seems I can block off a lot of land if there's no one in the west or the north.
Turn 48: My scout pops mysticism from a hut.
Turn 51: my second scout kick the bucket in the north. At least he revealed the terrain round the copper site. There's and obvious plains hill between 3 resources. My warrior is healing near washington's borders in the east. No more info will be done before my settler will be done. I think I'm forced to send hom to the east, because my warrior is there. This will be a bad map for barbarians, so I'll research archery.
Here is the map of the known world. If there's no one in the west I'll be able there's a lotmore room than usual. Maybe an AI met the four barbarian archers in 3400 BC?
