I've been wondering, with the recent comments about small civs being competetive, and the dangers of expanding too quickly, if this might cause some civs to sell off parts of their population (workers?) as slaves and generate more income that way.

There has long been talk of a civic option of eliminating slavery, which makes other civs who have not done so more unhappy... what actual effect would that have? Would your captured workers go running off in all directins to find a better life in the jungles?

Slaves in Civ3 have 0 maintance cost. Maybe that will be also true in Civ4, and, when you free slaves, they become normal workers, with maintance cost. I don´t think they will be disbanded and I am preety sure they will not return to their civs.
As selling people to generate income, I personally don´t think will happen (I think you can sell workers, like you could in Civ3), but it´s a nice idea.

it is said workers from all nations would join you if you have access to Pão de Queijo.
diliça! =D

I doubt they'll have slave trade system like that in. The furthest they're going to go is the civic option allowing slavery and the trading / capturing of workers.

i hope there is a good slave system put in to properly represent the important place slavery had in the ancient world and the impact it had in the early modern

Well, if they fail to include it, then guess what I am going to be modding in fairly early in the piece :mischief: . Don't know how it would exactly work, but I had something which I tried to implement in Civ3, but couldn't seem to make it work properly-namely a Slave Labour System as a National Wonder. In Civ3 I was thinking it could act as a slave market in all your cities which-in turn-give you a bonus to your production and commerce (but at a high maintainance cost). Additionally, I was thinking of limiting the building of this 'wonder' to having won a victory on the battlefield, and/or having an appropriate 'strategic resource' (like an indigenous population)-sorry, I know that is totally evil of me  .

In Civ 3 you could sell off workers, but only at rare occasions. I never figured out why....

They have to be in your capitol. You can buy them too, if the AI happens to have some in his capitol (rarely), which is worthwhile especially early in the game - the AI sells them quite cheaply and of course they have no maintenance.

Except for people's sensetivities, it's actually a very good idea.

I was actually thinking they should implement slavery in such a way that from the perspective of the player, its attractive .... you get free production, food, etc. bonuses by building sweatshops, plantations, etc. that depend on slave labor ... and then, suddenly, some ijit comes along with emancipation and all those bonuses you have come to rely upon are suddenly gone, obsolete. It could wreak havoc, maybe even cause a civil war ...... hey!!!
