I have had massive slowdowns and freezes on huge maps beginning with modern times. My system is a Sempron
2800+ with 1 gb ram and a TI4200. I downgraded my Forceware drivers to the april released 7.1, and now everything is smooth, with 80% of the map already discovered and 8 Civs, no freezes, no 2-minutes-waiting for the diplomacy screen. Hope that will help someone.
