We have about 10 people so far that play and most of us are rather new to multiplayer. One thing to be mentioned is that we do not play simultaneous mode but sequential for teamers 2v2, 3v3 etc. and hybrid for ffa. If you are interested in playing multiplayer not on simultaneous for whatever reason (you live far, you don't want to play RTS but a TBS game, etc.), then add me and I will try to invite you for games. Our most common game is 2v2 teamers and are really fun because you can analyze the battlefield and gameplay, talk with your partner etc. We save games if someone has to leave and continue them later.

Lastly, we play on Pangea Plus that we have edited to allow for city state distrubution on the pangea as well as the islands so that there is island real estate for the water races if they choose to settle there.

A team game on sequential sounds absolutely horrid. People typically play teamers because they are faster paced games that you can complete in 1 - 2 hours. Removing that aspect from team games seems to make them have no endearing features at all. FFA's are more in depth and better all around if you're down to spend 6 - 8 hours.

True turn based play in an FFA is more appealing. I suppose hybrid might work out if everyone was very conservative about going to war and there was rarely time wasted waiting for others who are at war. Otherwise you could be looking at 40 minute turns. Taking a turn, going to the grocery store and then still be waiting for your turn sounds a bit silly.

Have you guys considered GMR? It sounds like that might be your cup of tea.

Hybrid gameplay messed up all sorts of stuff man. Civ 5 is absolutely fantastic on simultaneous, war feel real, you have a timer so planning attacks beforehand and how to logistically get to your target takes real skill. In my opinion you are wasting your time playing anything other than simultaneous turns.

Thanks for your comments. We prefer to play civ5 in full turn based mode in contrast to the Real Time Strategy aspect of simultaneous. So just posting to find people that enjoy that type of play. Just add me as a friend if you are interested in this format.
