So, how do Spies work?

I hope AI is able to use them both in offense and defense (especially protection of spaceport)...

Come on friend, We know on settings above prince the AI will just magic spies out of thin air, just like they could charm units without diplomats in Civ2 and how they were abundant in spies despite setting production to make stacks of doom in Civ4

Talked about it in the other thread. It is likely bonus units like the spy mission in BE.

Spying looks to be mechanically the same as BE but with more restrictions. Spies are built individually instead of being tied to a national wonder. Spies can only do missions that correspond with the districts in the target city. Stealing science can only give eurekas for techs your opponent has that you dont.

Is it somehow possible for a spy to smuggle a atomic bomb into an enemy city ?

It could be something with a low probability of success, but in case of success, it could deny the enemy of knowing who was behind it...

Only 1 nuclear power on the map... "Damn it! Who was it?"

Anyway, I'll pass.

When spies are captured after failed missions, you can negotiate their return via the trade menu.

Where did you see this King Jason? Is it in a video?

Yea, one of filthy's streams, he paid about 7gpt to get it back.

So spies can be captured, but can they be killed?

What would be the motivation for you or the AI to kill a spy if they may have some trade value?

I suppose if you are trying to bait an opponent into declaring war against you, and if this forced a heavy negative penalty, there could be some value in this option.

I just meant that there should be a chance of a failed mission ending in the death of the spy-as occurred in Civ5. Not necessarily that a player or AI would execute that spy......though that option should also exist, for the reason you mentioned ;).

I will say that the Spy system being quite robust compared to CiV certainly makes CdM's France quite interesting.

Having a Spy when no one else does (all else being equal) gives a window of opportunity.

I hope their will be different levels of diplomatic hits depending on whether your activities help you but don't really "attack" the target civilization or is really offensive. Stealing a technology they already have will help you but won't make them worse. OtoH, stealing a great work or sabotaging some buildings/wonders/spaceports is clearly an attack against them. Allied nations keep spying on each other in the real world but they don't sabotage buildings.
Also, i'm glad we can apparently simply run "intelligence" missions to keep an eye on what our "friends" are doing.

Trade value isn't everything. I know by trading the spy back they could be reused against me. I would likely execute them in many of my games if I believed it was a better long term option. Plus, there is no greater middle finger than an opponent asking to trade for their spy back and being able to say. Well, if the spy is worth 7 gpt, how much is just his head worth?
