Build a ship, send it out to sea, it sinks. Build a ship, send it out to sea, it sinks. 2 turns until I get the great lighthouse, woo hoo! Next turn, somebody else gets it (it would of helped). Throw the keyboard, say a few words that aren't allowed in the forums, go crack open up a beer .. continue with game. Send more ships out to sea. They sink.

After killing everybody on my section of land (a whole 2 civs) I'm stuck on this land mass by myself (guess I should of kept one of them alive, I couldn't help it though).

Is there any way to increase the odds of sending ships out to there deaths? Uhh, I mean .. getting them over an area of water? If they are veteran, does that increase the odds? Just wondering.

As far as I can tell, a veteran or elite galley sinks just as fast, and as often, as a regular. That's my horrible experience of it, at least...shudder.

That's what I've found in my games, but I'm not certain that a units rank DOESN'T increase ocean survivability. If so, shouldn't the Civilopedia or the manual say something about it? On a similar topic, have you noticed how enemy galleys sail the seven seas without a care in the world? In all my games, I've only ever seen an enemy ship sink ONCE. And yes, I've seen more than enough situations when there was a probability of sinking, but never happens.

I've never ever seen the AI ever send a ship to a spot where it had a chance to sink. Even if I'm the only one who has contact with the other hemisphere and there's a point where they can cross with only 1 turn in the ocean and they know exactly where this spot is and they've been begging me to sell them contact for thousands and thousands of gold... they won't even try.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showt...0928#post250928 thread.. weird.

Rushing temples? .. ok. That don't make sense.

I don't rush nothing at the cost of lives, I'm a good leader (besides the fact I declare war on whatever civ is closest to me). Temples is one of the first things I build.

I did manage to cross the ocean finally. Always nice to find out they have rifleman and you are still trying to get out of the first age.
 I was stuck by myself for to long.

Never seen the ai try to do the cross the sea of death thing either.

It seemed to me it was good to build 3 galleys (fortify until 3 are built)... have them in the same square .. then go for it. 1 of them made it. Probably has no factor but, maybe the civ3 gods felt pitty and allowed one to make it.

Well thought out saintides, and somewhat realistic, too. Multi-ship expeditions were the norm until the mid 1700s, and usually most of the ships were lost on the way.

I actually managed to win an archipelago game (Emperor, large map) recently. I had the same situation, small island with 2 other civs. I finished the Greeks quickly, but kept the Romans around so I could trade techs with them. I immediately headed for Map Making, started the Lighthouse and went exploring. I lost probably 10 galleys before I found most of the other civs, but with the communications and map I had to offer I could get myself to the same tech level as the leader.

In the end, I controlled the 2 medium-sized Islands and about half of the small ones (3-5 cities), while my main rival China controlled the largest Island. They would have won the space race, but I razed Beiging after a successful 32-unit Marine assault. :D

Using 1.21 now, and the temple thing still works  Diplo sometimes helps, too, but not as good as Temple rushing

must be something similar to the seed change for culture flips when you do diplo talks.....

Sealman - I started a game with my civ random and got the Babs. I instantly thought of you - a sure sign I'm spending too much time here.
