So.... what is the creepiest type of Insect?

I agree. But what's disgusting about them?

Is it the association between cockroaches and "dirt"? Or that they breed in large numbers and infest the place? But then loads of critters do that.

Is it that they aren't furry cuddly mammals?

I think it is a combination (i suppose for most people) of their shape and colors, along with the obvious issue of them breeding in huge numbers and being a horrible pest.

But even their image makes me feel bad, so i think it may boil down to them looking like the sculpture some home-schooled borderline dim-witted nasty-looking teenager made out of dirty plasticine.

The wiki article says it's only deadly to those with an allergy to the venom.

That's true of almost all venomous bugs though really. There aren't that many that are really dangerous to healthy, adult human beings.

I've heard that getting bit by one of those centipedes hurts an awful lot though. I sure as hell wouldn't go near one except under controlled conditions.

It's not so much that the venom is an issue so much as that they pick you up and carry you off in the night. Then force you to listen to bad centipede folk music.

I'm really glad we live in a universe where it's physically impossible for land based arthropods to get big enough to actually do this. This kind of thing is literally the stuff of nightmares.

The folk music, I mean. The centipedes themselves would probably be chill bros.

That was pretty much the though, yes. :)

The Eastern US has all the fun!

I think living in a universe where you are the arthropod eating, er... entertaining humans would be a worse dream.

If we are allowed to include molluscs into a somewhat broader/wrong definition of insects, then I definitely nominate these chaps:

The blue bits are penises.

^I am pretty sure that no being like that can be in a category of 'insect'. That would be like arguing you can can cut water with a knife :D

I do like some types of snails, though. They seem peaceful. Particularly when it just rained and they move about slowly so as to chomp on a tiny bit of leaf for a while, which they manage to do by tearing it from the rest while pressing and pushing it hard between their toothless maw. :) If you listen carefully you can hear the abrupt and serene sound of their small victory against the leaf.

Well no, clearly not an insect. I was considering the greater domain of invertebrates.

Actually, don't snails, and slugs, have a single-toothed maw? I'll have to look it up.

Snails do have something or other. Because I often catch them gnawing at each other's shells, in the desperate hunt for calcium. Of which they seem to be inordinately fond.

edit:
Most snails have thousands of microscopic tooth-like structures located on a ribbon-like tongue called a radula. The radula works like a file, ripping food into small pieces
