I bought the game the other day, and I have played it through multiple times on varied maps and difficulties. Though the combat is satisfactory, the rest of the game seems a little hollow right now. Here are some varied suggestions for some improvements:

1) Rewards and Punishments: I don't think I have really seen any consequence for any of my actions or rewards for strategizing for 100+ turns. It really doesn't seem to matter what kind of civ strategy you use. You are punished for having a large civ by unhappiness which is very lopsided. You don't seem to get anything for being peaceful either. The other civs refuse to deal with you regardless. I would be peaceful, if I thought I would be able to engage in some meaningful diplomacy. Like the other civ games before it, Civ 5 pushes you toward a domination victory just to survive.

Some solutions: Bring back the throne room/palace! It was so great to add a piece to your palace/throne room. You actually felt rewarded for playing.

Adjust the other civs toward a more diplomatic bent sometimes. If you have a smaller army, they invade you. If you have a larger army, they hate you.

2) More options in Diplomacy: As I already said, it seems a waste of time even to talk to them. There should be a period correct, or even culturally correct, way to communicate with the other civ. You could have tribal sitdowns in the beginning then move up to Councils and summits. Allow the player to engage more. CIV 5 civs hate you from the beginning. What about cultural exchanges? Embargos? Sanctions?

Get rid of the whole "I won't buy land next to your land" thing in diplomacy. When you are called out by another civ, all you have to say is "sorry, my bad". It is a waste of time. Telling them not to settle near you, makes them hate you even more.

3) Bring back religion and espionage. Leave out corporations: Religion should be a major factor in the game. Religion has shaped many nations over time. Happiness should be affected by your choices. Also it added another layer to diplomacy. It gives common ground that doesn't exist in Civ 5. Corp. were really worthless and took too much time to spread. Religion was done well in Civ 4. I agree with another poster who said you should subdivide religions (ie. Christianity - Catholosism and Prostantism). Anyone should be able to found a religion from the start and you build it like a wonder.

4) The stack of doom should stay dead. Nuff said.

5) Bring back Leonard Nimoy!

6) Bring back the clock and alarm.

7) Let me listen to my own music again.
