Some f***** up things i civ III!

I actually think it is pretty funny when a tank gets killed by a bunch of guys with pointy sticks.

You know, this actually did happen in real life during WWII when the Italians attempted to invade Ethiopia and were repelled. However, I agree that it is kind of annoying.

Yeah, but where would the fun be in being the first to build tanks and obliterate your opposition without any losses. Might as well go in the editor and give your civ's unique unit an attack of 100 and defense of 100. :tank:

The one thing I get frustrated about with shift-U is that if you have a lot of garrison units dug in, you have to re-fortify them the next turn individually. It'd be nice if they kept their "fortified" status, but it's not enough to make me hate the whole game or stop playing or anything.

The Ethiopians had obsolete weapons including old rifles and artillery, and some machine guns. They did not use spears. The spears you saw were likely from old newsreels of ceremonies, not their actual weapons.

Upset that spearmen killed a tank? Then use a little creativity...

Possible scenarios:

1. Spearmen ambushed tank unit personnel at night and caught them offguards and with the hatch open
2. Spearmen prepared for tanks by digging ditches and covering them up creating traps for tanks to fall into and be overtaken
3. Spearmen get really creative and manage to sneak up and jam obstructions into the tank's barrel, tank go boom when it tries to fire
4. Spearmen rush tank with large logs/metal bars, jam into treads, tank disabled

It happens rarely enough that it's kind of fun to think up possible scenarios when it does happen. :) Remember when we were 5 and we could turn a cardboard box and a couple of wooden blocks into an afternoon of fun? Go back to that happy place when you're playing the game, it'll lead to less stress and more fun. :D

Lets make it clear! -I LOVE Civilization i all ways, but that do not mean I somtimes can be annoyed by some things in the game.

So actually I agreed pretty much with all of you guys! :goodjob:

"but that do not mean I somtimes can be annoyed by some things in the game."

=

with that I mean that I CAN be annoyed some times - but that rarely happens! :king:

Well, if you allow scenarios like that, anything can happen.

Scenario 1.
Spearman throws a spear into the sky hitting a bird which spins out of control and into the barrel of the tank causing it to clog at the moment they fire thereby exploding the tank.

Scenario 2.
Spearman gets a hold of a CD player and blasts Ricky Martin thereby causing the tank driver to go insane and kill himself.

But honestly, you just have to assume that they fight, not they do some weird ninja crap. If straight up fights weren't the case, then even a worker could defeat a tank given the right circumstances.

Anyone play Master Of Orion 2? That had it right, if you were the ultra elite super tech gods, then you could build machines to crush your opponent. Simply put, a Doomstar class ship with Death Rays would never be beat by a Scout class ship with a Laser Cannon. Too think the scout should have a chance means you've been watching too much Star Wars, not every unit has some special weakness that can be exploited.

Oh well, I'm just disgruntled because I lose a buttload of battles that I should rightly win thereby eliminating the option for me to play a military game.

It is quite possible to play a militaristic game. It just takes patience, artillery, and more artillery.

I'm sure it's quite possible for you to play a military game, but artillery can't kill units. So they still have that last HP with which they can defeat me. Roughly 50% of the time 1 HP is all the computer needs to defeat me.

Unless you are attacking with inferior or untrained units, you should not be losing that often. Chances are, a veteran cavalry will manage to inflict at least one point of damage on even an infantry unit. Sometimes the first one fails, but the second one succeeds. You just have to learn to accept some losses. Losing a few battles doesn't really matter if you win the war.

Well....I hadn't considered the bird-in-my-tank-barrel tactic, or Ricky Martin psychological warfare that spearmen might be using to their tremendous benefit. And yes, despairing over tank-killing spearmen (and other military improbabilities) is a moot point since its just part of the game....I was just venting. Its just hard to watch your conquest plan come to naught over such things, especially at 2am  . I second DarkwingGT comment that these civ-isms do seem to disuade (at least me) from taking the military victory route.

I'm all better now, and have the paperwork that says so.
