My laptop started doing something very odd recently. Every time I turn on my laptop, Windows Solution Center starts and tries to install something(it doesn't say what). Once it reaches 95%, and error box pops up saying it can;t find the required file, then reverses the install(it progresses from 95% back to 0, exactly opposite from the installation) then closes. I can cancel the installation/deinstallation process at any time as well...

I'm not quite sure what is happening. Did a windows patch get screwed up somehow, causing this reoccuring error? Did I get a very poorly programmed virus? Something else entirely?

Make a not of what it is trying to install. Then you could try starting the laptop in safe mode and go into the control panel and find it.

I don't know what it's trying to install. All I get is this after the installation fails:

And you've run all the spyware and virus checks? Have you tried opening the task manager and trying to figure out what the program is that way?

Yep, ran the antivirus several times.... I have not tried to find the program from the task manager on reboot, I'll see if that does anything next time...

Okay, the task is called SolutionCenter. The Process is hpqste08.exe *32, described as HP CUE Status Root. I should have known it was HP, they're always messing stuff up... only HP think I have on my computer is my printer, so I guess it's coming from there.

Time to do some googling I guess. If you guys know anything about this, let me know.

It's something to do with an HP printer, although I'm not sure the exact function, it installs itself with my printer/scanner/copier combo (EVEN THOUGH I TOLD THE INSTALLER NOT TO, GRRR)

Yeah, it was coming from the printer. What a PoS. I fixed it by going into the boot menu and disabling everything with "HP" on it. Never buying anything from them again... they break my computer even when it's not an HP itself.

You can go into the Windows Explorer and simply delete that program. For most HP printers Windows will install the needed drivers on its own. All the rest of HP programs are more trouble than they are worth.

Well, I do use their scanner program, only because I'm lazy and can't be bothered to find a free one.

Also, a lot of their stuff shows up in Revo Uninstaller, but not Windows Add/Remove. Hmmm.

I just plug mine in, and works with no other work. At all. On a fresh install.
