Some unit promotions are too situational

"Commando - can scale cliff walls"

"Suppression - Exercise zone of control."

"Charge - +10 attack vs. fortified defender."

possibly the 3 worst promotions in the game, especially that Commando crap which you're rarely going to use in a Continents or Pangaea map. promotions need to be more applicable to most battles

i miss developing veteran units with powerful promotions, Civ 6 cut down on this severely with two paths to choose from with only 3 promotions each and some of these promotions are just terrible

i wish Charge was changed from 'fortified defender' to 'wounded', that would be way more useful, most of the fortified units i encounter are barbarian camps

Commando needs to be scrapped entirely and merged with Amphibious promotion, making that promotion less lackluster and freeing up space for something useful to melee units

Suppression should be changed to something like "heals every turn". zone of control for ranged units is just too meh of a promotion, especially since ranged units are typically prioritized by the enemy anyway since they are more squishy

Agreed, there are some very useless promotions. I'd prefer if the first two promotions simply gave the unit a small increase in combat strength and then 3rd and 4th promotions were actual added abilities, like an extra attack or move & shoot or bonus against wounded units.

I think the promotions are specifically intended to represent special training and tactics which is indeed quite situational. I have found uses for each of the promotions mentioned. Its just a matter of utilizing the abilities to their greatest effect.

zone of control on ranged unit is often good to put a city under siege while simplifying your melee unit pathfinding, speed things up quite a bit.

Agreed. Suppression is good.

I don't find Commando to be great, but boy do I miss it when I don't have it.

Charge isn't bad because it affects attacking cities with a unit in them. Can make your knights strong enough to take down cities without any ranged fire.

I wish commando added an ability to scale mountains with two movement, maybe taking damage at the start of next rurn.

commando is pretty "meh", but you have to consider the skill tree as a whole. you have the choice between battlecry+commando vs. tortoise+amphibious.

Supression's main advantage is that you can use it to put cities under siege.

Situational -- sure. It can be between taking a city and not taking a city -- that makes it a difference maker.

It's almost like they want your units to be specialized so that you don't have a super commando who can do everything, thus allowing you to have Unit A as your siege unit while Unit B is your marine unit or something.

As a completely unbiased observer, I agree 100% with OP and the quote above. Vanilla promotions are bland, badly balanced and the descriptions are sometimes plain wrong. Here are some of the new promotion trees I, erm, the creator of that mod did. They give a real balanced choice between different types of specialisation for units.

Indeed the “can climb cliff” promotion is a waste of experience point even on water heavy map. However i would argue zoc on range units is the 2nd best promotion, only after “shoot twice in around”. This makes taking down cities early so much easier and makes the warmonger in me very happy :)

Of course. The point was that you don't need marine units, basicly ever.

Or you can go tortoise and battlecry. Though the right side is clearly optimized for taking cities. I'm not really sure what the left side is for.

For archers, the right side is optimized for city taking, but suppression can be useful there (hence the crossover). The left side is anti-personnel, so I find to be most useful against barbarians.

The rest are a bit muddled.

Sorry, but I'd rather hear it from the horse's mouth than trust a random gamer's opinion on any mod they happen to fancy that week.

I actually find Civ VI promotions to be pretty boring. I'm rarely too excited to get them. I liked Civ IV promotions much better.
