Something to avoid in Civ 3!!!!

Of course... I didn't even know Civ3 was in the works until I stumbled upon this forum by complete accident! So I haven't been waiting as long as you guys from that perspective.

Good for you. I've always been in the anticipation that the release would be somewhere in June or maybe even further.

Huh? Without an aggressive marketing ploy, Firaxis will bury itself. Business isn't just about selling to your old customers, its about attracting new ones all the time. And the best time to attract new customers is Christmas (when we all get a little loose with our wallets).

I estimate that out of the four million civ 2 units sold, less than 1 million will come back for a second try. Firaxis will have to aggressively market civ 3 to the upcoming generation and to people who have never tried it. Out of all the people I know, perhaps five percent of them have heard of civ, even less have played it. In fact, most of the people I know who have tried it think its the stupidest game they've ever played. Those people obviously are not going to buy another civ. Firaxis will have to market to a new generation.

I'm sorry you have to associate with such sightless acquaintances blue.

Thats wacky! Of all the people I've met who have played either civ I haven't met anyone who didn't fall in love with it.

I do agree though that its simply good business to do marketing during the christmas season. Its great for that initial sales burst... plus all the people that get it for christmas are going to tell their friends about it if its so great.

Ouch! I don't think you want them hearing that.

I think that the comments in here are a result of skewed demographics. Look at what type of people are generally in here. Most of the people I have observed and know about in this forum are either high school students or computer programmers. There are some notable exceptions in here (myself included). I'm not the stereotypical civ player, and the people I spend time with are not civ types either. Some of them are very talented computer peolple, but do not care for civ. As a result of the people around me, I know that outside this little arena civ is not a very popular game.

Like I said, many people I know have never heard of civ or they think its stupid. Firaxis should try and market the game to a wider audience. Even if they don't like it, Firaxis will still make plenty of money selling it to people who will just shelve it.

even if civIII is "shelved" by many out of boredom, firaxis has made a buck ... and that is the impetus behind of any company: accumulation of capital, of power ...

but if they tailor the game for a "larger audience," adding a goofy science fiction spin, for instance, or debalancing the game, in favor of a war twist, they will risk alienating the core players and (more importantly) the thousands who shelved the game after too much play, or out of addiction.

As a check to Dealon and his obvious militray bias, i implore firaxis to realize that concentrating on one aspect of the game will destabalize the game. The military aspect of the game is important, but its development should go hand in hand with city management, trade, and science development ... the french and the english fought for years simply because their militaries were not strong enough or advanced to eliminate the other's army or submit their cities ... in short,if you make the miliataries too powerful, you will destabalize the game ...

[Edit Note: I removed the quoted message; Dealon's letter to Firaxis is a 'bit' too long to quote. The letter is on page 1 of this thread.]

I know what you mean, I only have you here on the posts and ladder, a select few friends and my wife that actually like the game or have even heard of it, I think you have to have a deep history background to really appreciate CIV for what it really stands for, and most people don't, Like I was talking to a friend the other day that couldn't remember if the first US president was Geroge Washington or Abraham Lincoln, I mean come on That's not even in the simple historic category, it's more just common knowledge.

Johan511, I'm no historical expert but I do believe I have a deep appreciation for Civ and what it stands for.

I'm Canadian, and I don't know the answer to which president was first, nor do I consider it common knowledge... but if I were to guess I would say Washington was first (because he fought in the independance war... where as Lincoln was around during the Civil war... obviously he couldn't be first).

General knowledge really depends where you come from. Our Chinese friends may think us ignorant of history because we can not name the third major dynasty...

HAHAHAHA you guys are great for laughs. not that your funny/stupid it just the way ya say it.

Anyway...9 months..hmm going to ask my mom how long that wait is..

I got something to keep me busy in the mean time.

Bank on topic

I EMPLORE YOU NOT TO CHANGE THE CITY INTERPHASE!!!! I am going to cry if it is something like CTP or smac...And i hate those damn building ques...

Geez enough senseless banter can we please get back on topic, I don't have many posts nor too long on this site but please agree with me when i say "don't let a newbe's insult throw this perfectly good topic out the window,(along with one of my favorite topic starters).

Blue to tell you the truth you should have just let that remark go, you words have enough meaning to sand on there own. Anybody with half a brain can see that!

i said previously that I wanted to see a beta test version come out..any idea when and if that might happen?

Dreadnought, you're right. I should have acted in a more appropriate manner. I have shamed myself with such a rampant outburst. Perhaps I was to hasty in my reply, but I stand firmly by what I said. Had I waited a day, my reaction would have been a little less severe, but none the less insulting. He deserved the verbal assassination that I gave him. I will, however, apologize to Thuderfall since he had to clean up my little mess.

Also you are right, let's return to the discussion:

I would think that in order to have a decent version for Beta test and to have a decent window to make fixes to the game they would start testing in early July. That way, they would have two months to test the product and another month to fix the product and would be able to start production a month before the release. Since this game will probably sell quite well in the first few months (especially with the christmas season) They will need substantial time to manufacture the product and have time to make a adequate stockpile.

Yeah well I really cant wait as much as i'd like to think. I really want some improvements in CIV II and want to see them in Civ III, the beta tes version (if it coems out in July)will ease my mind.

But tell me how will they distribut it? will anyone who wants it get it or just specific people (like i think).

Either way just hearing other people talk about seeing it and playing it would give us all more to talk about.

I don't know, really. The computer gaming industry really isn't my forte. I would assume that they would make a limited production (maybe a couple hundred units) and distribute it first to their own playtesters and then to volunteer playtesters.

As far as who will be selected from the volunteers? Maybe we should ask Firaxis. Are you listening Dan Magaha FIRAXIS?

Well then lets do that...he's already replied to this thread.

Dan, what about beta test versions when and who will they be given to?
